I started watching the Inauguration coverage this morning on ABC, where Charlie Gibson intoned about the historical aspects of this event while Diane Sawyer awkwardly tried to keep up. In the third chair was George Stephanopoulos, who I like, but have never paid a whole lot of attention to. He got my attention, however, during this coverage with his constant interjections of random facts.
A few things I learned from George Stephanopoulos this morning:
- JFK was inaugurated on a Friday, back when Catholics were not allowed to eat meat on that day. The Pope made a special dispensation so people could have bacon and eggs for breakfast.
- After Charlie Gibson wondered aloud where Obama got his confidence from, Stephanopoulos cited Obama's first book, Dreams From My Father, and announced that it was the father whom he barely knew that gave him his confidence.
- This one isn't so random because he worked for Clinton at the time, but when Gibson mentioned that Obama's speech was locked last night, Stephanopoulos said that Clinton worked on his up until that morning and that while he was going over it at about 4:30 am, Al Gore fell dead asleep.

I've always liked George. His autobiography after he left the White House was really good. He's the reason I watched ABC all day

This is what I don't get about the Catholic faith: if it's God's will that you don't eat meat on a Friday or whatever, who is the Pope (a human being, the last I checked) to say "Well....I guess it's OK in this one instance."

The Pope is considered the "official" representative/spokesman for God.

Good thing his staff gave him a list of random facts to throw out there. Otherwise people would have been less than impressed!
