(S05E20) "Someone will be singing 'Wind Beneath My Freaking Wings'" - Meredith
Why does ABC have to mention that Grey's Anatomy has some of the best storylines on television? If that is true, that must mean that Private Practice has the worst. The episode was good, but the long wait got me jaded.
The show does better when Meredith isn't the center of the show. Even with her as the narrator, she succeeded only as a model for Izzie and a mediator between Derek and Mark. Speaking of which, Lexie was hysterical the whole episode. I thought it was so obscene that she kept eating something different in every shot that she was in. Sure they mentioned that she broke out, but couldn't the makeup team add a lump or two? I didn't see one thing wrong with her face.
So, they've finally planted the seeds for the big George story-arc. I thought the psychotic patient was unrealistic. The fact that he could just get up and jump out of a window without someone stopping him is just a horrible sign for the quality level of Seattle Grace. If we had to go with psychotic and unrealistic, have him land on George. I've been to hospitals, and I thought that most windows were bulletproof. I appreciate that George tried to take the guy's pulse.
At the moment, I can't stand Izzie's storyline. I appreciated Christina's concern for Izzie, but Izzie is turning into the boy who cried wolf. Manipulating people into getting her way is wrong. If her friends are true friends, she won't have to fake death to get their attention. Creating a façade of strength and positivity is one thing, but the next moment faking a turn for the worst is cold and careless. I couldn't believe that someone would play the Cancer card.
Going back to the makeup department, why can't Izzie go around with a skullcap covering her hair to just pretend that she's gotten treatment? Everyone else in the cancer ward had no hair. Izzie would be getting glares from me if I was there. I truly think the show's art department has gotten lazy.
Then we get to Callie. Hearing her complain in Spanish is amazing. Watching her father turn Mark and George into tomatoes was classic. I loved Callie's father's gumption, but he needed to take a step back; she's not 12. I doubt that going to Miami to be with her family will fix her lesbianism. I wouldn't be worried about a trust fund if I had a steady job as a doctor, shared my apartment, and my college bills were all paid off. The people in Seattle Grace have become her real family, and if she saved her money correctly, she should be fine right now.
Arizona was a great support for Callie, but yet she quit on her own patient. Arizona was so chipper and positive about every situation that seeing her give up felt out of character. I appreciate Bailey showing her maternal instincts; the pet peeve is that she's not spending time with her own family and making memories. There's something wrong about Bailey cradling the child; doesn't it break some sort of doctor/patient agreement? What made it worse was that Jessica's father had a blind eye towards the whole situation. If I walked into the room, I would be upset that someone is holding my daughter.
I don't even care about how unrealistic this show is becoming; I'm just excited that I don't have to wait another three weeks for a new episode.

You don't lose all your hair the second you get your first chemo treatment. I'm sure Izzy will lose her hair, but this ep was about the chemo taking effect for the first time.
I thought Lexie was pregnant (because Chyler Leigh got knocked up)... at least that has not happened... yet.
How is it that we've never heard Callie do a "spanish rant" before? It's a staple action of all angry hispanics on television. She's been pissed off many times before, at George, at Izzy... many times. Why was this her first ranto de espanol? She did it twice this episode, but never before? Come on.

Callie's rant was in Spanish because she was ranting at her Dad, most likly Spanish was the primary language at home, and she reverted. At work and in her life now English is primary.
I agree, the chemo effects are not immediate, they build up. Also, there are MANY different types of chemo, and some you do not lose your hair.

Yum, take me down to Calli-zona!!! My wife makes me watch this miserable show, but as long as Callie is on the screen, my eyes are wide open.

The Lexie-always-eating thing reminded me of Brad Pitt in "Oceans Eleven." It was a nice wink at Chyler Leigh being pregnant.
The Bailey scene near the end was powerful; the music worked really well. This is the only show on TV that makes me cry. It's true.

OK...
-I was pissed off that they did the typical stereotype-Hispanic woman must yell in Spanish. It’s lame, tired, and slightly off-putting. Lets get Italians in there to yell with their hands next!~
-I know we are supposed to suspend belief but this is getting too stupid. First the prom, then waiting for Mer's test results, drinking at Dereks "home", fighting in the hospital, now trying on wedding dresses. When do they actually work?
-There were so many tired clichés it was stupid.
sick/dieing child with crazy parent/s-check
Bailey either angry or supporting someone 0THER than her family-check
random crazy person-check
cornball factor-check.
Oooh and throw in the sure to happen “cancer” storyline and we have it. Cant wait for the epi when she loses her hair-finds strength-and inspires a therapy group. Come on bring back the great writing. I watch it in hopes it will be back.

Do you have a working remote control at your house? If you hate the show so much that everything about it seems trite and cliche (by the way, most of us thought Callie swearing and ranting in Spanish was hilarious and realistic, not cliche), I suggest taking your index finger, and clicking either the "channel up" or "channel down" arrow until you find something that doesn't give you such a nosebleed. Problem solved. That was easy! :)

Dearest Scott...
First take a big breath and relax. In your anger you missed the sentence where I said I watch it in hopes of catching the good show it was. Considering the ad always mention their amazing writing...I always think this is going to be the change.
I found it offensive that she was the typical stereo type angry-hispanic-ranting-in-spanish character. I am half Spanish/Italian and I find it too sterotypical. I am glad you could see past that. You are such the better man.
If I saw a stranger (he just met her that day) holding my child in her lap regardless who it was I would be a little unsettled as well.
Isnt it grand that we have a blog where we can post opinions that can just as easily be skipped over as it is to change a channel? Ooooh I love America!~ Or should I say "oooh I'ah love'ah dese spicy meat-a-balls. With my hands. Since I am Italian/Spanish.
We should both get real lives.
Nosebleed reference is to what?

Izzie still has hair because she just started treatment. It doesn't fall out the first day. LOL The makeup department is doing a great job, by making her GRADUALLY become pale, thin and drawn looking. If one treatment in she looked like a dying cancer patient, that would not be believable. Who wrote this review??? And no, a doctor holding a child as a nurturing/comforting measure does not break any "code". It's healthy, and healing. Lexie is clearly pregnant; hence the eating. And Bailey's performance this week was heartbreaking. Grey's is getting good again. Get with the program, TV Squad.

I don't know who the actress was who played the dying little girl, but she had me crying. She amazed me by the depth of her acting. She is definitely one to watch in the future.
