It looks the lighthouse may be switched off before the end of 2009. CBS is expected to determine whether or not to renew Guiding Light later this week. All things considered, I think the network is going to call it a day for the 72-year-old soap opera. The ratings have been lagging and the way Guiding Light is situated around the country – being broadcast in different time slots instead of having a regular fixed time like the rest of the CBS soaps – it's not likely to ever challenge in the Nielsens.
And you can't even use the old standby argument that Guiding Light is the best soap on TV – an Emmy winner – because this past year has been a rough one for the show. Changing the filming from traditional studio sets to something raw like cinéma vérité ("let's shoot in a parking lot or under a tree"), hasn't helped. In fact, it's been distracting and hard to get used to, despite the still prominent actors and good stories.
The return of Grant Aleksander earlier this year has helped a bit, but overall, I'd be lying if I said I have great faith in CBS sticking with the show beyond the September 2009 end date.
Still, if the show gets a reprieve – even if it's only to keep it on the air for three more years so it can reach its 75th anniversary, an historic achievement that would probably never be equaled (not even by Law & Order!) – I'll be the first to cheer. In fact, maybe that's what CBS should announce. The end of Guiding Light will be on the 75th anniversary. Set a final date and let fans enjoy till then.
Unfortunately for a soap fan like me, I have to face the fact that daytime has changed to point that soap operas are no longer viable entertainment. Reality shows, talk, judge shows and even sitcom reruns in syndication could be what covers the daytime line up in the years to come.

I think you should write to CBS with your 75 year plan, stat! I stopped watching in 2008, and came back when Phillip did. Overall I've been pleased, but they are still lacking on the storyline front. I actually enjoy the outdoor scenes, especially in the snow, etc. You rarely (if ever) get that in television, let alone movies, so its been a real treat for me.
I agree that they will probably all be gone soon. I fear all scripted entertainment may be soon gone from TV. That will be awful!

It's about time they dumped the soaps. The old ladies who just want their "stories" are few and far between, and the soaps will be the first casualties as the TV networks reconfigure their daytime schedules.
I can really see a resurgence of daytime game shows on the networks as a replacement for the ailing soaps. For the most part, game shows are a heck of a lot less expensive to produce than soaps because the soaps have all sorts of people they have to pay humongous amounts of money to, whereas the game shows can be shoved off to an external producer, they handle the production costs, the only costs the network has to bear is the cost of the contract between them and the producers. And in this economic climate, the less money the networks have to spend, the better.

Your opinion about "old ladies" and their "stories" is wrong. Sure do appreciate the stereotype.

My sister does not like "the stories" either but she is a bitter "old lady". And just for your information. I have been watching the stories since I have been able to tie my shoes and I am NOT an "old lady". I am young and still in my prime. I have an active healthy life and enjoy my soaps. GL will be sorely missed. Oh and I am an educated woman 3 times so stop steroetyping please. it is belittle to others. and it makes you look small minded.

I feel horrible that I stopped watching years ago, like I've disappointed my grandmother (she died in 1974).

I am not the only one to share my opinion. Ask any person who's worked at a local TV station when some breaking news cuts right into their "stories" and tell me I'm still wrong.

I am saddened by the news that one of the best shows on television may be ending. I am hoping that this is just another piece of gossip that is floating around and has been for the last couple of years. I like the idea of having an end date for the show. Not because I want Guiding Light to end, but because I think better writing comes out of shows when they have a clear ending (ie Lost, BSG). The 75th anniversary sounds perfect. Guiding Light has really stepped up the pace recently with their story lines. Grant's return and the Otalia storyline have added a fresh look to this show. I won't even touch the old ladies and their stories comment. That is just beyond ignorant.

