No, not that one. We talked about the Lost season five promotional art weeks ago! I'm talking about the new official season five cast photo.
With the new season just a little over a month away, ABC has released what typically is the best indicator of who you can expect will be playing a big role in the coming season. Then again, when it comes to the intricacies of Lost, being left out of the official cast photo might not mean anything at all.
I don't want to spoil anyone, so take a look after the jump...
See anyone missing? The main thing that jumped out me was no Frank Lapidus! He played as big a role as any of the other three boaties last season (Miles, Charlotte, and Daniel are all pictured) and even though he was rescued at the end season of season four, I still have a lot of Frank questions. But like I said, when it comes to Lost, being left out of the cast photo probably doesn't mean squat.
The producers wisely left Jin out of the picture so that his death(?) still remains a mystery, but I wonder if Sun being the only person sitting on the ground in the picture is some kind of nod to him? Being closer to where her husband now is? Or at least where she thinks he is? Don't forget that Sun "buried" her husband after being rescued. After all, she has no reason to think otherwise. Last she saw him was in the freighter explosion. I also like how Hurley is closest to the window - ready to jump and get away if he needs to.
The only other people I would have expected to have appeared in the shot were Matthew Abaddon and Richard Alpert. Maybe I'm wrong in my assumption, but I think they'll be playing a much larger role this season. It also took me a minute to recall why Claire wasn't in the shot - she won't be in season five. Plus, and I'm not sure what to make of it, but Kate isn't holding Aaron.
What does everyone else think? In general, I love the picture. It's the first one we've seen that's clearly more mainland than island. Kind of like they shoved a jungle into an NYC penthouse apartment. Has a very Jumanji-ish feel.

Locke in a button down shirt is kind of weird-ing me out. I'm so used to seeing him in his dirty tees.
I was kind of hoping Penny would be involved more this season too, I hope this means she and Desmond are being separated again.

This season is going to be big on Hurley. He is obviously set apart here, and as I posted on your blog entry about the season 5 poster Hurley had a corona of light around his head when none of the others did (as if a light source was right behind his head).
Can someone please post a link to a large photo of this so you can analyze it better?

Wait, is this a photo of the cast, or a photo of the Lost characters?
This looks like a photo of the cast. The first picture up there, "Destiny Calls" looks like a picture of the characters.
Depending which it is makes all the difference in terms of what you can deduce. Although, if someone is not in the cast, then they're probably not a character, either... although in Lost that's not necessarily true (Jin). So you really can't deduce squat from a CAST photo.
For what it's worth, I figured there was no more use for Lapidus and he'd just go his own way, and keep quiet. But who knows...

Judging by the fact that there is a box of Dharma crackers and what looks to be a Dharma soda bottle on the floor, I'd say this is a character photo, not just the cast members. And, correct me if I'm wrong, but that doesn't look like present-day L.A. in the background. There is something interesting about the fact that all the characters are wearing some combination of black and/or blue - maybe some way of connecting certain characters' story lines?

You're right. That isn't just good posture. When you look at the HD photo you can tell its unnatural.
I just got up for class and glanced at the hd link on here, and I noticed their hands seem to be indicating something. They are either showing or not. That sounds ridiculous now that I see it written down, but truly look at the photo. Also the ginger woman seems to be making a gesture like a zero with her hand that doesn't seem naturual.
About the city behind that looks like new york to me. i've never seen a part of la that looks like that. could it be seattle (never been there). Also In chicago at least we dont have water reservoirs on roofs like in the photo. is that common in other places? possibly that is a time indicator?
I would definitely say that some people aren't showing their hands.

Everyone is photoshopped in the picture. It isn't a gathering of everyone posing for a photo but everyone posed in a specific way and then superimpossed onto the background.
I'm not reading anything into that but it could mean something.
Personally I think everyone reads too much into everything Lost-related but then again a lot of those over-thinkers and observers stumble upon some awesome stuff.

Unfortunately for all the theorists out there, all the omissions you mentioned can all be explained away as the fact that this is the Main Cast picture. Frank, Richard, Abbadon, and Aaron were not given starring credits last season nor, presumably, this one, and thus they would not be included in the picture.

Again, some of you are nuts, plain nuts. It's just a photo by a professional and not by the show's producers. They added some dharma stuff afterward. Anyway, there is some manipulation here obviously, you can tell by the missing foot for example. Yet, there is video of some of them (and a certain person NOT in this particular picture) on the set for this photo shoot.

Actually with all the past seasons there were clues in the released photos. That is why people read into them. Why does looking at a picture for 2 or 3 minutes make you crazy? Billions of people on the planet are crazy then, cuz porn is a very successful industry.
