You guys, American Idol is getting serious. That opening with the judges walking out onto the stage and Seacrest lording over all of them? that was intense. It's the Top 13, and we're in the Kodak Theater. It's the big show, guys. The audience is completely psyched, but Simon quickly brings everyone down in that special way of his by announcing that tomorrow's show is going to be double-elimination. This makes sense, since we have the same number of episodes to find this year's Idol, but we have one extra contestant.
My favorite thing about this episode is that the theme is the music of Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson, as you may recall, is one of those artists that the judges have said should just never be touched. So despite the fact that they have told Kris Allen, among others, that they should not sing Michael Jackson songs, we have an entire night devoted to just that. Sounds like a good idea to me!

Feb. 26, 2009: Adam Lambert Makes the Top 12

Lil Rounds "The Way You Make Me Feel"
Lil is wearing the top half of a prom dress and some really terrifying pleated pants. She's also in the first slot, which is the very opposite of the pimp spot. But whatever, she's totally getting through. She did a good job with the song, but I wasn't completely blown away. I've always been hot and cold on her, and tonight was a little cold for me, for some reason. Simon pretty much agrees with me and, of course, gets booed.
Scott MacIntyre "Keep the Faith"
My boyfriend loved this performance and likened Scott to a young Elton John. Maybe it's just the fact that I hated the song itself, but the performance underwhelmed me. He's a great piano player and has good showmanship, but it just didn't do if for me. But kudos to him for learning that song on the piano so quickly. That's pretty impressive. Simon has the best quote ever: "It's fine being artistic -- just not on this show."
Danny Gokey "P.Y.T."
I'm kind of creeped out by the fact that he matched his glasses to his shirt, but I find his crazy dancing hilariously entertaining. His performance was fun, and I quite enjoyed it. Simon thought the dancing was hideous, which it was, but once again: hilarious. This is my favorite performance that I've seen from him so far.
Michael Sarver "You Are Not Alone"
I guess it makes sense that the Roughneck wants to show his sensitive side, but come on. Does he have to sing the schmaltziest song ever written? This is a terrible song choice, and thus I am completely turned off by his performance, although he does a fine technical job with it.
Jasmine Murray "I'll Be There"
It must be said that if nothing else, Jasmine is brave. Not only is she taking on Michael Jackson, but Mariah Carey as well. She does a really good job with it, though. The only thing is I think it could have used a bit more "oomph." I'm also curious as to why she's wearing a nightgown.
Kris Allen "Remember the Time"
I liked Kris's version of "Man in the Mirror," but this is way better. He's adorable and likable, and while I'm not sure how necessary the guitar really was on this song, it serves as a nice prop for him and allows him to do some cute Jason Mraz-y dance moves. (For the record, I totally wrote that before Randy called him "Jason Mraz-y." Also, I am a genius!).
Allison Iraheta "Given to Me"
Allison needs a serious image overhaul, but I love her voice. She's got a great raw, natural talent, and with some work, I think she can definitely be another Kelly Clarkson type. The judges love her.
Anoop Desai "Beat It"
Okay, I'm going to admit right up front that the vocals were a mixed bag. There were some nice moments, but there were others where he got a little lost in the song. With that said, I love this guy. His attitude in the song was great, and he's just fun to watch. Can't you see him as an actor? I could definitely see him in a Judd Apatow-type comedy. The judges hated his performance though, so I'm pretty sad.
Jorge Nunez "Never Can Say Goodbye"
Jorge is a very talented singer, but this performance bores me to tears until the very end, in which it gets somewhat interesting. It's not a great song choice, and I'm underwhelmed. The judges pretty much agree with me on this one.
Megan Joy Corkrey "Rockin' Robin"
I get what she's trying to do here: kind of a cute rockabilly-type thing. It just comes off as corny. To be fair, the song improves tremendously after a horribly shaky start, but the "Caw! Caw!" at the end? That's a little Gob Bluth, but not in a good way.
Adam Lambert "Black Or White"
It's funny, because I can take neither this song nor Adam Lambert seriously in any way. I find him so off-putting. I cannot figure out why people are so drawn to him. Is it because of those damn sparkly vampires the kids are so into nowadays? Anyway, the entire performance is screechy, over-the-top musical theater. Paula nearly has a love stroke, though, so clearly she disagrees with me. Hell, even Simon liked it, so I guess I'm completely alone.
Matt Giraud "Human Nature"
He always looks like he's trying to dress like Justin Timberlake, so it's funny that this performance immediately reminded me of Justin Timberlake's impression of John Mayer on last week's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. However, as it went on, I like the performance more, and he hit some pretty impressive notes at the end.
Alexis Grace "Dirty Diana"
Poor Alexis Grace is the one who gets the unlucky "not number 13." Hopefully, it doesn't completely screw her, because her song choice is brilliant. This song is badass, and so is she. It's a sassy performance, and I really like it. She's IDOL 36, and Seacrest reminds you to "dial carefully."
I have a bad feeling that my beloved Anoop may not be long for this world, which makes me sad. However, if I had my druthers, it would be Jorge and Michael who would be going home on Wednesday. What about you? Who do you think is going to get eliminated?

