The news that we've been expecting "any day now," has finally come. Friday Night Lights has officially been renewed for two more seasons. NBC has decided to continue the financial model that they used this season and air the upcoming seasons on DirecTV first before putting them on NBC. I was skeptical of the DirecTV arrangement before they did it this season, because I was afraid it would ruin the season for people like me, who don't subscribe to the satellite service. However, I have been able, with minimal effort, to avoid even small spoilers for season 3.
While I agree with Hemal that FNL has an uphill battle with several of its key characters graduating this year, I disagree with her assertion that it shouldn't be renewed because of it. What makes Friday Night Lights so great is the cast, but even more than that, it's the way the writers have crafted the characters and storylines. Sure, JD McCoy is no Tim Riggins, but I have faith that the show will find its way. I only hope that more viewers will find their way to it.

Oh, man. I looked at your comment and thought, "yeah, I know. What's your point?" And then I looked up at my title. I have no idea why I wrote that, but it's fixed. Thanks!

Nope, Lyla and Tyra get together. The Taylors get divorced and bob Dole makes a random appearance as the new owner of Garrity Motors.

A typo. My fault, since I added the name of the show in the title. Temporary blog blindness, I guess. It's been fixed.

@YouFaceTheTick I post this here because I saw your comment on the referenced post above...
What 'turning back the age clock on 3 characters' do you mean? Did I miss something in S3?

Zach Gilford turned 27 in January and Adrianne Palicki will turn 26 on May 6th.
They are quite old for highschoolers. Or sophomores.

The show had Riggins and Tyra and Lyla at LEAST Juniors in Season 1. Lyla seemed to have graduated in Season 2. Then in Season 3 Riggins, Tyra and Lyla are suddenly seniors again - meaning they were supposedly sophomores in Season 1.
That's impossible to believe. Streets was supposedly best friends with Riggins. No way they were two years apart and that close, just as Riggins wouldn't have been a star at the start of his sophomore year (at best that would mean he had one great freshman year). Also no way Lyla was a sophomore who had dated Streets for years as Season 1 indicated.
I loved Season 1 of FNL but by Season 3 they'd gone crazy and only stayed consistent with Julie, Matt and Landry.

I thought it was something other than that. From his comment:

It sound like there was some kind of soap-esque aging shenanigans going on. I don't remember that.

Hm. Sure it's a possibility because of Minka Kelly - I mean her and Saracen are the only pillars in the show left standing and you could timewarp the show two or three years - especially because in real Life the actors are all much older it wouldn't be a problem. They would only have to make J.D. and Minka Kelly look older if they show up again - also it would be an option to simply jump the whole college time to get all the other actors back on the show - I mean how would you have them appear at all when they are all over the country at their colleges? A time-jump isn't such a bad idea and we might see
SPOILER WARNING
the new team of coach Taylor in a state that actually is already kind of competetive instead of watching him form a team - you can't think that in it's first year East Dillon could be anything else than a default win for any other team especially after the re-zoning the Dillon Panther Booster Club did in 3x11.
