Desperate Housewives: Crime Doesn't Pay

Desperate Housewives
(S05E16) "He believed in punishing those who weren't [polite]." - Mary Alice about Orson

After almost a month off, Desperate Housewives is back to continue the storylines that started to take shape before the hiatus: Mike moving in with Katherine, Tom and Lynette selling the restaurant, Orson starting to steal small objects, Gaby and Brad blackmailing one another, Edie trying to learn more about her husband.

Let's say it upfront, this was not the best DH episode to date. It was what we call a "filler" episode in which nothing huge happens. Okay, that final scene was a killer and what the priest said to Edie helped pushed things along Dave-wise but besides those two events, the episode was not that much interesting, including the Lynette and Tom face-off.

Before I get to what interested me in the episode, let's tackle the various relationships.

Bree/Orson

I used to love Bree and Orson. They were such a twisted pair that fit so well together. Now, they don't make sense as a couple at all. Since the season started, they have been at odds, and Orson acting out almost every week makes me want to reach in my TV screen and shake some sense into him. Yes, I can understand that he feels people are not there to support him, etc., etc. But stealing? Hello!?! Not only are his reactions childish, but they can send him back to jail again. If Bree was able to convince him to turn himself in once, I'm pretty sure she can do it again, even if this time the crime is not as bad. However, I would prefer that the DH Powers That Be -- aka Marc Cherry -- finds a way to have Bree and Orson back to what they used to be and have Bree keep her business.

Lynette/Tom

It amazes me how much that couple loves one another. It's rare on TV that you see such couples, so DH must keep Lynette and Tom together. However, we could have done without the face off in front of Bruce. I get that the writers wanted something funny to happen at dinner, but Lynette and Tom are better as a team, and seeing them fight one another by saying nasty things about the other did not work, at least not for me. The lowest point was definitely having Tom say that Lynette's cancer could come back! WTF? OMG! I would have prefer having them go in the kitchen and decide to both try to get hired by Bruce as a team instead of having Tom get pissed off and go back in the dining room ready for battle. Luckily, the Scavos love each other so much that they patch things up and agree that Lynette should go back to work. Although I wonder why Tom can't go back to work, too. Aren't all the Scavo kids in school? Penny must be in kindergarten, no?

Susan/Mike/Katherine

Once again, the writers wanted me to find a magical way to get my hands in the TV screen and shake one of the characters. Susan needs to must grow up NOW. It's getting tired after four and a half seasons to have her react before thinking. If only Julie had been there, she could have told her mother asap that Katherine removed the picture because it was depicting Mike and Susan's honeymoon. I'm sure if the painting had been of a random beach Susan painted that Katherine would have kept it. If Jackson brought a painting to Susan's to hang up, and Susan would have found out it was painted by Jackson's ex and depicted a nice moment they had together, Susan would not only have put the painting in the basement, she would have destroyed it. At least Susan did the right thing in the end. But I'm not sure hanging the painting in her own house is a good idea, since it'll remind her of what she had with Mike and will prevent her from really moving on.

Now that the relationships are out of the way, let's get down to business: Brad's death and Edie learning about Dave's real last name.

I wonder what will follow Brad's death. For sure Maria's lawyer will plead temporary insanity and will probably do some time in jail. But what will happen to the Solises who knew about it all? Will we see them testify during the trial if there is one on the show? Did Brad have the time to notify his boss that Carlos was fired? If not, will Carlos decide to keep his job even if he doesn't like it that much? My guess is that the latter will happen since it gives a purpose to Brad's death in the show's scheme. What do you think?

Edie wasn't able to gather much information from the priest but the piece of information she got will get her very close to the truth. Edie is a bright woman and I'm sure that, after reading the results of her online search, she'll connect the dots between Dave and the accident involving Mike and Susan. She will probably also see why Dave wanted to buy the house to have Mike rent it under a different light. Edie getting closer to the truth and asking Dave about it can only lead to very bad things...
