(S07E04) "I'm not with anyone until someone starts answering some questions." - Jack
As great as it is getting early screeners for a show, believe it or not, there's actually one caveat - especially when you're writing reviews. It forces you to choose your words ever so carefully, respecting the fact that not everyone has seen what you have. When it comes to 24, that's no easy task. Trust me - it wasn't easy knowing the whole truth about Tony while writing about the first hour of this season. One can only drop little hints like "humongous twist" and "there's more to this" so many times before you start to sound like a know-it-all jerk.
That being said, I can breathe a sigh of relief now because I'm caught up with the rest of the world and the truth - the whole humongous twist truth - is finally out.
I previously mentioned that Tony isn't completely bad. However, now we know he wasn't completely good either. He's nothing more than a bad guy with a conscience. Emerson saved Tony's life, helped fake his death, and gave him a job. Tony ran Emerson's crew of baddies for three years, fueled by his anti-government feelings, until the stakes got too high (the CIP device). Enter Bill and Chloe - the remnants of CTU.
With Dubaku paying off government officials using Sangala's diamond wealth, it didn't really give Jack much choice other than to join the cause. Besides, he really has nothing better to do... except go to jail. The look on Jack's face when he realized that Tony really was a terrorist for three years was pretty steely though - I really thought he was going to punch Tony after that bit of info. However, with two men on the inside, the "new CTU" is certainly better off that they were four hours ago. One thing that bothers me? How come they don't have more people involved? Yes, the government is corrupted - I get that. But surely there are some other folks out there they can trust. Heller? Karen Hayes? Morris?
Hands down, the most exciting part of the hour was Henry's meeting with Samantha - confirmation that Roger found hard evidence on a member of his mother's cabinet having ties to Sangala. Something about trading with a Sangalan company via a Swiss bank in the Bahamas and the potential to reap millions should Juma's cause succeed. Henry looked floored when he heard the news, but that wasn't the most intriguing part - Agent Gedge watched the whole exchange. I don't think he's bad, but in his effort to do the right thing, he'll probably end up telling the wrong person about the meeting. My gut still wants to say that the corrupt member is Ethan Kanin, Taylor's Chief of Staff, but he's too obvious. He's been acting shady and has thus far played a major role. So if it isn't him, could it be someone we haven't met yet? Who's the Vice President?
More thoughts on hour four -
-
Sean's wife being on the plane is essentially the exact same plot as Adam's sister being exposed to the virus in season three.
-
I can't believe that after not seeing Jack for over three years, Bill was ready for Jack to be an acceptable loss. That just didn't feel right. Then again, he made almost the same call when Jack got out of the Chinese prison and Bill was ready to hand him over to Abu Fayed last season.
-
How great was it when Walker went all "Jill Bauer" on Tanner in the hospital? She got the info she wanted.
-
I'm not 100% clear on what kidnapping Matobo is going to get Dubaku. Sure, he could use Matobo as a bargaining chip with the President, but I thought the CIP device served that purpose pretty well. So is there another reason?
-
I loved the exchange between Jack and Emerson. No fooling Jack - the man has all the right answers. I wonder if Emerson had ever considered Jack as an ideal candidate for his organization? He went though many of the same things Tony did and when Jack traveled the world after season six, how come Emerson never reached out to him? Seems a little odd that a guy so concerned with results would track Tony but not Jack. Bauer is infinitely more "qualified."
For now, and there's really no other way to say this, but it's going to be a race against time. Agent Walker is proving to be far more resourceful than expected and I bet it won't be long before she and Jack cross paths again. Something tells me it won't be a friendly exchange.

Gage Whitney Pace... Wasn't that the law firm Sam Seaborn worked for in The West Wing during flashbacks? Also, didn't Sorkin also use them in Studio 60, in the K&R sequence? How did they end up on 24?

