Lauren Velez, also known as Maria LaGuerta of Showtime's Dexter, has signed on for a guest role on Ugly Betty. No word on when she will be shooting her episodes or what she'll be doing, apart from wearing a nurse's uniform. In the world of Ugly Betty, though, that could really mean anything, right? According to the article, the super-secrecy surrounding her role has to do with a major plot point regarding one of the main characters. Let's hope Nurse Velez will give this show just enough to save it.
These past one-and-a-half seasons of Ugly Betty have been a real drag, and I still find myself waiting for someone, something to bring that old spark back to the show. Even the costumes have seemed less interesting and a little desperate for extra quirkiness. I remember when Marc's strange pattern choices were charming and delightful and he didn't look like he was wearing sweaters made of softened tree bark. But I digress ...
The way they've been stunt casting and barely using characters like Betty's neighbor Jesse is bordering on careless. Use those characters carefully and meaningfully, or, better yet, work on making us like Betty again, because I'm starting to forget what that's like.

love her on Dexter (first season she annoyed the heck out of me, but i've really warmed up to her since).
Glad to see her getting more work!

she annoyed us in the first season of Dexter because she was so mean to Deb. Now she and Deb are friends - she even promoted Deb to detective. She made Deb's life hell in season one, only putting her in homicide per the direct order of the Captain.
But Velez is a great actress, and her talents really showed through in the last season of Dexter. Her interactions with Ellen Wolf and Miguel Prado - especially after she suspected the later of murdering the former - were fantastic.
I'm sure she'll be great on Ugly Betty, but UB needs more, and better, plots and less one-off guest stars. They should have a moratorium on guest stars to force them to put more energy into plot. Is Rebeca Romaijn gone for good?

Taking into account the preview at the end of the last episode any regular viewer of the show can easily guess who the nurse is there for and who will bite the bullet eventually. Why they are being so secretive when it's blatantly obvious is a mystery to me
