If you're a regular Top Chef watcher -- like me -- you know that when it comes to being a straight-shooter, down to earth, regular person, professional chef Tom Colicchio fills the bill. He's a tough judge, but pretty fair. He's also supposedly a world-class chef and restaurant mogul, but since I've never been to any of the Craft restaurants to had him cook a meal for me, I have to assume that's true. One thing I do know is true, however, is that Tom Colicchio saved a life. Seriously.
On Monday night at a pre-Inaugural benefit in Washington, D.C., hosted by cookbook scribe Joan Nathan, when the hostess choked on a piece of chicken and author Alice Waters screamed for someone to help her, Chef Tom rushed over, assessed the situation and gave Ms. Nathan the Heimlich maneuver. After a few pulls, the chicken was dislodged and the party resumed.
In his undramatic, unassuming fashion, Colicchio downplayed the heroics. He said he did what anybody else would've done. In a party of hundreds, though, he was the one who acted and he's the one who deserves the pat on the back. Good work, Chef Tom.
By the way, while at the soiree, fans of Top Chef were giving it to Tom for last week's ouster of Ariane from New Jersey. I have to agree with those complainers; no way Ariane deserved to be sent home. So her roast lamb wasn't tied beautifully and her butchering skills left something to be desired. She still contributed more to her team than either Hosea or Leah. My guess is that the latter two were spared the chopping block because they may or may not be having a fling. Call me cynical, but a potential romance among the chefs might make better TV than a Jersey mom and small town restaurant owner.

I suppose every restauranteur should know the Heimlich, in case their food is that delicious. Glad a life was saved.

They all deserve to go home. It's the worst group of chefs they've ever had, which sucks because last season they had the best ever. And now the challenges are as creative and interesting as ever.
BTW - Good work Colicchio, good karma means more season for Top Chef - The 2nd best food show on TV(suck it Food Network, ask Aida is lame).

Couldn't agree more. The chefs this year have been extremely ordinary - all in what Blaise described on his blog as "survival mode", i.e. just doing safe, boring stuff that they won't get sent home for. Bring back thegood ones from past series next year for an All Star series!

Ariane just isn't Top Chef material. She's Food Network material, and she would be a great Rachael Ray - a person that is personable, hard-working, but without the skill of Bobby Flay or Mario Batali. She's a cooking mom, could she expect to to go this far? The judges simply kept the chefs that had a chance of winning the competition.

Allison, if you ever get the chance I highly recommend any of Toms Craft restaurants.. I didn't know who Tom was before watching the first season of TC and I wanted to try one of his restaurants really badly, so when I had my bachelor party in Vegas we ate at Craft Steak in the MGM Grand.. I'm from Houston and beef is king here, but Tom's restaurant there is AMAZING!! Six guys all had the kobe tasting menu and it was easily the best beef I've ever had.. I've gotten the impression from TC that Tom seems like a genuine down to earth guy and I'm glad that he's getting press like this article to help bolster that sentiment.
