(S02E13) This episode was much better than last week's, which made me really uncomfortable. It was a Sheldon-centric episode, and while those can be hit or miss, I thought this one was pretty good. I enjoyed the subject of the episode, Sheldon trying to make a friend, because I'm sure that everyone who watches BBT has at some point wondered how this guy has any friends at all.
Sheldon has no idea how he has any friends either, so he has to invest a lot of time in research in order to come up with some sort of answer: the friendship algorithm. He's got some pretty strong science behind it; I may just have to reference it the next time I'm in the market for a friend.
I'm not really thrilled that they brought Kripke back. I still don't understand his character or why they give him a speech impediment. Nobody likes him, but they don't actually flesh out his character enough to make the audience really understand why. All you remember about him is the way he speaks. Everything else about him is superfluous, which makes him a waste of screen time.
Even though this episode did center around Sheldon's adventures, they were able to use the rest of the cast pretty well. As you can see from my favorite lines below, they didn't get many of the jokes, they were all reserved for Sheldon, but they all got to have some nice interactions with him.
Sheldon did the famous "knock knock knock. Penny. Knock knock knock. Penny," and they had a nice little scene together about their friendship when he asked her to fill out the questionnaire asking what about him she likes. Sheldon and Wolowitz also had a nice moment when Wolowitz begged Sheldon to cut him from the group.
All in all, it was pretty funny, but one of the things that bothers me about The Big Bang Theory is how isolated each episode is. There are very few callbacks to previous episodes. When they were sitting around talking about friendship and whether or not Penny is part of the group, wouldn't it have been a perfect time to bring up Leonard Nimoy's napkin? But since it happened a whole two episodes ago, they didn't. It's like the entire Christmas gift exchange never occurred. It's kind of a dumbing down of the show, and while you may not notice it a lot of the time, when you do, it's pretty glaring.
ETA: The bookstore. Oh, man. First of all, where were that girl's parents? Shouldn't someone other than Leonard have been rushing out to put a stop to this? She was way too willing to go to the zoo with a stranger. I'm looking forward to the Very Special Episode of BBT where Sheldon ends up on To Catch a Predator. Poor guy. He just wanted a friend.
Some of my favorite lines from this episode:
Penny: "What's up with Ichabod?"
Leonard: "Oh, he's trying to make a new friend."
Penny: "Well good for him."
Leonard: "Unless he makes one out of wood like Geppetto, I don't think it's going to happen."
Sheldon: "'Coping with the Death of a Loved One.' My condolences."
Woman in bookstore: "Thank you."
Sheldon: "Family or friend?"
Woman: "Family."
Sheldon: "Too bad. If it had been a friend, I'm available to fill the void."
"A fear of heights is illogical. A fear of falling, on the other hand, is prudent and evolutionary." --Sheldon
"What part of an inverse tangent approaching an asymptote don't you understand?" --Sheldon
"Howard. You do not have a PhD. Your cologne is an assault on the senses, and you're not available for video games during the Jewish high holidays." --Sheldon

I think this is a good review. ("Good" as in "apt," not as in "favorable.")
However, I think the line was, "Unless he makes one out of wood like Geppetto." Geppetto, the carpenter who makes his son Pinocchio out of wood.

That's It's funny because I read your comment and thought, "of course that's what the line is. That's what I wrote," but then I read the comment below yours and realized that at some point "Geppetto" had been turned into "Ghetto," which must have been the result of spell check gone awry.
Anyway, it's fixed now. Thanks for the catch, everyone!

You failed to mention anything about the part where Sheldon tries to befriend the little girl at the bookstore. The scene was funny, yet so uncomfortable to watch!

And just as funny is while Sheldon doesn't comprehend how his actions could be perceived by others, Leonard is just as quick to see that Sheldon is doing an excellent (if unintentional) imitation of a sexual predator.
Sort of like that episode where Sheldon asked the guy out (on behalf of Penny, but Sheldon didn't mention that). But Leonard, Raj, Howard, and Leslie all understood immediately that Sheldon had unintentionally hit on the guy.
It is a VERY good thing Sheldon has friends who understand him well enough to not be offended, and to (like Leonard last night) grab his arm and yank him away from the situation before the police do.

Yes and the funniest part was when Leonard ushered Sheldon out of the children's book area and said "Don't look... cameras."

I'm pretty sure it was 'Geppetto' and not 'Ghetto', unless there is another fairy tale that I am not aware of....

They really can do better, this was Season 1 quality at best. There were a couple of good ideas but in the end it was just ok. They are pretending as if it is a given now that the five hang out on a regular basis and I still don't buy that.

That's good, right?

I'm also sorry that your review missed the "Sheldon as friend/sexual predator" scene at the bookstore. It was hilarious, and it pointed out that, while Sheldon's intellect is on a much-higher plane than everyone else's, his social interactions are on a par with the small child.

I liked the brief moment between Wolowitz and Penny when Kripke joins them in the apartment and he makes some crass remark and then Wolowitz says something about "I'm not looking too bad now" or something and Penny has this ear to ear smile.
It felt very sincere and just natural. I like little moments like that especially it sitcoms.

I thought one of the funniest parts was when Kripke said that Penny's name wasn't hot enough so he'll call her Roxanne. Then Wolowitz walks by and says; "Suddenly I'm not looking so bad."
That was probably a throw back to last week's episode.

This show continues to surprise me. I really thought it wouldn't have the legs to keep going, but I've really enjoyed this season.

I loved the whole random whistling bit as one of the criteria for Leonard being Sheldon's room mate. How funny was that exchange with Penny? Especially Leonard getting his first warning when he whistled as an example!

How about Sheldon's interaction with the kid? Not only was that funny/creepy, that also made a great point at how even though Sheldon has superior intelligence, his friends IQ is about the same level as a 4 year old.

I also don't understand the purpose for Kripke. Why not have Leslie be the one that he has to suck up to? Since Sheldon has an obvious dislike for her, it might have even been funnier than him sucking up to some random dude.

I agree... plus it would have actually given Leslie an actual, real reason to be in the cast.
