(S14E08) Yes! Sing along with the karaoke cab in Thailand. As we saw in this episode of The Amazing Race, we'll be accompanied by singing transvestites. But that would make it all the more unique an experience. Oh-oye, tonight's show seemed to start off a bit slow for me. However, things surely twisted and turned as it went along.
Tonight's lessons
- Don't leave your backpacks or, in particular, your fanny-packs with your travel documents behind.
- Don't use your personal items to pay cabbies.
- Tighten your propeller properly.
Brothers Mark and Michael should have studied the rulebook for the race. In the last episode, they incurred two 30-minute time penalties for messing with equipment and paying a taxi to lead them in the rickshaw detour. Perhaps if they hadn't paid the driver to do that, they might have had money enough to get through this leg's tasks without resorting to using personal items to pay for cab rides. They did it twice, so we're talking two two-hour penalties.
But, just as bad but without time penalties was the fact that Jen and Kisha left behind all of their possessions at the Roadblock! The younger sister, Jen, kept harping about going back to get them, but big sis Kisha was having none of that. She should have listened to the wisdom of youth. They had to go back to get them before Phil would check them in. Mark and Michael also left their bags behind, getting them before hitting the Pit Stop. That didn't help them with the penalties, though.
Oh. The propeller. Well, that was Victor. Although he possibly did the worst job of any of the racers assembling a propeller and mounting it on a boat, his sister Tammy cheered him on throughout. Perhaps Victor could pick up some tips on sibling support from his little sister, eh? In the end, he didn't have it tight enough. It made an awful noise and went kerflooey, thus sending them ashore to fix it. But at least they thought to bring their bags with them.
I have questions
- Don't the teams have to pay the taxis to wait in situations such as the Roadblock? I'm not quite understanding why the teams didn't automatically go back to get their bags and pay the cabbies when they were ready to take off on the boats.
- What was with the dentures on the "Street of Happy Smiles" in the Broken Teeth Detour? It really raised the EWW Factor for me. Thankfully, Margie and Luke wore gloves. But it seemed like a germ party in action. Blech!
- How could Mark and Michael think the "girls" in the karaoke party cab were so hot? I don't like Cara and Jaime much these days, but they seemed spot on when they said they were transvestites. Of course, the Cara/Jaime reaction to them was just as weird in its own way.
- Why must Cara and Jaime be so rude? I think it's only one of them, but they're getting on my nerves.
The Pit Stop order
1. Margie and Luke -- they won a trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico
2. Jaime and Cara
3. Kisha and Jen -- Had to go back for their bags before they could be checked in.
3. Tammy and Victor
4. Mark and Michael -- Had to sit through two two-hour penalties.
4. Kisha and Jen
5. Mark and Michael
This was a non-Philimination leg, so Mark and Michael are still in the race. However, they were called to the welcome mat with nearly an hour used on their penalty time. In the next leg, they'll have to do that time and a speed bump, too.

If they're not allowed to trade personal items (which the cab drivers didn't seem to mind too much) what is a team supposed to do if they run out of money?

It wasn't nearly an hour left on their penalty; it was nearly an hour USED. They still had over three hours left on the penalty.

I agree, even Phil pointed out that M&M will have to wait 3 hours and ten minutes before they leave the pit stop, then do a speed bump on top of that!
Keisha and Jen had no money to get back to their passports, or even to the pit stop, but, glory be, what manners and a winning smile will do for you in a pinch! They not only got to the pit stop w/o $$, but got back to their passports and check in on manners and courtesy alone....go girls!
I sooooooo want to slap Jamie and Cara, I know it's only one of them being so rude ALL the time, but they are a team....calm the rude biotch down already!
Margie and Luke...run them all over, every chance you get. I've noticed they either come in 4th or 1st...I hope they keep up 1st to the end. I've also noticed Margie is carrying Luke thru this...all I can say is she carried him for 9 months, don't stop now.

Actually it was Kisha and Jen that commented on the "thai-trannys", (tammy t00) not Jamie and Cara. I thought it was a great episode, I laughed through the whole thing!~

If they run out of money they are supposed to ask for money, or ask for a free ride, NOT trade items because they need those items for future legs of the race and they arent for bartering. PLUS telling a cabbie that something is "very expensive and worth alot" when it clearly isnt is just wrong.