Ok, yes this is fiction and all, but what are the creators of this show really presenting ? That a president would really agonize over the continuing genocide of a country we're not even allied with over her own constituent population ?! Really ?! That even low level FBI agents like Sean throw professional ethics to the wind (impersonating his boss and claiming a national security concern) when their family members are only somewhat jeopardized ? That a career by-the-book, obey-the-law FBI agent instantly goes rogue when she realizes that the Ends Justifies the Means. There are moles within the FBI, there are corrupt factions in the President's inner circle ? Just had jaded are these guys ?!
It actually shouldn't be surprising. Between Halliburton, Cheney, KBR, etc and the financial meltdown due to corruption/incompetence at the highest levels of corporate America and the US government, the fictional environment of "24" isn't as far fetched as it should seem.
I guess what they're driving at is that in an environment of corrupt federal government(s) allied with corrupt corporations it takes a set of badged vigilantes to set things right. I guess we should like to see that play out in "24" and maybe hope that real-life agents heed the call. Then again, maybe I'm just overthinking this ...

Yeah I agree on this point too. Is this even a decision?
"That even low level FBI agents like Sean throw professional ethics to the wind (impersonating his boss and claiming a national security concern) when their family members are only somewhat jeopardized ?"
Not really that surprising if you consider his wife could potentially die.
"That a career by-the-book, obey-the-law FBI agent instantly goes rogue when she realizes that the Ends Justifies the Means."
We don't know for sure that her back story is sweaky clean.

Yeah, there's something about the invading a third world country within the next 24 hrs or all hell will break lose kind of irks me. I mean this dictator has been murdering hundreds of thousands of his people in the past for the longest time, what's a few weeks let alone 24 hrs, let alone 6 hrs? Couldn't the President just wait this out until the crisis is over?

Maybe I missed it but how did Tanner know about the Matobo kidnapping? Jack and Tony didn't until Emerson told them.

Tanner already knew about the job. Tony asked him about the next job when Tanner was driving back to the boat (after the sniper incident).
Tanner told Tony he would tell him the plan when he got back, but he got shot and captured first.

Dubaku wants to crucify Matobo. That's reason enough to kidnap someone. I don't think the Pres. has anything to do with that scenario; it's just pure ol' hate.

Taking Matobo would also rob the US President of a legitimate government figurehead for the regime change. Plus he's probably sick of seeing Matobo on TV denouncing their government.

See, now I have a real dilemma here. I can't decide if I'm going to refer to Agent Walker as "Agent Hottie McKickAss" or "Jill Bauer" for the rest of the season. I think that's what we really should be discussing.

I also vote Jill Bauer! I just hope that those two cross paths and she gets on board with the "A-Team". I really like having a female character on this show, working with Jack, that doesn't have to be rescued.

2 comments/questions:
1. Will Sean's wife's plane being moved to the head of the line now be subject to the next terror use of the CIP device? We should assume that the bad guys in control of the device will want to show it off again and they won't have the same "morals" as Tony in calling the collision off at the last instant.
2. I agree that the show is pointing at Chief of Staff Kanin as the top-level bad guy, and I also think that it's just a distraction and the real bad guy will be someone else. Maybe the Secretary of State? Have we even seen him yet?
Great beginning to this season!

Bill never considered Jack an 'acceptable loss.' As he said, he knew Jack could handle it...which he did.
'Suicide' subplot = bored now. Between those scenes and the 'torture is wrong' gang, 24 has added multiple pee breaks this season.

We've met the Sec. of State, he's the guy the President berated in front of the joint chiefs. The bad guy behind everything is Jon Voight, who we saw in Redemption. I assume he's a gov't official...perhaps even VP, but he could also be a businessman or something...

The first couple hours were a little stiff, but they ramped it up in the third and fourth hours. Everything's clicking now.
If I'm right, everything we've seen so far this season is a total distraction. The "underground CTU" revelation is not the big twist.
I think the Gage Whitney Pace? mention was merely a shout-out to The West Wing and Aaron Sorkin.

If you’re so worried about dropping spoilers because you get to watch the episodes early why don’t you just write your reviews as you go? It would make it easier and make you seem a whole lot less pompous.