I don't really care much for him either. Well, I guess since I'm not a "record producer" my hearing must not be right. I think he's way over the top and he screeches a lot.

When they said "Michael Jackson night" I knew it would be painful...I was right. I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't understand the Adam Lambert enthusiasm.
Lil Rounds "The Way You Make Me Feel"
She looks pretty good on stage, seems like a natural, but her voice is so-so...not nearly as good as the judges want you to think. Melinda Doolittle would absolutely dominate her in a one-on-one sing-off. SAFE
Scott MacIntyre "Keep the Faith"
Can we get over this guy now? To me, it's almost offensive how they continually tell him that his passion comes through...that's the kind of thing they say to athletes at the special olympics. The real critique is that he doesn't have a very good voice and he's only an okay piano player (compared to Matt? Please) who sings only the cheesiest sonts. SAFE (but shouldn't be)
Danny Gokey "P.Y.T."
I will agree that this was his best so far, it just wasn't anything I'd write home about. He's definitely the most overrated person other than Adam, and I still have no clue how he will sell records outside the Christian music world. SAFE (but hopefully not for too long)
Michael Sarver "You Are Not Alone"
He's got a decent voice, but he can't possibly stick around much longer, he's clearly out of his league now. SAFE (but shouldn't be)
Jasmine Murray "I'll Be There"
She's so forgettable, just another one of those young Diva-wannabes with a second-rate voice. I see her being voted off tonight. GONE
Kris Allen "Remember the Time"
I said Jason Mraz the second I saw him the first time, even without his guitar, and this performance solidified that prediction. He's very good, but Idol doesn't want him to win. He's got a great tone and feels like he could actually make records that would sell. I want him to keep making it. SAFE (but barely)
Allison Iraheta "Given to Me"
She's going to be singing Heart songs and songs that sound like Heart songs the whole time...because that's all she's shown us. She's talented and enjoyable, but she'll be gone in a few weeks. SAFE (but not for too long)
Anoop Desai "Beat It"
He was awful. Absolutely terrible, his personality got him this far (cause Ricky Braddy was a better singer in the WC round) but for some reason he's still popular and will be safe for a while. SAFE (though he should be gone)
Jorge Nunez "Never Can Say Goodbye"
He's decent, but incredibly forgettable now that the show has moved into competition mode and not "reality TV"...I can't imagine he's going to be in the top 10 if he keeps singing ballads like this. GONE
Megan Joy Corkrey "Rockin' Robin"
I enjoyed it, but maybe that's because she's the prettiest girl I've ever seen on Idol. I hope she loses before the top 10 so she'll appear in Playboy. It was fun to watch because it was cute and quirky and she's got a decent voice, but it's obvious that she's not a performer. SAFE (She's VFTW's choice
Adam Lambert "Black Or White"
Your review of this Poser is absolutely spot-on. I feel like he's an actor playing Steven Tyler in "Aerosmith: The Musical Play". The way the judges got on all fours for this guy was beyond me. I thought it was painful, just like all the others from this guy. SAFE (as long as Simon, Paula, Kara and Randy continue to annoint him as the Second Coming)
Matt Giraud "Human Nature"
He's talented, clearly that's true. Him and Kris are my favorite guys left, and they are more understated and just simply talented. With Matt in front of the piano it showed how amateur Scott was earlier. I thought his performance was vastly superior to Lambert's and along with Kris and Alexis, he was my favorite of the night. SAFE (but only for a few more weeks before he's in trouble)
Alexis Grace "Dirty Diana"
She is a serious singer. She's also gotten a lot sexier since tryouts. I really like her and hope she's around for a long time. I don't get why they told her "it's not as good as you think it is", but told Adam that he was the greatest singer they've ever seen when his performance was far more indulgent. SAFE

