This episode went along pretty much as I expected, with most of the people I expected getting through to the top 12. Until the wild card round, that is, when the kids and I were screaming at the TV because of the judges' dismal ineptitude at picking people to come back! But first, let's see what happened up to that point. That's my version of "After the break..."
The show started with the group singing Katy Perry's "Hot and Cold," which was one of my favorite songs until I heard them sing it. But even with the awkward dance moves, they seemed to be having fun, especially Nate, so that's what matters, I guess.
I thought most of them did a good job last night, but I was really blown away by Lil Rounds. Really, just give her the Idol crown right now. I can't imagine that she won't go far in the competition, though she reminds me of LaToya London from a few seasons ago, and she didn't get as far as I had hoped. So we'll see what happens with Lil.
And Lil is first up, so I don't have to wait long to learn she's going through to the top 12. I would have fallen off my chair if she didn't make it. Kara said she expects to hear "just ridiculous vocals" from her every week. The pressure is on!
Arianna Afsar, Alex Wagner-Trugman, Taylor Vaifanua, Kendall Beard, and Scott Macintyre are up next. Only one of them is going through, and I guess right off the bat it'll be Scott. Sure enough, Scott's the man, and the one going through to the top 12. He gets a standing ovation and says he'll never take the competition for granted. Randy says he can't wait to see him play the piano and "blow up the stage every time, Dawg."
Nathaniel Marshall and Kristen McNamara, and then Von Smith and Felicia Barton are up next. With both pairs, Ryan says that after the nationwide vote, "It's a no right now." Hmmm, "right now"...?
Ju'Not Joyner and Jorge Nunez are up next, and this is a tough one, because both of them were really great singers. If I was queen of the world, I probably would have put Ju'Not through, because I think he's the better singer out of the two. But I think America got hooked on Jorge's emotional backstory and voted him through.
Next, the Wild Card Round officially begins. Simon explains that the judges have chosen eight people they want to come back and sing again tomorrow night. Also that Clay Aiken and Jennifer Hudson were both Wild Card Round winners, so anything can happen.
Each of the judges announces the various winners of the Wild Card Round. When all is said and done, the people coming back are: Von Smith, Jasmine Murray, Ricky Braddy, Megan Joy Corkrey, Matt Giraud, Jesse Langseth, Anoop Desai, and ... Tatiana Del Toro...? What?!!!! This is the part where the kids and I were screaming at the TV, "Noooooooooo!!!" I mean, she has an ok voice, but really, judges?! Really?!! What about my man, Ju'Not? He surely deserved it more than Crying Girl!!!
Argh, that's all I've got to say about tonight's episode, because I've run out of exclamation marks. So there are still three slots open ...

I agree, I wanted Ju'not back with his smooth R&B vibe. I even prefer him more than Lil at this point, because when they get into the real world, I would probably buy Ju'not than Lil, but we will see; I am still waiting for Lil to truly overwhelm me.
I am emotionally attached to Anoop, so I was no more happier than when they announced him. At last.
I am actually glad they got Jesse to come back, she has an amazing and different tone to her voice; and Matt, since I think he can knock it out of the park if he chooses wisely. Honestly, I don't remember Megan, and I wish neither Jasmine nor Von were back. Ricky, don't know you, but goodluck. I would have traded any of these last few to have Jamar back. As for Tatiana, the other seven wild cards need only sing their butts off and over "The Drama," and if they cannot, they deserve to lose, and we... deserve to be punished by seeing her for more weeks....

I was screaming at my tv too, but I began earlier than you when they announced that Von Smith was a wild card pick. Really? I'd rather have my eardrums pierced by red hot metal skewers than listen to him sing one more song. Ever.
But I really had a fit when Tatiana's name was called. True, she can sing, but she also brings the wrong type of crazy to the show. I don't find her antics entertaining, I find them worrysome, as in bring on the straitjacket crazy. Seriously, I worry that if she doesn't make it this time around, she'll either take her life of somebody else's.
If Idol wanted a controversial singer back, they should have picked Norman Gentile/Nick Mitchell instead. Underneath the sparkly shirt and Sybil-like demeanor, he could really sing, and brought a huge dose of comedy to the show, which I found refreshing. I would have loved to have seen him sing even once as Nick Mitchell so I could have seen what he was truly capable of.

So many thoughts ... where to begin?
First of all, Felicia got screwed. Her performance on Tuesday should have put her through to the finals -- especially in light of how she was brought back, which pretty much eliminated her from wildcard contention. (She knew it too -- you could see it all over her face.)
On a related note, when Ju'Not didn't make it, I figured he was a lock for a wildcard. Sadly, the spots all went to singers from the first two rounds. Sorry, Ju'Not! Simon would probably console him by saying he doesn't have a shot to win it, but using that logic, does Jorge? Or Michael? Or Jesse? (Really, Jesse was a last-minute change? Why?)
Without hearing them sing, my only lock for tonight is Matt. (Assuming he picks a good song!) I'd like to think Anoop will make it, and Ricky is probably the best pure singer in the group, but I think there is a shortage of women in the final, so my other two picks are Jasmine and -- much as I hate to say it -- Tatiana.

