It's time for the judge to be judged. American Idol is toodling along this year, and after tonight we'll be down to ten performers (presuming that the new-fangled Judge's Save rule isn't employed). So, now that we are where we are, it seems about the right time to note that the new judge is a dud.
Okay, maybe not a total dud, but she really isn't bringing much to the table. Timidity gets you nowhere on American Idol. She needs to get tougher. She needs more attitude. Apparently, I'm not the only scribe who feels this way.
Kara has all the bona fides to be an American Idol judge. I don't question that she knows her chops. Here's the problem: she doesn't seem very adept at articulating her criticism. She sorta, kinda roams around her comment, meandering into "I just didn't feel it" territory, or falling back on the standard trope, "I would have liked it if you chose a different song."
The Kara experiment hasn't been a total failure, though, and I'll tell you why. While Kara's been frustratingly un-constructive in her criticism, she has actually made Paula Abdul seem more focused. I didn't think that was possible! Paula may be counted on to be a cheerleader, but lately she has been offering more to the singers than Kara.
Last night, for example, she noted that Lil Rounds would have been better off singing two choruses of Martina McBride's "Independence Day" than two verses. That's specific instruction and on target, too, because in a short time slot on American Idol, the chorus would have hit home with more of a hook than the verses did.
Here's my unsolicited advice for Kara D if she wants to be asked back for next season. Give it more attitude and be more decisive in your judgment. If I were a director, I'd put it like this, "Think Judge Judy and stop with the wishy-washy comments." Goodness knows, being sharp as a tack has always worked for Simon!

Dude, totally disagree. Her comments are worth 100 times those of Paula's. Plus, she's prettier and she's not all effed up in the head like Paula. I say keep her, ditch the idiot.

useless. paula is useless as well. when she tells a contestant they are an 'amazing artist' it's a joke. i am all for fawning/fake praise, but it's silly. if they record an album that's great then perhaps one might say amazing artist. but when paula says that i want to burn myself with a match.
they are both useless as judges. for me simon, regardless of what people feel personally about him, is usually the best in terms of actual criticism and praise.

I think you should just go ahead and burn yourself. :) Might exercise the bitterness away.

Frankly, with the exception of Simon, you could get rid of the other three and find almost anyone in the business who could offer more cogent criticism. Find a music producer. Babyface has worked with lots of folks. Benny Medina. L.A. Reid. These are people who know music and know how to market a singer. Anyone whould be better than the three stooges they have now.

I agree with Jason. Paula is the judge that has the weird, roaming comments that don't really help. "Oh, no matter what you do, you'll always have that voice and noone can take that from you." is not a very helpful critique. I think Kara is doing very well, despite being new.

I liked Kara a lot in the audition rounds; I thought she brought a fresh voice and perspective to the show.
In Hollywood week and the three rounds of 12, though, hearing from four judges just disrupted the flow of the show, and her comments started a slippery slope downhill.
Now that we're in the finals, she quickly seems to have become a caricature of herself. Her opinions are kind of like her seat -- halfway between the idiocy of Randy and Paula.
Simon is and always will be king.

I agree, Kara AND Paula need to go. Hell, throw in Dawg-Randy and just leave Simon. I mute the critiques until Simon talks. Say what you will, he is the only one speaking the truth, with constructive critiques. Kara lost me when she called the contestant a "bitch". That was in such poor unprofessional taste. What a waste of time.

Kara brings much more to the table than Paula. I mean seriously, does Paula EVER criticize anyone? Even when she does have something bad to say, she has to say something nice in the same sentence just so she doesn't get booed. She's pathetic.

i agree with Allison.. Kara is hella annoying with her same comments.. and if people have been listening this season, Paula has got a backbone and some new pills and she is much more focused and fun to listen to.. she is actually giving decent advice.. on the other hand kara is just b.sing with her annoying faces that she makes and that condescending tone...ugh!!

Kara knows what she is talking about - so she just needs to spit it out.
I think Paula has been better this season. You need a cheerleader. It plays a role, but her advice has been good even if it comes between "they'll never take that from you" stuff.

Whoa, sounds MUCH more like Paula than Kara to me. Last night Paula rambled and rambled without ever seeming to say anything. Even Simon questioned her "helpful" comments and they got into more than one heated discussion about them. I purposely let my DVR capture enough of the show to get thru the filler but after a while I just let it run thru the commercials so I could forward thru Paula. She's getting worse and worse this year.
Kara? Not so much. I think she's just getting used to the format. Remember, the other three have years of practice doing this and this is just Kara's first season. I would much rather listen to her suggestions and comments than hear Paula ramble in what appears to be a drunken stupor.

I fast-forward through everything other than the performances & Simon's comments. Takes me about 30 minutes to watch a 2 hour show. From what I read in the recaps, I've never missed a single meaningful moment by skipping Paula, Randy, Kara, the group number, Ryan's idiotic comments, or the lame Ford commercials...

I was in the music world for 20 years and she is the only judge than can specifically articulate critique the talent can use.
Paula seems to have fallen in love with her own voice this year. Yakkity Yak.
In the studio Randy knows his stuff but his remarks to the talent makes him seem quasi-brain challenged. Notice I didn't use the "r" word although it would have fit better than "brain challenged".
When it comes down to getting critique on something they could work on for next time, Simon and Kara are the only two that offer them real directives.
I think Randy should be voted of judges island.

After randy made that comment about Adam's rendition of Ring of Fire as being NIN like... yeah, it's time for him to go, he has no idea of what he's talking about.

I CAN'T STAND KARA!!! She's borring and hateful. I'm not much for Paula either, I agree that all three of them should go and just leave Simon, get some different judges next year!! The only reason Paula is there is for the drama of her and Simon.
