This is absurd. She expressed her opinion and it is a valid opinion. She acknowledged that not everyone agreed and she is being vilified for her stance.
Perez Hilton is an ass and I have much greater respect that she respected her own values knowing that it wasn't playing to her audience.
Shame on those that criticize her.

What if she said something like all the Jews control the money supply, or all black people are criminals? Yes everyone is entitled to their opinion, however that doesn't mean that every opinion is valid.

@ michael,
Comparing gay marriage to black or jewish people is more p.i. than what she said. Homosexual citizens have a choice on weather or not to be gay. Black or Jewish people do not. What she said is an opinion based on her on beliefs just as perez's response was based on his own beliefs. That was a loaded question because she had no where to go. If she says she believes in gay marriage, then it alienates a lot of christians and conservatives in the country. If she gives a p.c. answer, it compromises her own beliefs and ruins the point of the question and what makes america great, expressing your opinions. IMO, what perez said and the judges response was far more offensive than what she said.

i think perez is right. as pompous as he can be he has a point. miss usa is supposed to represent the usa and we shouldnt be represented by a bigoted religious zealot. this is a country founded on human right and non religious interference in government. im glad that this is bringing even more attention to this debate

Too bad only 33% of the USA believe that.
Hell even Obama said that Marriage should be between a man and a woman.
Duh

That is not even valid. First, she was asked HER oppinion and second, she represents CA, a state that recently voted (by the majority) to outlaw gay marriage. So, IF she is suppose to represent her state then she did just that.
Personally, I do not want anyone, even Miss America to cave in to thier personal convictions even if it steps on a few toes.

I certainly don't agree with her but everyone is entitled to their opinion, and she expressed that opinion. I don't see what the huge problem is here. What did you want her to do? Lie about her true feelings towards the matter?

maybe consider basic human rights.

Yeah, but you can't make someone agree with you. I believe that any human should have the right to marry any other human they want, but I also believe that anybody should be allowed to express their opinion, even if it is bigoted.

@patricia:
To be precise, Obama (in the clip) said that he believes marriage "is between one man and one woman," not that marriage "should be between one man and one woman," as most phrase it. It may be a nit-picky semantic argument, but it does come short of arguing what the state of things should be.

She's entitled to her opinion and articulated it well within the confines of the event.
Frankly, asking the question in that venue is the mistake here. If you ask a politically charged question, you should expect a response in kind. Many Americans, such as myself, believe that Gay Marriage should not be legal. She is one of them, so how does she not represent the country?
Leave the punditry to the 24 hour news channels, not Miss USA.

I suppose that suffrage rights of blacks and Women should not be legal either. Why don't you crawl back into that hole through which you came from.

Luckily bigoted religious zealots are quickly becoming a meaningless minority in this country. Gay marriage will become a reality in this country just like women's suffrage and civil rights became a reality. Get used to it.

I wouldn't ask Obama his opinion on directing sales tax revenue to pay for a State bond on a new minor league baseball stadium. I wouldn't ask Councilman Samuels if we should invade Somalia to root out the pirates. I wouldn't ask Miss California about gay marriage.
Her response wasn't nearly as bad as asking Miss America contestants questions about hot button political issues in the first place. Her job is to act pretty while representing all of us, not stirring up insignificant controversy.

I actually would have given her low marks not just for her response to the question but for her complete lack of poise in answering.
"well in my country. my family. marriage is..."
seriously.
forget about the message (religious homophobic zealot or not), she just cant speak (as opposed to Obama, who is a fantastic speaker)
The point of the questions isn't really to hear their opinions, but to see how they react under pressure. she didn't hold up at all.
Regardless, why shouldn't have Perez asked that question? Every year for the past 20 years they've gotten more and more political. Again, don't judge to content of her answer but her delivery.
I admire her for saying what she believes, but still think she's an idiot for her beliefs. I wouldn't want her representing me.
The diff b/w her and Obama is that we all know Obama is fine with gay marriage. He was taking the PC middle of the road ground just to make conservatives feel more comfortable.

So you are saying that Carrie is willing to give up her crown to say what she believes but that you prefer Obama because, although he said the same thing, we "all know" that he was not telling the truth about his beliefs? Are you calling Obama a liar? I believe he was telling the truth when he said that he was opposed to homosexual marriage and I agree with him on that issue.
