American Idol was in Salt Lake City tonight, home of David Archuleta and The Osmond Brothers (more on that later). It's definitely one of the happier places the judges have been, and even (most of) the contestants who bombed out were amazingly polite and good-natured. Still, with a huge crowd of adoring fans flocking around Simon Cowell as he entered the building, you've gotta wonder what's going on out there in Salt Lake City.
Anyway, let's get to it ...
David Osmond, 28, "Something Within Me"
This cutie is the son of Alan Osmond, the oldest member of the performing Osmonds. Alan had to quit the business because of his multiple sclerosis, and he's utterly emotional as he says how proud he is of David, who also has MS. While David was in a wheelchair for a while, he's on his feet now and says the disease has ups and downs. But being a member of the famous clan doesn't stop the judges from critiquing him. Kara doesn't like his runs, and Paula wishes he would have picked a song from a solo artist instead of a group. Still, David gets that Golden Ticket to Hollywood.
Tara Matthews, 21, "One Day I'll Fly Away"
This chubby girl dresses (and looks) like a drag queen and claims to be psychic. You just know there's no way she's moving forward. Not surprisingly, she chooses a song from the Moulin Rouge soundtrack, and Simon pronounces the whole thing "horrendous." No Golden Ticket for Tara.
Chris Kirkham, 26, "Pretty Baby" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"
I think Chris might have gotten through, because his voice isn't half-bad. But he goofed up his chances by bringing along a friend in a pink bunny outfit. Simon looks like he's about to jump out of the window, but accepts Bunny's hug with good cheer. No ticket for Chris.
Frankie Jordan, 23, "You Know I'm No Good"
This girl sounds just like Amy Winehouse. In fact, if she got a few tattoos and bundled her hair into a rat's nest on top of her head, you probably couldn't tell the difference between her and Amy. She sails easily through to Hollywood, with Simon saying, "I like your voice, and you've got a cute little face."
Megan Corkrey, 23, "Can't Help Lovin' That Man"
Megan looks like she's about 15, but is already a tattoo'd, divorced mom of a 2-year-old. She sounds just like Duffy, and Simon says she's one of his favorite auditions so far because she's different. Kara says she has a glow about her. Megan goes through to Hollywood, and Ryan thinks she must be special because Simon used the word "love."
Austin Sisneros, 17, "When I Look to the Sky" and "It Takes a Village"
He's the senior class president of Riverton High School and knee-deep in planning for homecoming. But he'll have to start delegating to other students, because Austin is on his way to Hollywood. The judges aren't too sure at first, but they come around when he sings his heart out on his second song. You're just pulling for him to get through. Simon says he has to "become young," because "for your age, you could be great."
Taylor Vaifanua, 16, "Joyful, Joyful"
I wasn't too sure about this tall girl's song choice, but she does a great job with it, adding a bluesy vibe to the old-fashioned hymn. Kara says she saw her practicing in the bathroom a few times and is impressed with her voice. Randy compares her to Jordin Sparks and thinks it's one of the best vocals he's heard this season. Taylor is headed for Hollywood.
Rose Flack, 17, "I Feel the Earth Move"
Oh, this poor girl's sad story breaks my heart. Her dad died when she was 13, and her mom died two years later when she was 15. She was taken in by a local family, who love her like their own. Simon doesn't think it's the greatest song choice, but uses that L word again, saying, "There's something about you I absolutely love. You've got something special about you. I don't know what it is, but I'm going to remember you." Rose gets a Golden Ticket and immediately hugs all the judges. I hope she does well in Hollywood, because I'd love to see her in the final 12.
Thursday night, American Idol goes to New York City and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Next week, it's on to the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

This was a good episode -- especially after the let-down in Jacksonville.
I liked Rose a lot. She can get to the top 12 on personality alone, but she will have to sing better than she did last night. I hope she sticks with songs in a lower register.
The biggest surprise was Austin. The kid won't last one week in Hollywood.
The judges have made a few questionable calls this year, but the good ones could make for the best top 12 ever.

I liked Megan the best because she sounded distinctive to me, and her voice, while it wasn't love at half-split second sight, quickly grew on me. Then I liked Frankie because she sounds exactly like Winehouse, and I love Winehouse, not for her nesthead, but for her voice. I liked Taylor ok: her song choice was great, but she sang it so subtly and soft, I had to dig under to love it (and I am not really a fan of Jordan Sparks). Rose felt the same to me: very soft/not distinct enough voice, but very distinct persona/background, so hopefully, she can drop of the shyness in her voice and increase her performance power.

If the Osmond kid had a different last name he would not have made it to the next round.

so this is more of a question than a comment....but why do the judges use the same bathroom as the contestents? somehow that seems like it would make for some awkward moments.
