Ricky Gervais won't be hosting the Oscars tonight, but he'll be doing the next best thing. It looks like Gervais will be writing some of the jokes to be used by host Hugh Jackman and company. If so, then I draw a few conclusions from this:Tonight's jokes will be swipes at Hollywood and probably the entertainment industry in general. As one can tell from The Office and Extras (and even the BBC article itself), Gervais excels at self-deprecating humor. They will be nasty, but nasty in a funny and cute way that industry insiders and the audience will enjoy. He could even recycle jokes from Extras.
Also, tonight's jokes will be extremely funny if Jackman can deliver them in a Gervais-like style. Hopefully he'll practice them beforehand. I wonder if Stephen Merchant was involved with the joke-writing as well?
If this works out, perhaps he'll accept that offer to host the event next year? Fingers crossed.

I've been a lazy viewer at best of the Oscars for several years now. While I'm not one of those people who thinks the Oscars should only celebrate the blockbusters I can't help but feel the Oscars are even more out of touch this year. Few people have seen any of the Best Picture nominees and several of the acting nominees are relative unknowns, so who really cares? As for Hugh Jackman, this sounds like a career-destroying disaster waiting to happen.

Let me tell you at first, that I haven't seen an Oscar broadcast in maybe 5-6 years, mainly because they start at 3 AM where I live & I have to work Monday morning; another reason would be, that I don't really care that much about awards ceremonies in general.
With all that said, I simply don't understand your kind of reasoning. What do you mean, when you write '...the Oscars are even more out of touch...' as if the Academy is to blame for the ignorance of the average moviegoer?!
Doesn't the fact that many people haven't seen/don't know the nominated movies/people say more about the average Joe/Jane Moviegoer, than it does about the choice of nominations?
There are always a few exceptions, like in every year, but most of the movies/people who are nominated this year deserve it. They were the best few in their respective categories this year. And if 'Average Joe/Jane Moviegoer' doesn't know them, I say: SCREW HIM/HER! It's not a frakin' popularity contest; they have the People's Choice Awards for that. This anti-elitism has become unhealthy!
And for what it's worth, I couldn't care less, if they broadcast the Awards ceremony next year or make it a private industry-people only event instead...

If Kate Winslet wins an Oscar, she should thank Ricky Gervais for her win. He essentially wrote her career path in that Extras episode.
