Whoopi Goldberg has had an interesting, diverse career. She started as a stand-up comic, went into acting, became one of only 13 people to win an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony, co-hosted the original Comic Relief with Robin Williams and Billy Crystal, had a major recurring role in Star Trek: The Next Generation (as well as being a series regular for one season for that show) and has been a co-host on The View (this is a synopsis. I know I'm leaving a lot out, including Hollywood Squares and a memorable appearance on Absolutely Fabulous). While her star has faded somewhat, she keeps getting involved with interesting projects. Perhaps she feels she's conquered the mountain and therefore will try anything that comes along that piques her interest. With that in mind, she's starring in an online mini-series called Strange for FEARnet.com. She is also an executive producer.
Online-only series tend to not be as popular as their television equivalents, but kudos to Goldberg for her career experimentation.

Second season. I don't think she got regular billing but she was in all the promotional materials as a regular cast member, even the standard yearly cast photo.
Fun fact: The producers specifically created the role of Guinan for her because she loved the show and asked to be part of it.
