A lot of the Jimmy Fallon haters out there have been ripping his chances before the man has even had a chance to make a footprint on NBC's late night lineup.
It's a little unfair. Sure, he's had a checkered path of success post-Saturday Night Live, but Conan O'Brien wasn't even a gleam in the public's cornea when he took over for Letterman and everyone was writing his obituary before the show reached the third trimester.
After watching this video blog on his Late Night with Jimmy Fallon site, it's clear that man is, if anything, committed to proving his naysayers wrong by letting a virtual strangler mutilate his eyeballs.
Fallon went under the knife in preparation for his new Late Night show. No, he didn't have a funny gland installed. If he did, I would have one done by now. Sure it would be expensive, but technically it would also be a tax deduction.
He had LASIK eye surgery to improve his natural eyesight and he recorded the whole procedure for his video blog. And yes, I mean EVERYTHING. Watch it with someone you hate while they are eating peeled grapes.
Fallon said on his recent traditional "changing of the guard" visit to O'Brien's show that he had the surgery so he could read his cue cards better without his glasses. Granted, he didn't undergo some kind of risky surgery that could have killed him or put a third arm growing out of his head if things went wrong. But it shows he's committed to make the show work on a stylish and aesthetic level. Let someone stick a knife in your eyeballs to improve your job and see what happens.

I'm more than prepared to give him a chance, I like what they're trying to do with technology and the web and hopefully they'll be able to combine the two in a way that retains the high(er) production values of a true tv show with the flexibility of the web without it just seeming like a gimmick that they're doing because they think they should. If they can use twitter (for example) in a way that maybe links one show to the next giving a sense of community and continuity it could be really interesting, having guests via webcam and maybe even having technology related guests (the diggnation guys) could be good. I think they're doing an awful lot right, and the show will take time to find what works, I just hope Fallon can become a half decent host.

I've never particularly liked Fallon and couldn't stand him on SNL. Having said that, he's been doing a lot "behind the scenes" to gain viewers for his Late Night gig. I enjoyed seeing him on Diggnation a few weeks ago and realized that maybe he's just never been given a fair chance and deserves one. So I wish him luck with the new show and will be tuning in to see how he does and hoping for the best.

Lord knows Conan deserved a chance despite his first few episodes.
