Seeing Brian Williams sitting next to Matt Lauer on Today was a bit disconcerting, wasn't it? I knew NBC was having some budget problems, but I didn't realize how thin of a bench they actually had. Williams subbed in for Meredith Vieira, but only stayed on the show for an hour, as I'd imagine he'd rather spend the 8:00 hour putting together tonight's Nightly News lineup than talk about ten ways to keep your car running or what Drew Peterson ate for breakfast.Anyway, Williams was at times a bit too stuffy for the morning gig, but his famous sense of humor showed through a number of times, including the clips after the jump. The first one is a clip reel of some strangely homoerotic interplay between Williams and Lauer, which Al Roker called "a Whitman's Sampler of man candy." The second one is of Lauer, Williams, and Natalie Morales making their Oscar picks.

As funny as Williams is, his anchor-y style doesn't quite translate to the morning, does it? Makes me wonder how Tom Brokaw was able to do it all those years; he makes Williams look like Krusty the Clown in comparison.
What did you think of Williams' performance this morning? Let me know in the comments.

A "Whitman's Sampler of Man Candy" - I can decide if this is comedic genius or just really really uncomfortable.

I was excited for a moment thinking the girl from The Middleman was on the Today show. Yet I was wrong.

Brian Williams is a very cool cat. That dry sense of humor -- "Slumdog Squarepants?" Funny. Loved Al Roker's jab -- Whitman's Sampler of Man Candy. Those TODAY show people are a witty crew -- sometimes.

I've never been able to stomach the Today show crew - they always seem so pretentious and seem so fake. None of the other network morning shows are much better in that regard, but Today is the worst.
The "man candy" joke might be funny out of context, but coming from anyone in that crew makes me cringe.
