Imagine, if you will, that President-Elect Barack Obama asks you to come work for his new administration. Yes, you can also imagine that you're a neurosurgeon who's also a TV personality on CNN and CBS. So, what would you say if Mr. Obama asked you to come work for the White House? That's the question facing Dr. Sanjay Gupta, who was asked to be surgeon general, a fact that he confirmed today. The CNN health reporter was offered the job as America's top doc, a role that hasn't been filled by anyone with real influence since Dr. C. Everett Koop.
Dr. Gupta is reportedly contemplating the request, but if I were him, I'd say yes. Sanjay Gupta is someone who wants to make a difference. As CNN's chief medical correspondent, he's been all around the world reporting on health issues.
He's won awards -- a Peabody and an Emmy -- and he's helped to educate millions of people. That's impressive, but as the surgeon general, he could do even more.
For starters, if Dr. Gupta is the surgeon general -- the country's doctor -- there's no need for a public service campaign to introduce him to the public. Most people probably know who he is already, so he could hit the ground running on whatever public health issues the Obama administration deems most important.
Also, this opportunity would only enhance Sanjay Gupta's reputation. He could always come back to TV in the future, so I say, "go for it."

I never cared for Michael Moore, but I sure did enjoy how he tore Gupta a new one a few years ago. Look it up on Youtube.
I've never been able to take Gupta seriously since then.

That went the other way, chief. Moore got owned by Gupta on facts.

Yeah Malren, Gupta really "tore into" Moore with arguments that were not even about the things mentioned in "Sicko".
Moore sure is controversial but I agree with Michael (the above poster) and because the stuff that has been shown in "The Daily Show"'s moment of Zen this week just show that Gupta is a doc who simply sold out to tabloid-TV. He's simply a figurehead who would fit perfectly as Surgeon General because it has nothing to do with actual medicine, something he's been doing on CNN for years now if you ask me.

Gupta is a highly skilled neurosurgeon that has unique and valuable skills and instead of USING them to perform operations and HELP people, he goes on TV to get fame and money.
That is not a good character trait, someone who is so badly needed in the medical world perfering to make money over doing something to HELP the world.
Anyone can sit in front of a camera but few can peform nuerosurgery.
Gupta is a money grubbing fame graber, so he'll fit in fine with Obama who only wanted to be president after Oprah said he was cute

i saw the moore interview and Gupta was hung on one particular stat where the WHO said 6,500 veterans went to Cuba for medical treatments and Moore's movie said 7400. Gupta hammered him on this, but the fact that one American had to go to Cuba!!!! is the problem.
Gupta wouldn't concede that Moore's movie SICKO still brought out how f**ked up our medical system is for the middle and working poor.
Gupta seemed scared to be "controversial" in talking injustices on the downtrodden masses.
