(S02E15) Well, it was a big episode that we almost missed due to the Presidential address tonight. This was a great episode for one simple reason: we finally find out that Leonard and Sheldon are friends because Leonard is trying to have sex with his mother. Wait -- that's not quite right. But seriously. How great is it that Leonard's mother and Sheldon are basically the exact same person?
I like the direction they took with it: They didn't go the predictable route of Leonard feeling as though Sheldon is replacing him; they hinted at a Mrs. Robinson relationship, but didn't quite go there. Instead, the writers made their reactions believable. Sheldon and Mrs. Hofstadter spent a great deal of time talking about brain scans and played Rock Band, which as we all know, is the great equalizer.Christine Baranski was great as Leonard's mother. Her coldness and exacting standards do a good job of explaining both why Leonard can put up with Sheldon so well and why Leonard is basically a puppy in search of love. Unfortunately, his mother's emotional stunting is keeping him from ever getting said love, as we see with Penny.
I've mentioned before how I love that they're really easing back into the Leonard/Penny relationship. Ever since the Christmas episode, they've been tentatively and naturally getting closer to each other. Tonight, they found the missing ingredient: tequila.
Poor Penny. She overlooks so much in order to have just a friendship with any of these guys. She even starts to overlook Leonard's creepy pillow talk, but when he says that she's just trying to have sex with her dad, well, I don't think anyone can blame her for kicking him out. There's only so much you can pretend not to hear, you know?
In any case, I don't think it's over for Penny and Leonard. I'm sure that this will set them back quite a bit, but Penny's not the type to completely get rid of him over the fact that he said something stupid. Something really, really, profoundly stupid. Things will probably be cool between them for the next several episodes, but I have a feeling that when it's time for sweeps, they'll heat up yet again.
Some of my favorite lines from this episode:
Penny: "What was Leonard like when he was little?"
Mrs. Hofstadter: "Oh, I think you mean 'young;' he's always been little."
"At that age, he was well enmeshed in what Freud would call the Phallic Stage of psycho-sexual development; an outmoded theory, of course, but the boy did spend most of his waking hours with a tight grasp on his penis." - Mrs. Hofstadter
"If you want to have intercourse with that girl, find out what kind of cologne her father wore." - Mrs. Hofstadter
Leonard: "She's only been here a day and a half, and I'm seriously considering alcoholism as a new career path."
Penny: "Hey, I talked to her for five minutes yesterday, and I've been half bombed ever since."
"You shush! I'm happy. I want to talk about it." - Leonard

I really loved this episode. They get so much mileage from the similarities and especially differences between Leonard and Sheldon... creating a character that heightens our awareness of their relationship was fantastic.
And meanwhile, I find it delightful the way Penny goes for Leonard only at believable times, and yet can't quite let herself have feelings for him. Let's face it, we've seen Sam-Dianne, David-Maddie, Rachel-Ross will-they-won't-they smoldering chemistry that comes and goes for so many years. It's great that Big Bang Theory has a fresh take on that dynamic.
Please, someone from this show, ask me for a writing sample. I love your comedy, and I speak nerd.

The episode was nice - problem is I didn't laugh too much. Maybe you could call it a plot-advancing episode or whatever...
I mean I'm kind of pissed that Lennard blew it saying that they just have sex because they weren't loved by their parents. Ok Penny said that they would therefor basically try to sleep with their parents but if you look at it correctly, Lennard IS LIVING WITH THE MALE VERSION OF HIS MOTHER.
THAT is weird. And he made fun of his two friends at lunch for spending time together as if they were a couple while he's basically trying to get the love he never got from his mother from A GUY.
So then he gets it on with somebody who's absolutely NOT his mother and, intelligent as he is, he twists that into the both of them to get loved by their parents? Hello?
Sorry, for him to get so drunk to say THAT is just... bwah.
The episode wasn't funny enough to warrant all these out of character actions or disregard the implications. Brrrr.
Why can't all sitcoms be both intelligent AND in-character? Ah well, this show was always like that and I chuckled here and there, I guess it's not a good idea to demand more from Chuck Lorre. This way more people laugh about it and not everybody is as nitpicky as I am :-)

Odd, this was the most I've laughed at any of the three or four sitcoms I watch all season. I mean, I was howling to disturb the neighbors. The writing was whip-smart, and I didn't feel the characterization was off.
Loved seeing Raj and Howard play the ersatz homosexual marriage, and the Jar Jar Binks-speak mocking. And Leonard only made fun of his friends in retaliation to Howard's incessant digs. Sort of a "shoe is on the other foot now" thing.
As to Leonard and Penny seeking affection they never received from their parents, they are not actually looking for sexual partners that are exactly like their parents. They just crave that missed love from the people they do date. I seriously doubt any of Penny's douchebag boyfriends resemble her father in any way. I don't know how you got Leonard wanting to sleep with Sheldon from that.

