I don't think this is going to happen (not permanently anyway), but Zap2It thinks that it's possible that Michael Scott could be leaving Dunder-Mifflin.We haven't heard any rumors that Steve Carell is leaving the show, but we do know that Michael Scott is going to become increasingly upset with his corporate bosses at Dunder-Mifflin. He thinks he deserves crazy Jan's old job, but that job is going to former The Wire star Idris Elba. He has signed for six episodes (so far) and just might be the new guy in charge in Scranton. When this happens, Michael actually leaves, and another character leaves with him.
In a way, I'm just as interested in who leaves with Michael as I am the reasons why Michael himself leaves.
I don't think Carell will leave. This sounds like it will be a major story arc on the show, and maybe we'll even see Michael leave and get another job somewhere, but we'll see him at that job too (other companies seem to be very open to the documentary team filming at their place), similar to the way we saw Pam in New York City for several episodes. But he'll be back, perhaps after a season-ending cliffhanger or something. There are a lot of great characters on the show, but the show really does revolve around Michael.
But if Carell does leave, would you still watch the show?

Carell recently signed a contract extension, so his leaving shouldn't even be in the discussion

I've never been a fan of Michael Scott. He used to be kind of a dirtbag in the beginning, but now he's just a buffoon.
I stopped watching the episodes "Survivor Man" and "Dunder-Mifflin Infinity" last season because Michael went completely over the top. How stupid are you when you drive into a lake because your GPS tells you to even when you see the lake in front of you? Michael Scott is always the one to push The Office to insanity and it just doesn't work. I want a satire, not a farce.

Sadly many people have driven into lakes or rivers because their GPS told them.

This is absolutely true. I have heard multiple stories in the news of people not looking where they were going and almost going off cliffs, into lakes, etc.

Yeah there was a lot of complaining about this one, but it totally has happened many times.

Getting rid of Carrell would actually make me want to watch the show, rather than surfing on my computer waiting for 30 Rock to come on while the wife watches The Office.

The headline was forced. "That's what she said" opportunities should flow naturally, not be planned.

Ever since Michael has been prospering off Scranton being the highest selling branch, I've had a feeling something would go wrong and he would leave/get fired. But he will be back probably after a short story arch.

David Brent was sacked as the manager of Wernham-Hogg Slough branch in the UK version of The Office and Ricky Gervais stayed on the show. Michael Scott no longer being the manager of the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin would not mean that he would have to leave the show.

Are these actual spoilers? If so, maybe it shouldn't be out on the front page without so much as a warning.

i don't think the question is "Is Michael Scott leaving" but more "Would you watch if he left".
I wouldn't - he's an ass, and that's why I watch.
He's a buffoon and that's why I watch.
I have to pause my DVR because of how uncomfortable Michael makes me - but that's why I watch.
and yet, he's not a bad guy on purpose - except if you're Toby and he inexplicably hates your guts. Did I miss something between these two early on....but I digress...
I love the entire Office staff, but to me, it truly does revolve around Michael Scott.

im pretty sure most of michael's hatred towards Toby comes from the fact that toby is HR son naturally hes Michael's mortal enemy because most of the things Michael does is totally against any HR policies of any company. Remember he was totally ready to despise Holly just because she was gonna be the new HR when Toby left. The only reason he didnt hate Holly was because he thought she was hot and she was goofy like him.

I would definitely watch the show without him. But I don't think that he's going to leave permantently. I think he's going to be fired or demoted and next year will be about him clawing his way back to the top. It'll be great.

i think the webisodes are absolutely hilarious, and none of them feature Steve Carell. the show is funny in its own right.
Idris Elba is hot.

How is this even debatable? Of course the show wouldn't work without Michael Scott, he's the main freaking character!!! Not that the show is all that watchable right now, but still, it has always, and will always revolve around Michael, Jim, Pam, and to a lesser extent Dwight. Though I can see Stringer firing Michael, there is no doubt that he will continue to be the main character of the show.

The Office is my absolute favorite show ever, and if Michael Scott does leave, i'll still watch the show, but after reading some of these comments it made sense that they might take this to the end of the season and make it a cliff hanger.
