Could it be that MTV is backing off of sappy, drawn-out reality shows about hot people doing hot things that you'll never do no matter how hot you'll be, and realizing they are actually called "Music Television"? No, but until that time, here are some comedies they are shopping for their upcoming schedule.
The Viacom-owned network is looking at getting back into the comedy business by ordering pilots for a dumpster load of web-based series and brand new comedy shows.
The only one with a locked deal are 20 episodes of a show called DJ and the Fro about two office zombies who spend their workdays swapping viral videos instead of working for the man. No wonder we're in a recession. Damn you to hell, Dramatic Chipmunk.
The rest are just hovering above the pilot stage. Some of them, however, sound mildly interesting. For instance, the raunchy web series Private High Musical puts the whole High School Musical mess in the dunce corner by doing a musical version of a real American high school, complete with low test scores, suggestive teachers, and STD rates that are higher than a frat house that's low on Febreze. It also stars Dennis #&$*ing Haskins, whom you might know as Mr. Richard #($*in' Belding from Saved by the #$&*ing Bell.
MTV also seems more than a little interested in Long Distance Relationship, another web based series that follows two young lovers separated by the shackles of college who can only grow their love through the magic of Internet webcams. It's actually funny and doesn't sound like something that belongs wedged between tampon commercials on Lifetime.

When is someone going to sue MTV (Music Television) for false advertising? It would be easy to make out a claim - say you purchased a cable package containing MTV because you wanted to watch music videos and music-related programming, and you were defrauded once you realized it was 24/7 Real World/Road Rules/Bam non-music "reality" garbage. Even Beavis and Butthead contained music videos.
Of course, I've never understood why anyone would want to watch commercials for newly released albums when they can go listen to whatever music they like on their stereo systems. It's like the idiots who listen to classic rock stations all day waiting for them to play Led Zeppelin, when the moron has a CD player along with all of Zep's albums sitting right there (which also sounds better than radio and won't be interrupted by a cackling DJ and his fart jokes and sound effects).
But MTV is so non-music that it's very name is legally misleading and deceptive.

I've pretty much sworn MTV off because I'm not in their target demo anymore, but I've stumbled onto a few gems recently. Human Giant is a very funny sketch show which i"m not certain will be back, but catch reFUNS if you can. Also, I've been impressed with the College humor show, a "behind the scenes" look at how the website runs daily operations. It's funny and they have some quirky, creative, sketches and situations. All in all a pleaant surprise