Raj and Howard was the best bit of the whole show. I think I didn't "buy" Leonard's mother because I saw her on "Cybill" before and her need to categorize every person and analyze them annoyed me so much... I love it in Sheldon but with her... I don't know. It simply annoyed me but like I said that's Chuck Lorre, he knows what works and if you buy it it's brilliant :-)
I mean look at me I over-analyze things myself and don't have fun because of that :-)

And about the Leonard/Sheldon thing:
I mean look at the guy - he's living with the male version of his mother. So if Penny and him getting together was just because of seeking affection they didn't get from their parents then what does that mean for him and Sheldon? Does he live with Sheldon to get the approval he didn't get from his mother? Or even more than that does he seek the affection he didn't get from his mother by living with a guy who's just like her, and, as a peer, maybe change the guy so that he loves him more than his mother did.
I mean Leonard said "My mother would say this is me seeking for the love of my mother and you of your father" but at the same moment he must think about him and Sheldon all the time. I mean honestly he has half of his brain in his pants and comes up with that how long do you think it would take them to figure out his situation with Sheldon when he sees his mother and Sheldon sing?
What I'm trying to say is this: the writers only had him say that to get him out of Penny's bed and that sucked because if he had these thoughts he would also be totally grossed out by him living with Sheldon resulting in him moving out of there. But that can't happen so it isn't mentioned, although the logical conclusion if you think about it.

For Ryan: If this was the most you laughed this season, obviously you didn't see last week's 30 Rock. Talk about whip-smart writing!

You say Leonard is living with the male version of his mother, but it really just explains why Leonard can tolerate a room-mate like Sheldon.

StillBash, I also remember (and loved) Baranski from Cybill, but she's a good enough actress that it doesn't color her other roles for me, like Keanu Reeves.
I can follow your logic, but your conclusion requires the supposition that the only reason Leonard is roommates with Sheldon is that the latter is an exact replica of his mother, hence the subconscious desire to sleep with him. I feel that that's too broad a leap to make, until we see a flashback to their decision to become roommates.
And as far as the writers reaching for Leonard's line to cause Penny to throw him out, that's probably one of the most well-known (and hence, probably misinterpreted) psychological theories to the lay person. Leonard may never have even thought about it enough to recognize a possible significance to his and Sheldon's relationship.
Jimmy, actually I've seen every episode of 30 Rock as it aired, but I've never laughed through an entire episode. I've found Tina Fey's writing to be hit or miss since she was head writer on SNL. Scrubs usually tops my comedy list, now that Arrested Development is gone, but this was a killer BBT.

My cable went out halfway through the show, and oddly, I was not disappointed. I've always liked Christine Baranski, but I didn't like her in this role.
Then again, I was watching after the the train wreck Obama press conference; it was hard to shift gears that suddenly. Maybe I will like it better when it reruns.

I didn't get to see it, because of the Pres's speech, and I am upset. I wanted to see this one, badly. Oh well, reruns. Oh, and Obama's train wreck, Jimmy? Shame on you. And maybe Leonard lives with Sheldon because that is what he is used to. He accepts Sheldon as the norm because he grew up with it.

Maybe Leonard doesn't live with Sheldon because he wants to get close to his mother, maybe because he has lived with his mother, and the type of person she is then he is the only roommate who could put up with Sheldon's quirks and not get mad or take them personal?????? Stillbash - you are way too analyzing while watching this fantastic comedy - you should just relax and listen and laugh and enjoy (which is what a comedy is for) than playing brain analyzer and finding problems with it. I ABSOLUTELY loved this episode, love Christine Baranski in any role and she was perfect in this one. I practically fell on the floor laughing during the lunch room scene. It was, and is, a wonderfully funny show - bring more on!!!!!!!

Analyzing it is fun. It's not like I'm totally pissed or something but the oedipus/transferral idea - well it was so basic I simply want to slap Leonard around for it ;-)
I mean it's a nice idea that he lives with Sheldon because he knows how to handle such a person and that it's too much of a leap but Freud has never been proven and the oedipus thought is just as far fetched as me thinking about why he lives with someone who resembles his mother so much.
What I'm trying to say is this: if he thinks he needs to mention the one thought to Penny he just as easily would come to my other conclusion concerning Sheldon (especially when he sees them both sing).
So I think he shouldn't have said nothing to Penny either because that one's just as far fetched as the my thought.

Thoroughly enjoyable episode. If they got rid of the last minute and a half with the Rock Band thing, it would have been better. I thought that was a cheesey way to end the episode.
Other than that, it's definitely on par with the other ep's this season, in my opinion...

But that's the whole point. A lesser show would have ended with Leonard and Mrs. Hofstadter having sex, but it was established almost immediately in the episode that she only has sex for the purposes of procreation. As for Leonard, when has he ever shown any interest in intercourse, for recreation or procreation? So for them sex wouldn't be an adventure or a thrill. On the other hand Rock Band, as she admits, is something that she'd never allow herself to do on her own or with her husband. For her it's an adventure - forbidden fruit - and for Leonard, well persuading her to do a duet with him is probably about as close to seduction as we're ever likely to see him get. If the root of Sheldon and Penny nearly having sex was about getting their parents' affection, then Leonard and Ms. Hofstadter singing was seduction and forbidden fruit.

Brent,
Please tell me you got Leonard & Sheldon mixed up. 'Cuz Leonard having sex with Mrs. Hofstadter would be beyond creepy.
