(S05E24) I liked this episode a lot, so the following criticism is an admitted nitpick:To my knowledge, this is the first time we've seen a "casual Friday" on the show. We've had several episodes take place on Fridays, and the cast always dressed normally.
I can't stand when shows do this. To revolve a plot around something that we haven't seen previously and probably won't ever see again ... it just feels so sitcommy.
Don't get me wrong, it was funny (especially when Meredith's boob, butt, and "other" fell out), but I expect more from The Office than common sitcom tropes. What's next? A laugh track? Replacing John Krasinksi with Dick Sargent? Finding out that Michael Scott is really Armin Tamzarian? Blech.
Sorry, I needed to get that off my chest. Now, on to the rest of the review...
The meat of the episode, involving Michael's dilemma in deciding which salesmen should get which clients, was very good. I was as surprised as Michael when Phyllis revealed how hurt she was that the Michael Scott Paper Company so directly targeted their clients. It made sense: Michael thought he was getting even with corporate, but in actuality he was undercutting the salespeople he so often claimed were family.
(Though, I'll be honest, Phyllis has proven herself such a master manipulator, it makes me wonder if she was actually hurt, or just using Michael's sense of extended family against him. It really says a lot about how vividly every corner of this show is painted that even a minor character, clad in an awful Costco sweater, can have such debatable motivations.)
In the end, the reset button was pushed just a wee bit too hard (Ryan is going back to being a temp?), but the last seven weeks were so enjoyable I'm not going to complain. I've already made one annoying nitpick about the show -- let's leave it at that.
Other Stuff:
-- It's entirely possible that I'm completely wrong and that casual Friday has been mentioned several times and that I've missed it. The part of my brain that remembers stuff has been destroyed by watching 900 hours of swine flu coverage. Also, if you try to google "The Office and Casual Friday," you either get mentions of this particular episode or actual descriptions of actual offices that actually have casual Fridays. Either way, I'm sure you fine people will correct me ... angrily.
-- One of the better Creed episodes. Apparently, casual Friday for him means dressing like God from Bruce Almighty. Also, he's a chess whiz who thinks that Jim is gay. I suppose, in theory, there's a point where there'd be too much Creed on the show, but I can't imagine we'll reach that point in our lifetime.
-- We're awful close to the end of the season, and it feels like the season's major arc has been completed. Any theories on what the finale is going to cover?
-- This is the second week in a row that Jim's steady hand helped decide the outcome of the plot. He does well in that role, but I can't help but get the feeling that when things are great in Jamland, the writers don't quite know what to do with Jim. Is Jim happy to still be in Scranton? Does he have goals beyond where he's at now? I hope that we'll be able to see some growth from Jim that isn't related to faux-drama between Pam and him.
-- You look like J-Lo.
As always, your comments are the open-toed sandals that cool my feet.

Well I do believe in this episode Micheal said he brought back casual Fridays.
Maybe it's just been gone for a long while.
I loved this episode. The Creed/Jim conversations were great.

Good point, but it still feels like one of those things that appear for the sake of this particular episode and then disappears into the sitcom ether. Like Brigadoon (or Donnie Most).
Maybe if we see it again, it won't be so bad...

I'll also add that at my office there are no casual days, but once in a blue moon it has been ok'd as a one-off event.

Yes, it was clearly stated that casual Friday was just reinstated by Michael and Toby clearly nixed it before the episode ended. That's why we never saw it before and we won't see it again.

I was really really hoping that everytime we saw the carpet, there would be a huge stain or sloppy carpet patch job from Kevin's chili. Didn't happen.

I was hoping for this too and it would all be blamed on an unseen Todd Packer.

I laughed so hard on that open, but then it was completely gone. I was hoping they'd at least show people eating the chili and having Toby find something from the floor in his spoon or something.
Otherwise, another great episode in the show's best season since #2.

I think on an episode in season 2 Pam says something about Michael having created "casual fridays" just in order for him to wear his jeans...yep
I just checked, it's on "the client", and there is actually several footage of the office folks wearing casual clothing...

Thanks for the research, David! 2 points and the promise of a ham sandwich (totally paid for by AOL money) should we ever meet in person.
I still don't think the continuity works out, but I'm feeling better about it.

The thing I don't get is Ryan was hired back as part of the company - It was implied that he would be a salesman. And now he was demoted - In the real world - he probably has a huge suit on his hand for breech of contract.

This may be too sitcommy but they should do a episode that retells previous events from Creed's point of view. it may be a PITA for the writers to keep it all straight but possiblities are freaking awesome.
Also with those sandals, be wary of the foot fungus.

I'd like to see _any_ episode retold from Creed's point of view. I mean, seriously, if you were the directors of this supposed documentary, wouldn't you abandon the paper company angle on, like, Day 3, to concentrate on Creed?

i think the finale is going to have Holly coming back.
Pam and Phyllis bought their outfits from Boscov's, not Costo, i believe.
good review. shout out to Armin Tamzarian!

Sarah, you are right, Phyllis and Pam were wearing matching outfits from Boscov's in the Steamtown Mall (not Costco). I should know, I live and work less than 20 miles from Scranton and have shopped at many area Boscov's stores (there isn't a Costo anywhere around here).

I found it odd that they had to get rid of Ryan or demote him. They're supposed to be SALES people, not client managers. Who cares if they have zero clients? They should be generating new ones in the sales position. At least that's how its worked in my experiences. CALL, CALL, CALL! Ugh!

Ah hoch I'm feeling you there. I too wondered why Michael didn't at least give Pam and Ryan the opportunity to go out and find new clients in order to keep their positions. I mean wouldn't that actually be the perfect solution to the problem? Bring in more business, while keeping your staff in tact? At least let them try then if they couldn't succeed make the choice then. What happened to all the clients from Karen and Andy's branch? All the sales people who moved to Scranton quit except for Andy. So wouldn't there be a bunch of clients either available or available to be wooed back to DM? But I guess perhaps it was necessary because BJ Novak might want to focus on writing more, so that was the choice made, to keep Ryan, while giving BJ time to do his thing in writing and movies.
