(S02E20) "It's your birthday; it's whatever you want." - Lily to JennyEpisode 20, we're nearing the end of the season. Only five episodes left, which includes the episode that will be flashback heavy to set the tone for the potential Gossip Girl spin-off about a younger Lily.
This week's episode, even if it mostly surrounded Jenny's birthday party, set the tone for what's to come for all of the characters in play. Conflict between characters will be the key word to describe the upcoming episodes.
Instead of doing a normal review, I offer you what I think this week's events will mean for the characters in the upcoming five episodes. Note that I am practically unspoiled about the five remaining episodes; therefore, my "what's to come" take below doesn't include official spoilers. If I happen to be dead on, then it's just pure luck.
Jenny and Serena
Lily told Jenny that it was her birthday so she could decide. As we saw, it should have been "it's your birthday; it's whatever Serena decides." Serena throwing a party for herself and not Jenny and then leaving the country without asking for permission is clearly a taste of what's to come: trouble. Gabriel telling Serena about remembering her as "Savana" makes me feel as if Serena will go back to her old destructive self. If Serena was willing to go to Spain without asking for permission and without thinking about missing school, etc., you bet that she'll be willing to do more, and that "more" may involve Gabriel. You can't deny the sparks at the end of the episode.
I also smell trouble down Jenny's path. I get that she was pissed that Serena highjacked her birthday party, but I sense that Jenny may start to rebel some more in the coming days. After all, she just turned 16 and will want more freedom, etc. Let's just hope she won't go down the road she went earlier this season. That was a bad storyline and shouldn't be revisited.
Dan
Since Dan needs money to go to Yale and because Rufus doesn't want Lily's help, Dan will more than likely need to get a good paying job. If that doesn't work, it wouldn't surprise me if Dan decides not to go to Yale this year. Maybe he'll take a year off to get the needed money, or maybe he'll try to get into a less pricey college.
What will be interesting, though, is when Dan will find out who Scott is. Even if Scott's parents deleted the incoming call, Dan will more than likely try to contact "his fan" again to chit chat. But I wonder if Scott really knows who Dan is or if Scott is really only a fan. What do you think?
Rufus and Lily
They seem to be on the same page now, so I predict they'll remain a healthy couple. However, they'll have a lot of heartaches and problems to face with Serena who's taking a wrong turn, with trying to find money for Dan's tuition, and maybe with the news that their lovechild is not dead.
Chuck/Vanessa/Nate/Blair
Love, lust and backstabbing is clearly in the air for these four. Even if Vanessa and Chuck said at the end of the episode that they want "last night" to stay secret, it's clear that they have sparks. It wouldn't surprise me if they remain friends with benefits while trying to make Nate and Blair jealous. As for the latter couple, they'll probably be on cloud nine for a while, but since they didn't work out the first time they dated, I don't think they will last long. But, as I've said last week, as long as it keeps Blair on the right path, I'm all for Nate and Blair.
Dorotea
Since they introduced a foreign doorman in the same episode in which Dorotea says she doesn't get much lovin', it wouldn't surprise me if these two hook up down the road.

the doorman was reading a book that Dorota recommended to him. i say you're spot on with the help getting some loving soon enough.

The best part of the episode was the doorman's existence. We need more Dorota storylines and STAT.
I don't think Jenny will go down the "rebel road" again. I think the point of that Jenny/Serena squabble was to show Lily and Rufus that as much as they want to jump in and be a "family," there are still a lot of growing pains and so they just have to pace themselves.
As for Nate/Blair/Vanessa/Chuck, well it was just awesome. The faces of Nate and Blair when Vanessa kissed Chuck had me in stitches. Ultimately I don't really know what I want for these characters. And while I see why everyone is with one another, I don't really get why Nate is with Blair. Yes, she's a friend-in-need, but as they hammered throughout the episode they don't really have heat. Dan and the teacher had more heat than them.

I think that's the point they were making - that Blair and Nate aren't really a good couple. Its just that Blair thinks they belong together but they really dont.
What time does school start for these kids such that they can get up, get showered, get pastries, and then get to the UES for a leisurely breakfast....

She isn't. Blair has had one each season! But, I think that's it...

I think we're on the same page on everything except Nate/Blair. I think Blair's wild side lasted too short a time! Bring back the downward spiral, at least for a bit!
