So now that we know the identity of the actor to play the next Doctor on Doctor Who, the Telegraph newspaper in the U.K. is now beginning speculation on the identity of the Doctor's next traveling companion. Since this is speculation, I would take it with a grain of salt. At least it's not from the other British "newspaper" the Sun.They seem to think that the BBC and the producers will go with the semi-famous pop star route that proved successful with Billie Piper (The article throws out names like Lily Allen). It's a safe bet that whomever the Doctor's next companion is will be young and female.
Given the complete history of the show, companions have run the gamut. Since the reboot, I liked Rose and Martha and adored Donna (up until the end, which I fell flat a bit). For his remaining specials, David Tennant's Doctor will be pretty much companion-less. Who would you like to see join the next Doctor for a romp in the TARDIS?

I really don't see how they can keep bringing rose back if they do intent to bring her back. the whole point of her being trapped in a parallel dimension was so that she couldn't come back.
I want Jenny back, but it would be a bit weird now that the new doctor looks roughly her age. the more i think about it the more i want an older doctor (at least 30s-ish). to see Jack again would be great too. i'd like to see older companions and more male companions for a change.

I thought Donna was the worst of the companions, I skipped alot of this series because of her grating personality which I think was supposed to translate into humor. And no, it isn't a UK=> US translation of differences that did it.
I thought Martha was the best, almost an equal to the Doctor and Rose the "one who got away" but they can't keep milking that.
With this Doctor so young why not an older companion? Not ancient (over 40 is ancient by TV standards) but this is really a children's programme so there will have to be the derring do and adventure type partner.
Just no pretty arm candy please, even the Doctor must have a reason to flirt with all the aliens.

Martha was just annoying IMO, I liked her on the first episode she did introducing her, but after that she got shrill and hard to watch. I was just wondering last night what kind of companion they would find for the Doctor. I think the daughter has possibilities, I don't see why she has to be younger. After all his granddaughter, should they happen to find her someday (how could she have made it back for the timewar?), would be old enough to be parent or grandparent to either of them in human years assuming she hasn't regenerated yet.

And I just wanted to add that if they DO bring in the Doctor's daughter then a guy companion would be great because they can play up the romance angle there if they wished since they wouldn't pair the Doctor with his daughter (yikes!).

It's a crime that this hasn't happened already, but if they don't bring back Carey Mulligan as Sally Sparrow from "Blink", then someone should be flogged mercilessly. She carried an entire episode of Doctor Who almost single-handedly and it was one of the best episodes ever made.
So again I nominate:
Carey Mulligan to reprise her role as Sally Sparrow.

Agreed SO much. Part of why I liked Donna so much is that she and the Doctor acted more like best friends than love interests. A main male companion (as opposed to Jack's more secondary status on the series) would be a nice change for New Who.

Sally Sparrow and the "Blink" episode worked so wonderfully BECAUSE they were a one-off, not despite it. Bringing her back would have the same effect as Rose's return in "Journey's End" i.e. superfluous.
The Who production team REALLY need to move away from the modern era companion and cast someone from, say, the Victorian or Edwardian eras.
Of course this isn't going to happen because the companion on Nu Who has to be "relatable" to the audience, but one can hope.

To completely change it up, why not have a male companion who needs to travel with the Doctor for something tangible. Like they're searching for some one or something.
So far all three companions have been there for the same reason, travel and excitement. They end up totally devoted to the Doctor because he's the only one who can provide that for them. If you have a companion who needs something else then I think a world of interesting choices can open up, as they may not always have a slavish devotion to the Doctor, as there may be other avenues to getting what they want.
Plus with such a young actor it'll be tougher for him to have such an authoritative presence. Prior male companions, especially Mickey, were prone to competition with the Doctor, and I think now is the perfect time to explore that idea.

I would like to see two female companions,with polar opposite personalities .One is nice to him but secretly hates him (to be revealed later in the season maybe) and the other is mean to him to hide that she's secretly is in love with him but can't tell him because she is already married!In other words companions with a lot of baggage.
