(S05E18) "I'm a fan of daytime television" – Bailey
Tonight was the big night for the whole Izzie storyline getting into full gear. On a positive note, this episode happily shows that all of the characters can actually interact with others without it leading into a bad fallout or sex. Unlike last week, all the characters were themselves. Also, only having two surgeries to focus on was much better than splitting everyone up. Otherwise, it gets confusing.
Does it always turn out that the first year interns are overly dramatic? The side story between Megan/Pierce/Steve was funny because it sounds just like something Meredith/George/Alex/Izzie would have gone through. More analysis after the jump.
The idea of Meredith/George working together without awkwardness is amazing. Meredith actually taking a Bailey-like stand with her interns was great. Not seeing her as a mopey, pale, depressed character is always a good change. Finally getting to see George be George is also great. He was in the background so much that I assumed that he would be smart enough to put two and two together. Call me a five year old, but I giggled at the whole enema situation.
I appreciate Derek taking on the role of philosopher for the episode. Watching his interaction with Callie and Owen and the three not knowing how to deal with death was touching. Finding something that's repressed being pried open has to hurt. Drinking is not the answer, though. I guess every surgeon has that one surgery that eats away at you; one you just can't forget. I liked that the Chief eventually talked to Derek after all the complaints from him at the hospital. I didn't understand why he didn't just go in to Derek himself. In theory, he (with the help of Bailey) sent Meredith, Callie, and Owen to Derek before he went and talked to him.
There's a part of me that was upset that Izzie got Christina all worked up. In the end, it was moot. She had to let all the tension out to do her first successful (I'm assuming Ms. Sully did fine) solo surgery, so I understand her telling Alex and Bailey. I get that Christina is perceived as robotic and tactical, but the woman with the hernia was her first solo, and she deserved to be treated well. The quick reassurance that she takes her job seriously, even if she may not answer every silly question, was probably all that Ms. Sully needed. I still appreciate Sandra Oh as a good actress who can go from angry to concerned without a problem. She definitely deserved the Golden Globe and SAG awards. I wonder if this episode will be the one that gets her that fifth Emmy nomination.
There was one thing that bothered me about the whole Izzie situation. While she was having her visions, Izzie told Denny that she chose life. If she rejected the treatment, she would have just been a hypocrite. To make it worse, Denny would probably show up again to pester her. The whole face surgery was an interesting case to parallel with Izzie.
Kudos to Cathy, who left a comment last week about Derek going to operate on Izzie. Yeah, it seemed obvious, but I guess it's all about how they got there that makes it interesting. I also appreciate that Meredith didn't like that Derek would just sit on his laurels and quit.
Also, call me either shallow or squeamish when David, the face transplant guy, first appeared on the screen. I was a little freaked out, like one of those viral videos where you're supposed to look for something and the scary face shows up. I quickly warmed up when David joked about his looks. I disliked the idea of calling the guy "Blowhole," but as a hypocrite, I would have called him "Face-Off."
I disliked the preview for next week telling the viewer (I'm paraphrasing) "This episode will be really dramatic." Excuse me? This show is a drama. It's supposed to be dramatic. It's like the previews on reality shows that say "Most dramatic elimination EVER!!!!!" I get it, I know it's going to be dramatic, don't tell me that it's going to be so big. Now I'm gonna be disappointed.

Good review! I completely agree that Izzie's character has been written inconsistently lately. (I'm a fighter. No, I don't want treatment. Help me, don't tell anyone, thank you.) Only one episode she seemed to arrive at an epiphany when Little Grey said you should fight, because people die of the hiccups. And then all of the sudden this week she's not wanting treatment?

People with brain tumors exhibit inconsistent moods and behavior patterns, so in retrospect, the writing for Izzie has been spot on, not inconsistent as you say. Cancer patients frequently go back and forth between wanting treatment and not wanting it, because they are concerned about their quality of life. For some people, getting another 3 months, 6 months, or a year doesn't matter if they're sick the whole time, especially when they can have a few weeks of relative normalcy with few or no symptoms if they choose not to get treated immediately after diagnosis. I'd say that now that we know that all of Izzie's weirdness was caused by her tumor, I think her emotional up and downs and her reactions are very well scripted considering she's got a 5% chance of survival with surgery, radiation and chemo combined.

Fantastic episode! Definitely one of the best all season.
I really loved that song "Driveway" by Great Northern that plays while Meredith and Derek have their moment together while she pleads for him to help Izzy. Fit the scene so well...I thought i wasn't going to cry but this scene really did it to me. Grey's always has great music, but this scene and song really stuck with me, so I blogged about it here:

Well, at least I'm feeling okay that she won't be killed off. I could very easily see her leaving the show with a new lease on life, but there is no way they are going to put Derek through all of this to have him come back to the OR and kill his girlfriend's good friend. She'll leave on a heartwarming note, rather than a sad one (assuming she leaves).
Regarding the face transplant...um...why would any doctor leave a patient with a face like that for so long? Did I miss something? I must have. I thought he was like that for years. No nose? We could build one. Same with lips. And, unfortunately, without all of the structure underneath, that faceplant (LOL) wasn't going to turn out like it did. Kinda bugged me.

I thought the same thing about Derek/Izzie. If Izzie is supposed to be his comeback surgery, why would they let her die? I wonder if she's actually leaving...

I agree with Modwild above that the lack of structure beneath the face would not have supported the new face OR that the bandages could be removed on the same day to see the new face.
Sometimes GA is just so unbelieveable. I know it's only a tv show but come on......

I've been so lukewarm (to the point of hatred) to the show that I was so shocked to see a VERY GOOD episode. Just fantastic actually. Every character seemed to have a moment and it didn't feel all jumbled and messy like it usually is. Kudos.

Grey's is good again!!! The past 2 episodes stand up against the best the series has offered so far. Good for them. They'd almost lost me, and I didn't think the show would survive without Burke. I'm glad I was wrong.

Well if Katherine Heigl was upset about the lack of a good emmy worthy story for her last year, she must be jumping for joy over this one. Not only can this storyline sustain her through next season, but if she wanted to leave, it will give her terrific drama to sink her teeth into.
I have really enjoyed the last two episodes. It was getting to the point where I would tape GA and watch days, sometimes weeks afterward, but last night I couldn't wait to see what was happening next, just like in season 1 and 2. Hope things stay this good!!!

I'm another viewer who'd just about given up on Grey's Anatomy but the past two episodes remind me of the show was so awesome on Sunday nights (not the mixed up clone that surfaced on Thursday nights.)
A question -- has Patrick Dempsey been styling his hair into that Elvis-worthy pompadour for another role he's playing? I hope McDreamy will visit his barber/stylist for something a bit less retro real soon.
But that's a minor quibble - On the whole I'm delighted that Mer and the gang have found a new lease on life - or at least their careers in medicine. Long may it last.
