(S02E13) "Only a masochist could love such a narcissist." - Blair
Wow! I finished watching the last new episode of Gossip Girl before the hiatus about 10 minutes ago and my jaw is still not back in its place. Talk about an emotional and action packed episode! Gossip columnist such as Kristin Dos Santos and Michael Ausiello warned us that "O Brother, Where Bart Thou?" was one of the best GG episodes and they weren't lying! Not only did Ed Westwick gave one of his best performances to date, but the reveal as to what Lily's secret is just sent the series in spin mode as a lot of twists and turns can be brought up with it.
Bart may not have been a major player in the series and fans will probably not write angry letters to The CW saying that they made the worst mistake in killing him off but you have to admit that his death caused major chaos that will felt throughout the rest of the season if not beyond.
Chuck, masterfully played by Ed Westwick -- especially this week -- was quite shaken up by the death of his father. It may be surprising to some that Chuck reacted so strongly considering the lack of relationship he had with his father, but remember that the young Bass' mother passed away meaning that he is, in a way, now all alone and that Bart recently made some effort to be a better father. We also have to keep in mind, as both CeCe and Lily said, that everybody mourns in their own way.
What I'm afraid now is what will happen next for Chuck. He is clearly not thinking straight and he is reacting, not acting. Seeing Chuck crash and burn may be entertaining for a while but as a fan of the character, I do not want to see him self-destruct more than he already has. He must find his way back to being in control and, to do so, he will have to rely on his family (aka his friends) like it or not.
In case you were wondering about the content of Chuck's letter to Blair, he tells her that he's sorry for everything, that she deserves much better and he asks her not to look for him. Quite frankly, I hope Blair doesn't follow his request. Chuck is in need of a shoulder to mourn on and Blair is the best to provide that at this time. Not only did she finally tell him she loves him but she truly accepts him with all his flaws. Since Blair is a resourceful girl, especially when teamed with Dorota, it's only a matter of time before she finds Chuck's hiding place.
Bart's death also had major impact on the Lily and Rufus pairing. As you know, I'm a Lily/Rufus shipper and truly hoped that Bart's death would mean that they would finally be able to get a second chance. I was all giddy inside for about 90% of this week's episode as it did look like they would be a couple once again. In the back of my brain, I always thought that Lily went to the institution because of her relationship with Rufus. I expected the secret to be that she ended up being a huge mess after their breakup (maybe a depression and/or self-mutilation) but never thought that the secret would end up being a deal breaker.
So when I watched this week's episode, I expected Lily and Rufus to get a few week of lovin' before the Upper East Side reality came knocking. Yeah I know, it was foolish of me to think that the last episode before the hiatus would end perfectly for Rufus and Lily. But somehow, I wanted the GG people to give us a tiny gift before parting ways for a few weeks. Looks like my list to GG Santa got lost in the mail.
So Lily went to the institution not because she had mental problems but because she was with child. It's not 100% certain that Rufus is the father but considering his strong reaction, it's pretty much a given that he is. This storyline is not the most original out there (90210 has a similar storyline going on) but seeing it unfold in Gossip Girl's world can make it quite interesting. Rufus may have said "I will never be with Lily" after learning of the secret but, somehow, I expect them to patch things up in the end ("the end" can actually be the series finale).
Lily hid a major secret from him; therefore, he has all the rights to be pissed. However, Rufus is a down-to-earth and sensible man, so once he learns her reasons and sees his now-adult child, things may look differently and Rufus may want to give Lily another chance. In any case, that's my wish. So GG Santa please hear my request and make it happen before the series end.
What do you think of Lily's secret? What repercussions do you think it will have in the lives of our favorite Upper East Siders? What will be Chuck's next move? Are you happy that Eleanor and Cyrus got married? Share your theories, opinions and ideas in comments below.
Gossip Girl will return with fresh episodes on January 5.

I hate to say it but what if, and this is a big "what if," Rufus is Serena's father... If you look at her, you could some what see it... But then what would that do to her and Dan... Would GG writers be that twisted or just cruel in general?
The only thing to disprove this is their children and their ages... But still...
Any other ideas?

My twisted brain thought about this possibility for a second but than I told myself that Lily would surely have told her secret when Dan and Serena started to date and sleep together.

They're actors, any actual resemblance is purely coincidental.