I dont know but wow did I disagree with you totally on this!!!!! Adam is a great performer and has a great voice. Annoop is not that good. I like jorge's voice alot but American Idol --I dont think so. Anyone who came in on the wild card last week should be the first to go- The top 4 are Danny Adam Allison( who is WONDERFUL) and Lil. Next 2- Alexis, Scott. Matt/Kris may knock one of these out if they can keep up with them
I feel Allison is a very current singer and at 16 can really go far.

I've never liked Michael Jackson, so this show didn't do much for me. That said, my top three were the last three: Adam, Matt and Alexis. My bottom three were Megan, Anoop and Jasmine.
Other comments:
* Lil definitely underachieved last night.
* I don't know why, but Michael's performance struck me as gospel. (Maybe he can go on tour with Joel Osteen?)
* Kris reminded me of John Mayer more so than Jason Mraz (and that is not a compliment).
* This might sound contradictory because I was not familiar with the song Allison sang, but I thought she "made it her own" more than anybody else did.
Kara is suffering between Randy and Paula; her comments are becoming more meaningless every week.

I totally agree about Adam he just seems like someone's bad impression of a rock star. He has stage savvy from musical theater and so that is an advantage but I do not get all the judge love for him. I think his whole persona is so manufactured.
Lil was good (not great) but I had to agree with Simon on the outfit - she looked great in a dress last week.
in general I thought they did pretty well but make Megan go home, she should not be there as she is not in the league with the others. She would not be there if she were ordinary looking.

I'm a starving artist, but I'll happily skip a few meals to buy Adam's future CD(s). He's definitely more satisfying than the four major food groups!
Love, love listening to him. After the other performances tonight, though, I'm ready to boot at least four of the top twelve. That way, Idol will have a really short season, and Adam can get right into the studio!

That's exactly what I'm thinking. The minute I read about the telephone number snafu I was wondering how the show would deal with the possibility that the thirteenth person could get screwed simply because of that. I think you're right. Based on Simon's snotty response to Ryan something tell me the judges will overrule the viewers if they see fit.

I was wondering about that myself too. I didn't hear them say that they were getting rid of two tonight? Maybe they will get rid of the lowest vote getter as well as one of the judges choice?

My guess: The bottom three or four will have to sing for their lives...much like SYTYCD has them dance for theirs...then the judges make the decision. I kind of like it - it ensures the "Daughtry's" of the competition a fair chance...ya know?

I'm not on the Adam train either. I don't think he's bad, but his voice and screeching really irritate me for some reason. I must be allergic. He's definitely a little overhyped.
I've warmed up to the Top 13 after this showing. I think they're still surprising, which is good, and if you think about it, no one had a truly awful performance. Almost all of them were at least in tune and no outright disasters. I've already been listening to a few of the performances over again this morning.
I think it's a very strong start to the finals, let's hope the nerves don't get to them, because it was really entertaining show.
This time last year, Archuleta had forgotten his words and we had Kristy Lee Cook's awful country-Beatles.

What's with the hate for Kristy Lee Cook today? I still think her Beatles week performance was sabotaged by the band and the arrangement. And Michelle's comparison of Kristy Lee and Sanjaya (below) is out of line.
I'd take Kristy Lee over Megan any day of the week!
