More TCA news: an actor from Lie to Me calls The Mentalist "a scam."Reporters asked the panel from the new FOX drama about the possible similarities between the two shows (which a lot of people have been talking about), and Brendan Hines said "the difference between the two shows is that our show is based on actual science, while Mentalist is, I think, more of a scam." I'm not sure what the hell that is supposed to mean. Is her referring to how Simon Baker's character was a phony psychic, or does he think that the creators of The Mentalist and CBS are pulling the wool over the eyes of viewers?
The Roth character won't solve murders every week, he'll be involved in other cases too. I would assume the same with Baker's character as some point. Something that Lie to Me producer David Nevins said is rather odd though, making a dig at Baker's fake American accent: "Americans think a British accent makes you smarter." Also, Gordon Ramsay and Simon Cowell have British accents. Um...OK (Roth is keeping his accent for the show).
Roth isn't worried about the comparisons. In fact, he hasn't even seen The Mentalist.

@Leah
Of course they aren't the same, Psych is intentionally funny, and The Mentalist is funny when it tries to be dramatic. It's the same concept, except one lies about his abilities and masquerades as a psychic. Simon Baker is funny and the only reason I watch the show, but the rest of the cast can't act their way into an elementary school production of Peter Pan.

Australian's have a british accent because Australia is a former british colony without them rebelling and/or losing their accent. That's all. People from australia sport british accents

Except, they don't.

Read the first sentence of the history. I'm assuming that your first language isn't English Stillbash, which would explain why you have difficulty in distinguishing the differences in phonology between the two groups. (And I say "group" lightly when referring to Brits, as they're an extremely heterogeneous language group.)

Canadians never "rebelled" and we don't have British accents, either. How ridiculous to say an Aussie accent is a British accent.

Eddie: I'm not sure what you mean. Are you saying that The Mentalist isn't successful?

I wouldn't say that The Mentalist is more successful than Psych because it hasn't had the same amount of time to prove itself, but it is successful so far, and it's certainly more mainstream than Psych.
As for Lie to Me, I think Brendan Hines really misstepped there. I don't think you will gain viewers by insulting a show they already like.

Successful in the TV biz = ratings.
The Mentalist has been #1 in the network Neilson Ratings with over 18 million viewers for its highest rated episode.
Psych has been #1 in the cable Neilson Ratings with over 6 million viewers for its highest rated episode.

I think perhaps what the Fox people are saying is that Lie to Me will do more of a job of explaining the science that The Mentalist employs to uncover the truth. Patrick Jane's actions are often subtle, like placing a hand in a suspect while they're being interrogated and checking their pulse, and don't always get revealed afterwards.
By the title alone, Lie to Me will focus on uncovering lies, where as The Mentalist often uses suggestive techniques to act in ways that don't necessarily directly lead to a lie being revealed.

I have never see Lie to Me, but I know The Mentalist is fun to watch. Will LtM be as fun? They should not be snobby before they prove themselves.
