If you were speculating about whether Timothy Olyphant's character of Wes Krulik was coming back for season three of Damages, it's looking like he's not. The edgy star's been tapped to play the lead in an FX drama pilot based on Elmore Leonard's short story "Fire in the Hole" (looking forward to the pairing of Leonard and Olyphant). The show revolves around U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Olyphant), who returns to his hometown of Kentucky.
Creator and executive producer Graham Yost describes the character this way: "He has a certain jaggedness, but he also loves his job. He is like an anachronism: He wears a hat, cowboy boots and a holster on his hip. It's a little bit like he was born 100 years too late."
Yost was was associated with John Adams and Band of Brothers, so that bodes well (let's just forget that he was a writer and executive producer on Raines). And the pilot will be directed by Michael Dinner, who directed and produced many episodes of The Wonder Years, so he automatically gets a thumbs up from me. Production is scheduled to start at the end of May.
Now, back to Damages. Season two ended with Ellen Parsons at the grave of her dead husband, telling him she had a job offer and a boyfriend. Apparently, Wes isn't that boyfriend. Thoughts on that?

This NY Times article (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/04/arts/television/04dave.html?scp=7&sq=damages&st=Search) from the beginning of season two talks about how the Damages writers make a lot of last-minute writing and story decisions. So Ellen may well be referring to Wes, and explaining his absence may become part of season three's flashbacks.
Oh, and Graham Yost was involved with Boomtown, a show I really liked and another casualty of NBC's erratic treatment of shows over the past several years. This project sounds promising.