OMG I don't know what show you've been watching but GL has been killing it for the past few months!
Crystal Chappell and Jessica Leccia as Olivia and Natalia are bringing superb performances day in and day out. The writing on this storyline is simply amazing, making the "Otalia" storyline one of the best written LOVE STORIES on daytime ... or primetime for that matter and I would absolutely hate to see this show go when it's just getting good and interesting. And I'm not just talking about the same sex aspect of it, this is one of the best written, long burning love stories I've seen in a long time if ever. It's been a joy to experience and I want CBS to give the writers and actors a chance to see where it goes and where this show can go. They're creating a supercouple here!
They are working on the most important part to make the show better which is the writing and the actors are bringing their A game on, especiall Crystal Chappell. She's been knocking it off the park for the past year and especially the past few months and CBS needs to give them a bit more time to get the word out and ratings up.
People are getting excited about this show again now and I'd hate for them to give it the ax before they'll truly see what it could rise up to.

In my opinion Guiding Light is one of the best daytime soaps on right now. I started watching because of the Otalia story line...and was hooked and now I have to say that the entire show is a must watch for me. What Guiding Light has done with the Otalia s/l is brilliant. A slow building true soap opera love story with lots of angst. It's made me laugh...it's made me cry and on some days it's made me want to throw the remote at the tv...but that's what it's suppose to do. The writing has been superb. Crystal Chappell and Jessica Leccia are electrifying to watch, what amazing on screen chemistry. I'm excited and very appreciative of Guiding Light for telling this story...no labels attached.
Thanks!

Let's not write the eulogy for Guiding Light yet. April was given awhile ago as the time CBS would be making the decision, so this isn't news. The buzz on the boards about Guiding Light and specifically the Otalia story line has been overwhelming and Guiding Light and CBS know it.
That being said, anyone who cares about Guiding Light and the genre in general has to get vocal. Post on boards, email, write and call CBS. This show is worth saving.

I stopped watching in 2005 (when the new Cassie came in) after having watched for about 20 years. I recently started adding it to my DVR queue again due to Philip's return. I was pleasantly surprised at what I found, many veterans!

I just started watching Guiding Light and I love it! The acting is great and the stories are getting better every day. Olivia and Natalia love story is the best writing on daytime TV right now, and there is so much to look forward to with Phillip's return, Shayne/Dinah/Marina/Mallet story. CBS, please keep the Light shining.

I really hope it gets to stick around for a while longer. My Mom got me hooked on it when I was a college freshman and we bonded a lot while watching and discussing the plotlines and characters. I used to schedule my college courses around it every semester (whenever possible) to watch it live. Thanks for the memories GL.

I totally disagree with this article. GL is on the way up. It has gained viewership. It has been getting great press up to the point this rumor came out. Otalia is the hottest thing in pop culture much less daytime TV. CBS has to keep it on the air. It is just turning the corner.

I haven't watched GL since the mid to late 80's heck I remember the B-52's guest starring at Floyd's nightclub LOL but when Ellen Wheeler (Another World / Dark Shadows) took over the Producing helm, I checked in to see the outdoor shoots and loved the look and feel of the show and have started watching again. The comment of keeping the show on until the 75th anniversary date would be a great sign of respect to the show.

I have been a Guiding Light fan for over thirty years. My grandmother who was born in the late 1800's first listened to it on the radio!
Please, CBS, allow this wonderful soap (The BEST on air, IMO, at this time, and getting better) to make its 75 yr. anniversary. The storylines and the writing are wonderful now and this could be the biggest comeback EVER!! No one I have spoken to wants another piece of fluff "reality" or talk show. Guiding Light has substance and is in the process of evolving (soaps will have to evolve to survive and Guiding Light is aware of this) and I LOVE the results--Great things take TIME!! PLEASE, DO NOT PULL THE PLUG ON GUIDING LIGHT!!

It figures that as soon as I get back into a soap opera for the first time in 20 years it goes and gets offed. Well, at least I got to see the Otalia storyline before it went away - that's the best story in TV today.

I have been watching GL for 39 years. My mom got me started. I have gone through actor changes, and change backs, and deaths and come backs. Sometimes, I am not happy with what goes on, but it is like part of my life. I see it every day, it is the first show I watch when I get home from work. I am saddened at the thought it will be over. Will it be forgotten like "Somerset" ? I hope at least Reva and Josh get back together, with all their kids, and Johnathan and Lizzie and Sarah reunite. I would be okay, if everything came together in the end, with no loose ends. Will miss GL terribly, but you know what would be great? Including the radio show, put on DVD from beginning to end. What an awesome gift!!