Sorry, I made another mistake. Von sang in the third round and got a wildcard. (Edit function, please?)

Jimmy, my bud.... *shakes head* Tatiana? Jay Black helps us all.
Actually, I think you're right -- since the judges seem to be picking who gets through tonight, Tatiana is almost a lock because even though I think she doesn't sing very well and has an awful "image", the producers love her drama queenness, and want her in for the "buzz" factor.

Ah, yes, let's bring crazy Tatiana back so we can see her break down, again, when she doesn't advance. I'd feel sorry for her if she wasn't such a delusional famewhore.
The blind guy seems like a sweetie, but doesn't have the chops for the top 12. This is becoming The Surreal Life AI
Very glad about Anoop, though.

Except for Anoop, I think every guy they picked for the wildcard was the same guy. I have no idea who they are and they all looked the same to me.
I would put JuKnot in there.
And I think the girl they brought back (from Virginia Beach) deserved a shot in the wild card as well.
Some of the people on the stage waiting to be called for Wild Card looked PISSED OFF.
I've enjoyed AI so far (for the most part) but I am definately ready to move on to the top singers.

I was ticked when JuNot wasn't picked.
Like Karen said above me, I could not differentiate between the bland white guys they picked, except for Vonn Smith who, as brooke wrote above, I'd rather stab my out than listen to or watch. (I did, however, laugh out loud when Simon started muttering, "wear a hat" during Paula's "here's what you need to do to get better, sweetie" speech. Seriously funny stuff.)
I was happily surprised they picked Jesse to bring back. I liked her voice. I'm also glad Jasmine got a chance to get into the top 12.
Finally, I was really happy Anoop got back in. He has.. image problems ... and until he fixes them, I think he has no shot to win any phone votes. So this works out well for him, because the judges seem to be the ones picking who will survive tonight, and they're clearly going to be voting Anoop through (because the "dawg" can sing). Once he's in the Top 12, he gets another shot to remake his image and try and win America's votes. (He won't, I know, but hey, give the guy a shot, imho.)

I think the judges already know who they are going to put in the top 12 -- I would guess that Anoop and Matt are locks, don't know about the third one -- and how the contestants perform in the wild card round won't make any difference. That's why they put in Tatiana. I mean, really. There's ZERO chance that she will actually be selected by the judges. The producers of the show know that everyone will be watching to see her singing and her reaction when she's stiffed.

Dont forget about the "Kissing other dudes on camera" dude...they love him too. And finally, the big booty dudette.
That being said, why did they put Von in the WC Round? I understand Tatiana because the Producers know she means ratings, but Von? He sucked, was clearly not popular and there were a couple better singers who didn't go. I think Felecia Barton got the shaft, she was talented, but Dead Wife Dude's friend was the biggest shaft of all...he was better than most of the guys.

Those wildcard picks were ridiculous. Out of ALL the group 3 talent, you bring back Shouty McShouterson?
It sucks that Mishavonna wasn't even in the running, but not unexpected since the judges ripped her performance for seemingly no reason (sang a song from a band? sings songs that are too serious?)
Tatiana was a waste a of wildcard slot. She was good in her group, but the female talent in Group 2 were much stronger (Kristen, Felicia, even Kendall)
I feel the same way with Jasmine. I don't mind if you select a wildcard because they chose the wrong song, but not when you overlook singers that chose the RIGHT song and sang it well, and just happened not to be pimped enough to make it through..

Guys, don't worry about Tatiana. There's no chance in hell (haha knock on wood) that she would be the three that the judges choose.
They love Anoop. So he's a lock. And I'm thinking another guy will make it in (probably Ricky Braddy). So now there's three others girls to choose from that's not named Tatiana and I have hope that they would pick Jasmine.

I will take bets that Tatiana makes it to the final 12!
There are only three girls in the finals so far, so *at least* two will advance. Antics aside, she is a better singer than the other girls in the wildcard -- not to mention the fact that she will draw viewers AND sell concert tickets.

Ug. Please no. I can't watch her at all. Her antics physically hurt me.
This is the first season of American Idol I have watched, and it is for the "blind dude" -- YEAH!

While I disagree with Jimmy that Tatiana is a good singer, I agree with him when he offers to take bets that she will make the Top 12. The producers want her in for the "buzz" factor of having such an over the top drama queen on the show.

David: I didn't say Tatiana is a *good* singer. I said she's better than the other girls in the wildcard, and that's not saying much.
Alas, Felicia is better than all of them.

The competition this year is aw-ful.Face it,who wants to tell a blind guy he's just OK but not good enough for a record contract? He's getting the pity vote. Did anyone think he was NOT going on further last night? NO! Granted some of them are GOOD,but no one has stepped it up,we'll see.

Do we actually know that these are the only 8 in the Wild Card? It seems like it'd make more sense to pick 4 from each of the three rounds, make it 12, and the Judges just wanted a chance to talk about the current round after seeing who was through. It wouldn't surprise me to see them bring back four more at the start of tonight's show, and I'd be shocked if Ju'Not isn't one of them.
Doesn't make sense for this not to be true, since group 3 didn't seem particularly weaker than the first two. Why wouldn't they play by the same rules?
I am surprised, if I'm right, that Ryan didn't tell us this, though.
