(S05E12) This episode was a perfect teaser to what House fans can look forward to for the rest of the season. It was well done, though not excellent, and set up a couple of key narrative threads that are sure to be slowly unraveled as we move forward.
This week's patient's comes to House courtesy of Cameron, who insists that the team help a man suffering from severe chronic pain that has no known cause. It's gotten so bad that the patient, even with a beautiful wife and kid, tries to kill himself. Multiple times. While his kid is watching. Yeah, it's a bit brutal.
The first time we see House, he's gingerly massaging his bad leg in the bathtub, and looks to be in agony. Of course, the parallels between the patient's excruciating pain problem and House's worsening leg pain are not lost anyone. And it makes for some really uncomfortable viewing, which the show seems to thrive on.
While House and the team are trying to solve the case, Cuddy discovers that being a working mom is not so easy. She prepares for a CPS visit and quickly realizes that she can't do both her job and be a mom without help.
Wilson makes a small cameo appearance holding a giant yellow duck that's oddly endearing and very Wilson like to give Cuddy a pep talk. It's nice to see someone show Cuddy a little support. And with the addition of the baby, things between her and House seem to haves stalled out completely. I'm a fan of House and Cuddy together but am happy to let that plot rest for a while.
I am enjoying the slowly evolving friendship between Kutner and Taub. While being marginally involved in solving this case, they bicker back and forth about who suicide hurts the most. Kutner slowly draws it out of Taub that he once tried to kill himself, but thankfully wasn't successful.
One caveat I do have though, is with the Mom in this episode. Why would this mother let her kid be in the room while the father's undergoing all these horrible tests? Can't they find a relative or neighbor to look after him for a while? Poor kid is going to need some extensive therapy considering his Dad asked his help in committing suicide. Next time, find a nanny.
The last thing to touch on: Foreman and Thirteen. How do people feel about them as a couple? I have to say that I was a bit surprised when they kissed. I'm not really a fan of them together, but that has to do with other reasons, which I'll get into probably in another post. What I do like is that Thirteen seems to be a happier person and therefore, less annoying in my book.
The episode is a successful bridge between the first half of the season and what's to come. We've ended with some really intriguing questions for the second half of the season. Will Cuddy give up her high-powered job to spend more time with the kid? Will Cameron actually take Cuddy up on her offer and become House's boss? Is Foreman going to compromise the study and tell Thirteen she's only on the placebo? And House's worsening leg pain casts an ominous pall over the doctor's already miserable mood. Changes are afoot and I don't expect it to go some place warm and fuzzy.

Good episode in all, points taken away for the bizarre repeated use of "D-Y-F-S" by Cuddy for DYFS...as anyone who grew up in Jersey can tel you, it's called "die-fiss." Aren't Kal Penn and Bryan Singer actually from Jersey, weird that at least Penn wouldn't say anything.

DYFS is an acronym for Division of Youth and Family Services so the proper pronunciation is D-Y-F-S. Like all acronyms some people will pronounce it as a word but Cuddy, being an administrator who deals with these types of agencies, seems like the type to pronounce the name correctly.

Disagree. The "proper pronounciation" of the word is whatever the locals really use, and it's not D-Y-F-S, whatever the profession of a person is. As someone who spent 18 years in the state, it's "die-fiss." My dad's been a cop there for 30+ years, and he and DYFS officials themselves say "die-fiss" and not D-Y-F-S. Just sloppy research.

As someone not familiar with DYFS, I would have been pretty confused with them immediately pronouncing it as one word without any explanation. At least with using the acronym DYFS, I could assume it was a governmental agency, probably a version of childrens protective services. Although, I did spend an annoying amount of time being distracted from the show while trying to guess what DYFS stood for after each time they said it. But that could just be me :)

@Tom: It's only an acronym if you pronounce it like one. (In this case, die-fiss.) Otherwise, it's just initials.

Agreed, it's definitely pronounced something like die-fuss, 22 years in NJ, and I've never heard it said D-Y-F-S; it's either DYFS or said in full.
Of course there are more important things to discuss, but Jersey pride always comes first.

Its pretty clear from the preview for next week that Cameron will take the job, at least temporarily. And House will make her hate every minute of it. Just a delightful turn of events all around, I think!

I agree, this could be fun, but only if the writers don't take the easy route and make Cameron a wimp. Cameron has shown in the past she can manipulate House with the best of them. The best thing that could happen is Cameron forcefully putting House in his place. The House character doesn't work unless, on occasion, someone knocks him down a peg or two.

I think Cuddy is going to make Cameron the deputy chief of medicine and not giving up her job entirely.

"Kutner slowly draws it out of Taub that he once tried to kill himself, but thankfully wasn't successful."
I thought Taub denied this by saying "Nope". Kutner then smiled with a kind of odd self satisfaction.

I think it more likely that, rather than tell Thirteen she's on the placebo, Foreman will consider switching Thirteen to the real medicine with or without her knowledge.

Did anyone else notice the new haircuts for everyone? Very obvious for House, Cuddy and Wilson. Don't know why I noticed it, but I did. Asked the wife and she did too. Is there a new head of makeup in Houseville?

Lisa - 14 = Foreman
House was being creative throughout the episode to tell the team that Foreman and 13 were an item.

Did I just miss the significance of what was going on with House looking for the name of a lawyer, and the subsequent follow-up visit where he gets the envelope from said lawyer?

He sent a fake threatening letter to the plumber or the insurance carrier about the water pipe in his apartment. I guess the lawyer found out he used his name and was a little pissed.

I agree!! More Wilson and clinic time, LESS 13!! The plumbing side story would have been better if House had more time on the air to develop it. There are simply too many characters on the show at the expense of more time for House and Wilson, etc., and that is unacceptable! Otherwise, it was a good episode. BTW, I adore Hugh, too!

I've been watching the repeats with my daughter on USA. I must say the early episodes with Cameron, Chase and Foreman were so good compared to the episodes that feature the new team. I hate that the old team is not getting much TV time. I'm not fan of Foreman's role with the team either as he doesn't spar as much with House like he used to. I don't like 13, Taud and Kutner. I would like to see more Wilson too. .

So House was responsible for the plumbing after all, right? From all the times he grabbed the pipe whilst climbing into the tub?

What kind of irks me is that 13 is gaining so much time in comparison to the others. I don't necessarily mind her, but she's had how many episodes of character development? Meanwhile Taub has like two episodes, and Kutner so far doesn't have any. That's why people don't like the new team - we haven't gotten past the 2 dimensional sketch of a character.
I would like to see a few episodes shedding some light on Kutner's character. And I would also love to see more Wilson, because he's never on screen enough anymore.