This was HANDS DOWN the best episode of the series. Ed Westwick and Leighton Meester gave Emmy worthy performances. Their scenes were heart wrenching and beautiful. Stephanie Savage also deserves much props for writing this gem. In the next episode, Bart's younger brother finds and returns Chuck to the UES after he flees the country in grief. As for Rufus and Lily, I think her secret is that she had an abortion because of how Rufus put it "WAS it a boy or a girl?" as in past tense, as in not existent. That would explain why he is so angry, he had no say in the matter. I could be wrong, and they could have a grown child somewhere... who knows? Though, if that were true, it would make Dan and Serena almost impossible considering they'd share a half-sibling. (yeck) All in all, fantastic end to the year. I know the Golden Globes and Emmy's will snub them, but Leighton and Ed deserve accolades for their work!

Ed Westwick, as well as Leighton Meester, have always been the strongest actors on the show - tonight just being further evidence of that. Blair will find him. She will not just sit there and listen to what he tells her in the letter. Since when does Blair listen and not do what she wants? I fully support the idea of Chuck, Blair and Dorota getting their own spin-off show. Leave whiny Serena, self-righteous Dan and cardboard Nate behind.

I can't believe that Lily finally admitted that she loves Rufus. And Rufus singing again the "LILY SONG/EVERYTIME". I understand that Lily doesn't want to tell Rufus about their child because all those 6 years and 6 months of waiting will come to waste. But now that Rufus knows I guess that he'll try to understand. I hate it when they are about to be together and spending their time together then something will happen like Serena telling her mom that she can't be with Rufus and Lily accepting Bart's proposal and NOW Lily has a child with Rufus. And Rufus seems not happy about it. I can't wait what will happen next in their relationship. I still both LOVE them :D

has anyone thought that Lily's baby was aborted? Rufus used past tense. If the child were actually a child, I think he'd go after it.

You're right. Maybe she went there for an abortion. If it is the case, maybe she didn't go through it in the end and the child still exists and lives somewhere in Europe.

I also thought that she had an abortion, but would that be enough to explain Rufus' reaction? After all, they were both young and she might have had her reasons for doing that, so why does he say that he'll "never be with her"?
Also, almost everyone knew that Lily and Rufus were together when they were young, so why would it be so shocking to reveal that she was pregnant with his baby and had an abortion? I think it's much more than that...

Anna: What could be the much more than that? Could it be that the documents list the birthdate AND the father and that Rufus discovered that not only Lily cheated on him back then but that she got pregnant?

I knew that the big secret that probably was so twisted no one would want it to get out and that probably had to do with Rufus, probably had to do with a child. Now, I am also imagining this child thing is worse than abortion and worse than giving the child away: how about Lily had her child, but was so heartbroken (or crazed or something) that she was negligent and caused the death of that child; that would land her in a mental institution, to be kept hush, hush all these years; that would also be a (temporary?) deal breaker for Rufus (until he hears her side of the story?)

I think you are RIGHT on teh money!
Alot of people have been saying that maybe Chuck was the child (hence his significant line to Eric "we. are. not. brothers") but I think this makes so much sense. BFD - you had a kid and gave him up for adoption - Rufus would be mad at Lilly but would go look for him/her right away. And while giving a kid up for adoption might land a woman in the looney bin - it's not THAT scandalous anymore.

I don't that Chuck was the son that Lily and Rufus had because Chuck's mother died in childbirth. The only way that this would be possible is if people fed him the lie that his mother died in childbirth all these years when really Lily was his mother. But if Lily was his mother, then why would Chuck live with Bart? You might think that Bart adopted Chuck, but adopted kids would probably have a better relationship with their parents. Also, Bart would have had no reason to have a bad relationship with Chuck because his wife didn't die.
Possibly the theory of Lily causing the death of her child, but why would the Hospital in Paris have records of that? How could they get them and why would they want them? They wouldn't.
And the abortion theory, unless Rufus is a strong Pro-life activist, he probably wouldn't get as mad as he was at Lily for having an abortion. And let's face it, why would he have good Pro-life morals if he had pre-marital sex with Lily to begin with.
Somethings to think about...

we rufus did ask if it was a boy or a girl and its not like you know when you get an abortion you can only find out in the second trimester. has anyone considered that maybe she had the baby and it was serena? that would be gross though with dan and everything. maybe she gave it up for adoption and had to go to the looney bin because she had just given her child away. her mom seemed psycho back then too.

Post Partum Depression my friends. It's a nasty disorder. Woman has child, which explains her understanding of the sex of the child, and then gets depression and neglects or deliberately murders the child. This clearly explains the trip to the asylum and Rufus' reaction.

I also took Rufus' use of past tense to mean that the child was dead because of Lily having an abortion, which would explain why he would say to Dan that he would NEVER be with Lily.
