If you're like me, then you're still reeling from the big shocker that happened in last night's episode of House. I spent the entire episode with my mouth hanging wide open, just sputtering, "what?" over and over again. After the episode ended, my boyfriend and I spent a good half an hour arguing about what really happened. Was House's theory correct, or was it just wishful thinking?I thought the episode made it pretty clear, but there was definitely an element of ambiguity when it ended. Today, House executive producers David Shore, Katie Jacobs and, uh, a certain actor from House, held a conference call to answer some of our burning questions, like, you know, "what the hell?"
Okay, are the people who haven't seen the episode gone? Can we talk? So Kal Penn, of course, was the actor on the conference call. He gave lots of information about his new job, as well as what he knew about Kutner's suicide.
In case you haven't heard, Penn decided to leave House in order to take a job in the Obama administration. When I got my chance to speak to him, I had to congratulate Penn on having the best reason for leaving a TV show in history. We've heard "creative differences," we've heard, "I want to do movies," but this is definitely the first time a well-liked actor has left a wildly popular prime time series to work in the White House.
What made Kutner's suicide so shocking is the fact that it literally came out of nowhere. In fact, it was so out of the blue, that House convinced himself that Kutner was murdered-- because if it were a suicide, he would have seen it coming. I was curious to know how far ahead Penn knew about Kutner's suicide, and whether or not that affected his performance in the episodes leading up to it.
Penn told me, "I found out probably, half way through shooting episode 18, and no, the performance didn't change. That was the first thing I asked David Shore: 'Do you want me to change anything; do you want this to be informed that he's struggling with something?' And the answer was, 'not really.' This really is something that just comes out of left field in episode 20. We don't want to lead anyone on, and we also don't want to mislead anyone. It just is what it is, and there's no explanation for it." He goes on to say, "there are no codes [in previous] episodes for people to decipher."
The suddenness of Kutner's suicide led many viewers to believe, like House did, that it wasn't a suicide at all, but a murder. Some have speculated that the reason Taub was acting so weird is because he actually killed Kutner. On most television shows, this would be a lingering question that would be the subject of great debate for the rest of the season. House, however, is not most television shows.
David Shore and Katie Jacobs told us unequivocally that Kutner's death, was in fact a suicide. Shore says that the "why?" of it is what made him decide to go with this storyline, "[Penn's decision to leave] gave us an opportunity to do something unexpected and what's really exciting about it is it's a question that House can't answer, and he's the man with the answers to everything. It's really unexpected for the Kutner character, and that's what was exciting about it-- the unexpected nature of the event and the fact that there are no simple answers."
While there may be no simple answers about why Kutner killed himself, the simple answer about whether or not he did, is "yes."
What do you think about House's big twist? Is the suddenness of Kutner's death a great dramatic device, or a cheat ot the viewers who have spent the last couple of years investing themselves in the new characters? Leave your comments below.

I love the show AND THINK THEY COULD HAVE TAKEN HIM OFF A BIT EASIER. FOR Example he had to take a leave to help people outside our country. Now thats good. I am disapointed because I liked the character.
Oh well everyone needs to move on. Will miss him

right, they could have done it a dozen different ways.
but Shore and the writers decided to do it in the most shocking/jarring way - they want to keep people interested in the show, and they want people to talk about the show.

I've had a family friend commit suicide & I have to say this episode rang true to what I experienced. He wasn't a huge part of my life, but "Bryan" had a little presence in my mind. He liked art & was going to college next year; he seemed fairly predictable. Then one evening I'm talking to my mom over dinner & his mom calls. All of a sudden it was like I didn't speak English anymore. Bryan killed himself? It didn't make any sense. Was she saying that Bryan - my age Bryan - was dead?
At the time, I couldn't help wondering about his other friends. Maybe they'd done something and covered it up, like House's theory. Even now, since I found out he was on prozac, I wonder if he was a victim of the drug. (Now those kind of antidepressants have to be labeled with a warning about sudden risk of suicide in children under 18). Just like on the show, no easy answers & a great big hole screaming "why?"

Iac,
I'm sorry for your loss. Years and years ago, I, too, had a friend commit suicide. I wasn't terribly close to Fred, but we joked around almost every day. He was always laughing. One day when he wasn't at work, I was told he killed himself. We were all young; I thought it was just an incredibly tasteless joke. It wasn't.
About 20 years have passed. I've never forgotten Fred. I've never forgotten the day I heard the news. And I will never, never understand what happened. There were absolutely no clues.
What happened on House was incredibly true to real life. I'm actually really impressed the subject was handled in the oposite of a Lifetime-movie-of-the-week sort of way. There are no clues. There are no good reasons for suicide. You leave behind sad and confused people who cared about you.
Kudos to the creative team of House.

@Suetu:
Saying that there are no good reasons for suicide is a bit callous and presumptuous on your part. While YOU may not see a good reason for suicide, you are not suffering the way someone who is contemplating suicide might be. If someone has been through multiple rounds of chemo and radiation therapy to treat cancer that is not going away and their family's financial situation is in ruins, etc, etc...and you tell them, "those aren't good reasons," that would be pretty arrogant on your part. You might be strong enough to deal with the physical, emotional, and psychological pain the other person is experiencing, but they might not be.

I thought the show last night was a GREAT way to show the viewers that House truly has feelings! What they may be is up to the interputation of the viewer. House reminds me of myself misunderstood most of the time and always painfully honest!

I thought I missed something at the beginning of the show. House was just his normal self in the show. Shows no mercy, but I love watching. I think Bryan made a mistake leaving the show just to work with Obama. I do wish him well.

I am kind of bummed that one of my favorite characters is gone now, but whatever; they will find a new way to keep me hooked, I am pretty sure. Just not another "Survivor" theme to pick a new doctor, IF they do replace Kutner.

I'm sorry to see him go but I think Kal Penn will be an excellent addition to the Obama administration. He's incredibly intelligent and his social views are very relevant to the current atmosphere. He's taught at the University of Pennsylvania and is doing his graduate work at Stanford right now. So, in response to Dennis Phillips' comment--no, he's nothing like Arnold!

It was an excellent episode because it seemed so real. As with any suicide, those left behind are left with hundreds of questions and "what if's." House's reaction was very true to his character, as was Thirteen's and Foreman's. And as always, Wilson was generous in his grief and worried about his friend. I will miss Kutner's character. And last of all, Taub's reaction was the most moving.

I had a friend that commiter suicide but there were signs that we did'nt recogize at the time. He was doing drugs and having illusanations. He was battling God verses the voices in his head. His wife had left him for another man, a fellow worker. My husband blames himself for not being there enough for our friend.
