I made it my business to catch the episode of Family Guy which guest-voiced the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and I have to say I was somewhat disappointed.Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed some parts of the episode. The "shut up Wil" line by Patrick Stewart had me in stitches, as well as the sudden death of Denise Crosby (obviously, the writers are ST:TNG fans). Hell, Patrick Stewart is a recurring guest on Seth McFarlane's other series American Dad.
It just seemed to me that after the brilliant Star Wars parody from last year, they would do something more with such a line-up of talent than simply "Stewie gets to hang out and go bowling with the cast." It was even relegated to the "B" plot, with the "A" plot being Meg's sudden faith in God as a result of watching Kirk Cameron on TV.
I was hoping for something more akin to an episode of The Next Generation done Family Guy-style. Or would that have been redundant of the Star Wars episode? What do you think? Was the episode decent or could it have used improvement?

Having unfortunately missed the episode I can't speak in specifics, but doing a direct TNG parody would have been as you say, redundant. Especially since FG's take on SW:ESB and SW:RJ are coming up soon. I really doubt that McFarlane would have been able to get the cast TNG if it was just going to be a spoof for the entire episode.

I was not disappointed by what they did, so much as that there was so little of it. Really, should have been the a story and should have had a lot more going on. I feel bad because I told others to watch, and really, it wasn't worth it. Wil Wheaton rules no matter what though!

Personally I just hated the Meg plotline so completely that it ruined the episode for me.
Peter mentioned something about changing the channel - I probably should have listened.
Waste of the TNG actors' time if you ask me.

I'm laughing at the thought of people being disappointed by the ST:NG cast, just like Stewie was. There was this big build up on their appearance, only to be let down by what they actually did in real life. Which, I think, was exactly what Seth was going for. His rant at the end really brought it home. People want them to be those characters so much that anything else is a huge let down. Do you think Patrick Stewart walks around and tells people to 'make it so' in his real life?
I liked this episode on many levels, like a Bloomin' Onion. Engage!

I thought it was a truly horrible episode. Not a single laugh.
And since when can you convince religious people that religion is a load of crap by pointing out all the bad things in their lives? Like that would ever work, you'd just get the story of Job shoved in your face ("god is testing my faith"... "god works in myserious ways"... blah blah blah). The people with the worst lives are always the most religious. I'm surprised Meg hadn't found religion a long time ago, come to think of it - is there any character more pathetic than Meg Griffin? If she were a real person she'd be an ultra-fundamentalist, uber-evangelical Christian walking around with a Bible and spending all her spare time at church. "Knowing" that the creator of the universe loves you and has a personal relationship with you is the ultimate ego booster, and compensates for having flat titties, a big ass, an "unfresh" vagina (as we learned about Meg last week), no friends, and a family that hates you.
Horrible episode. I can't recall the last really good episode of Family Guy... maybe the star wars/blue harvest ep. I just think the writers (manatees?) have gotten very lazy, knowing that they can show 22 minutes of pop culture references and stewie quirks, and the die hard FG fans will love it regardless of whether or not it's actually funny.
Meanwhile I think the quality of American Dad has improved steadily over the 4 seasons. Right now AD is by far the superior show, infinitely funnier than FG.

I couldn't agree with you more about EVERYTHING in this post. Absolutely spot on. Family Guy rarely makes me laugh, it's like Simpsons after Futurama spun off...the new show seems to get all the focus while the old show rests on its laurels and reputation. The quality of the past two or three seasons of Family Guy are pathetic when compared to the first two.

I enjoyed it, although tonights episode of The Simpsons was one of the funniest episodes in a while. Definitely preferred it over this episode of Family Guy, though Peter advising you to change the channel when he said it was going to be a Meg story was pretty damn funny.

I laughed my butt off at the TNG cast parts, but as said, there wasn't enough of it. The rest of the episode was pretty pointless and yeah, really just not funny (and this is why nobody likes Meg). They could have done just oh so much more with this episode that it really does feel like a waste.

Are Meg and Brian getting spun off too? 'Cause I'm pretty sick of both of them.

I was very disappointed. There was too much theism-bashing and not anywhere near enough Star Trek TNG. Wil Wheaton says on his Twitter that he remembers there being a lot more in the script for the TNG cast, and hopes it makes it to the DVD. I don't get offended by the religion jokes, but afterwards I felt as though I had sat through a very poor atheist catechism presentation (if they had those).

It was definitely funny that they took the cast of a beloved series and relegated them to the B plot. And there are few shows now that break the fourth wall like this. Peter actually turned to all the drooling TNG fans and said. "This is a meg episode. Here's the remote" Hilarious. And brilliant.
Brilliant because they took a cheap gag and said "FU" to all those watching because of the gag. Which of course makes those of us who like the show feel loved (especially those of us who feel manipulated by gimmicks). One cult show that non-fans don't really get versus another of the same.

I mainly watch Family Guy on Adult Swim. Although it has it has moments, Family Guy gets by on largely lazy humor.
This episode actually had structure and narrative that created actual jokes. The Will Wheaton pronunciation joke was a terrific call back to a similar joke used in another Meg-centric episode.
For those of you who did not laugh your ass at that joke alone, either (1) were waiting for Masterpiece Theater to start, (2) hold a double standard because this form of comedy was used in almost every Arrested Development episode, or (3) found Arrested Development similarly unfunny.
And, yes, I want to order a bacon McDLT with beer.
Now, the two preceding Simpsons episodes were simply terrible. Either find new writers or end the show.

Except for the last scene all the TNG material was on-line as a teaser to watch the show! A well baited trap that I fell into! Very irritating. I've never been a fan of FG and now I know to avoid any similar traps, no matter how tasty the bait.

I thought it was a waste, overall Seth is falling into the "I'm rich and famous, now I want to impose my beliefs on you" trap that so many famous people fall into.
I call it Rosie syndrome. Family Guy hasn't been funny since the "Peter's Two Dads" ep. I'm just about done with it.

I completely agree. As of late I've been watching the show just because it's part of my Sunday lineup, but it has been stale for a while. It's not what it used to be and I barely get any laughs out of it anymore and just feel like the creator is just milking it and laughing at us at this point.

I don't usually watch Family Guy, because it just tends to bore/annoy me. I checked out this episode on recommendation from a friend due the "make fun of Kirk Cameron" angle...which I'm always for. I was totally disappointed, but admitedly, Family Guy just isn't my thing, so I have no idea if it's the series itself that has slid so far down into stupidity and pointlessness, or if it was just a case of this episode being a bad example. Either way though, the episode was boring as all hell, full of pointless "jokes" that made me wonder if the writers actually wanted the viewers to watch or not, and just generally was painful to watch...
