Dancing with the Stars: Week 5

Melissa Rycroft on Dancing with the Stars(S08E08) With the passion of the Paso Doble and the grace of the Viennese Waltz, most of the contestants have proven that they deserve to be here. Even Steve-O has improved leaps and bounds since week one.

Carrie Ann was on the attack the whole night. She had to be angry at her hairdresser and took it out on the contestants. This week was one of those weeks where the lift continues to be debated. She accepts Shawn for being artistic, but penalizes Melissa for a flub. More analysis after the jump.

Chuck & Julianne
Viennese Waltz – Chuck is worried about being part of the middle of the pack, but after the Woz and Holly left, I'd be afraid that I was in the back of the pack. Julianne decides to focus on passion. She points out that he looks better when he's making fun of professionals (He's still being high-school-jock mean). While they dance I can't help but dislike Chuck's weird grin, he's putting his stress in his teeth. As a counter-balance, Julianne floated around the dance floor like cotton candy.

Len thought that Chuck came out of hibernation. The footwork still needs improvement. Bruno believes that he's stepping out of Julianne's shadow. There's still a little bit of nervousness in his movements. Carrie Ann disagrees. She's still looking for more. There's a questionable lift, he loses his focus, and he doesn't have all the confidence that he should have. Score: 23 (7, 8, 8)

Lawrence & Edtya
Paso Doble – Lawrence is one of the contestants that should connect the Tango to the Paso. Unfortunately, he has trouble with finding the beats in both. Edyta wants him to find power and intensity. I wish for one night where Edyta wears her legwarmers on the dance floor. Lawrence still seems too staccato for dancing, even with the intensity of the Paso. I'm convinced that Edyta is still doing all the work for him.

Bruno thought that he was the prince of darkness. It started off rough, but he got his feet moving in the middle. Carrie Ann thinks that he has a limited range of motion, but he uses the motion well. She appreciates that he worked the music better. Len appreciated the intensity and was afraid, but the dance quality still lacks. Score: 20 (6, 7, 7)

Shawn & MarkViennese Waltz – Shawn's Lindy Hop was all tricks and not enough dance. This week they decide to work on technique. He then uses the key words of Kristi Yamaguchi to teach spins. Although she's frustrated in practice, it doesn't show at all during the dance. The dance is beautiful, but I don't appreciate her posture. It's her height that makes her posture look off.

Carrie Ann loved the simplicity because it showed technique. The last lift she decides to shun because it was artistic. Len loved the lyrical nature, but the footwork lacked a forward step on the heel. Bruno thought she was sweet and light. He liked the flow, musicality, and simplicity. Bruno mentions the shoulders slowly rising in the dance. Score: 26 (9, 8, 9)

Melissa & TonyPaso Doble – Melissa needs to be serious for the Paso, but she also struggles with the steps. Tony sees the intensity when she's angry. I'm biased about the dance. I love Lady GaGa, so the performance automatically is good in my book. The spinning of her dress and the high kicks were wonderful.

Len thought the routine was done well. He points out some small blunders and the lack of aggression. Bruno compares her to Carmen. Although most of it was beautiful, she made mistakes and it stunned her confidence. Carrie Ann loves the choreography, but she was off balance. There was a questionable lift, as well. Score: 25 (8, 8, 9)

David & KymViennese Waltz – Kym appreciates David's focus while they practice. He has a brace on his knee and I hope it doesn't become a problem later. I'm in love with Kym's fan sequence. David makes a weird face when he has to be serious that just looks silly. I also think that they intentionally picked the tails on his jacket to cover his bottom.

Bruno thought there were good moments. He thought the leg lifts were unnecessary; the steps weren't classic. Carrie Ann thinks that there's disconnect because the two don't harmonize. Len loved the story. It was good even though it had a weak middle. Score: 22 (7, 8, 7)

Gilles & Cheryl
Paso Doble – Gilles increased his sexual attractiveness by 300%. First he looks like the sexiest father when he got to play with his boy. Second, he showed his wonderful chest. And finally, he performed the textbook Paso Doble routine where all the moves were hard hitting, but still graceful. He gets a standing ovation.

Carrie Ann thought it was breathtaking. She loves the essence of the dance. Len thought it was a little hectic, he appreciates the passion. Bruno thought he nailed it. Score: 29 (10, 9, 10)

Steve-O & Lacey
Viennese Waltz - Although Steve-O has improved, he hasn't had any score change. Some of Steve-O's Jackass posse helps his confidence. We actually saw no practice. I didn't get the mime story, but Lacey created really beautiful choreography.

Len thought it was his best dance. Bruno loved the timing, but the technique needs help. Carrie Ann liked the emotional quality, but he needs to work on his posture. Score: 18 (6, 6, 6)

Ty & Chelsie
Paso Doble – Ty should be able to connect the idea of the bull fight with his experience with bulls. He decides to introduce Chelsie to a real bull. I'm happy to see Ty show some passion in his face, but his steps were robotic. Chelsie also stepped on her dress again, but this time nothing happened.

Bruno thought it was robotic and metallic. The steps were too stiff. Carrie Ann lost her dancer from last week. He's thinking too much. Len thought this dance wasn't as good as the weeks prior, but he is still showing improvement. Score: 21 (7, 7, 7)

Lil Kym & DerekViennese Waltz – Lil Kym has a career outside of this show! She's short on time so Derek is trying to change moves quickly. It causes stress and tears. The dance is pretty. She continues that porn face whenever she wants to make emphasis, though.

Carrie Ann felt like she was the mom who watched her daughter. She likes the perfect match between the two. Len loved the musicality and lyrical style. He thought there was a little bit of footing trouble and a lack of traditional steps. Bruno loved how sassy and sexy she made the Viennese Waltz. He appreciates the harmony between the two. Score: 26 (9, 8, 9)

Looking at the scores: Steve-O, Lawrence, and David should be worried. I think Ty has a bigger fanbase than the rest. As much as I dislike Lawrence's steps, I'm over David's weird demeanor and hope he goes soon. Tomorrow we are going to have Etta James, Demi Lovato, the Macy's stars of dance segment, stereotypical filler about the contestants, and the dance off.