What's really the difference in begging for something instead of just giving up a watch? Ideologically?

Plus part of the race is that you get a certain dollar amount for each leg, you are meant to manage your money wisely along each leg.

What I don't understand is the starting times of this leg..last time mark and michael were first, but received an 1 hour penalty...so that Tammy and Victor became the first team...so this episode they started first at 9.27 pm and mark and michael started 3rd at 12.46 pm...how can the difference be more than an hour...i just don't understand :S

I was wondering the same thing.....most of the teams were within an hour at the end of the last leg but tonight the difference between Tammy and Victor and the second place teams was three hours. I didn't understand what happened.

The starts have been odd the last couple weeks. Two weeks ago the teams all poured in during daylight, yet they were released at 11 am at the start of last week's show... more like a 24 hour hold than the standard 12, but I dunno.
My patience and understanding for Luke are wearing very thin. I don't mind that his personal reactions are over the top, I understand that that's a result of him over-emoting due to no tonal control. However, he's just a cry-baby. Being trapped in a world with no sound causes certain things. Deaf people often sound alike. Deaf people often over-emote. Deaf people do a lot of things, but one thing deaf people don't do as a whole is behave like a spoiled cry-baby who needs his mommy to do everything for him. I'm tired of him, I'm tired of hearing and reading absolutions for him because he can't hear. Excusing his emotional retardation as just being part of his deafness is a slight to the deaf. He's just a douche.
And what happened the the midgets egos? For the first 5 or 6 episodes they were the kings of the universe (no offense to the Apprentice folks) and we certainly had to hear about how they were going to dominate in virtually every way. Stupidity has a way of throwing a wrench in things, I guess, eh?

They could still have a chance in the next leg, it all depends where they are flying going next, and how long everyone has to wait at the airport for the flight to leave.

I think everyone is forgetting there is another blind U-turn left in the race. It is definitely going to show up at the next leg. They'll be on the same flight to another country, so Mark and Mike will not be too behind I believe. The killer would be a blind U-turn. Unless the blind U-turn is being used to cut down to the final 3.

My sister asked me if deaf people were mentally challenged because Luke surely had a problem. Next week's show looks like another chance for him to cry again.

I wish I was able to comment on this week's show.
But of course, 60 minutes ran FORTY EFFING MINUTES OVER, so my DVR only recorded the first 20 minutes, which made it an automatic deletion.
I understand the possibility of the NFL making everything run over, whatever.......but this is absolutely bullshit.
"Just DVR the show after..." - yeah, I usually do that during the NFL season.....didn't realize that the Masters would do the same thing....
"just DVR the show after ALL the time..." - that would be nice, but I already have 2 others recording in the 9pm time slot.
"just use a 2nd DVR" - i don't have one.
Either way, it doesn't matter. It's the principle of the situation. There HAS to be something that can be done - either from the network end or the DVR end, where the shows are actually recorded based on the SHOW, and not the TIMES. no?
just more frustrating than anything else...

There's one more option you didn't mention - Why not just watch the show when it's on? ;-)

I'm pretty sure it was the Masters going into a playoff and not 60 minutes running long. It's called 60 minutes for a reason.

Is this "no trading personal items" a new rule this season? I seem to recall someone trading personal items in a past season, or at least trying to.
Why do the redheads (well, one at least. But the actions of one reflects on the team) insist on living up to the stereotype of "ugly American?" Why do they have to be so rude and ignorant? Don't they realize they *they* are the ones who don't speak the language?
As for the DVR issues - CBS really should just push it's Sunday lineup back by an hour. But then we wouldn't have to watch live and watch the commercials @@

I like this season because all the teams left are the non-traditional-winning-type teams - all the 20-something couples with a hot chick and athletic guy are gone, etc. - I can't remember all the past winners, but there haven't been too many female teams that won (if any?), or a team with a disabled person, short people, etc.
I wish they would have a website or something with a little more behind the scenes - I've watched every episode of AR ever and I don't remember the phrase "pit start" even being used on the show. I would really like to see what goes into planning and executing a season of AR. There's a lot of little rules that never make it to the air, like the fact that they have to get 3 or 4 plane tickets for their cameraman or they can't fly, etc. At least, that's how it used to be.
