(S02E09) This season we've met Sarah's high school nemesis, who turned out to be a rogue spy, Chuck's ex-girlfriend, who turned out to be a rogue spy, and we had a return of Bryce, who was a spy from an opposing agency. This week, we met John Casey's former sensei, who is now a rogue spy. This brings me to a few conclusions...
First, the CIA really has a horrible retention program for its employees (most likely due to the pudding cups being eliminated from the cafeteria). Second, other than Chuck, his immediate family, and the employees at Buy More, everyone else is a rogue agent. Therefore, this little trio of agents will be eliminating the bad seeds from California for the next 22 seasons. Well, at least there's the job security.
We never really knew much about Casey before this episode other than he was in the spy game long before the Intersect became part of Chuck. Also, beneath Casey's crusty exterior was an even crustier interior. So, getting a taste of his past helped give us a feeling of who he was in the past. Which, it seems, was not the person we know today. Currently, Casey's focus is laser sharp. Back then, he was as jumble-minded as Chuck.
Because Ty Bennett was such an influence on the person John became it was quite a blow to learn that he had turned rogue...just as Jill's betrayal was to Chuck. It was no surprise that he decided to take this very personally. Unfortunately, he took it so personally that he began to neglect his main mission: protecting Chuck. I mean, his patience with the Intersect is tenuous at best on a normal day. Having his mentor turn to the 'Dark Side' and having Chuck hanging around nearly made him snap. How ironic it was that Chuck ended up 'saving' Casey's life by focusing his anger in order to defeat his sensei in a final battle.
By the way, you had to know that a final confrontation was going to take place between these two. There was just so much anger in Casey that, if he didn't end it there and then, he would have regretted it for the rest of his life. It was also pretty inevitable that Casey would eventually succeed. Because, you know, this is Chuck after all. What wasn't written in stone was the small 'Thank you' he gave Chuck for saving his life. Could that be a small crack in Casey's armored exterior? Nah, couldn't be!
Over to the sub-plots of this evening's programme. First, the 'Employee of the Month' situation at Buy More. I have to differ with the opinion of Morgan in this episode. As a retail graduate I actually aspired to be Employee of the Month. Granted, I never was that person, but at least I worked towards it. Yeah, I'm a dweeb...so sue me! Anyway, as these guys don't do much work as it is, I wasn't too sure how they could do even less to garner poor customer comments. Morgan got his comeuppance at the end as the actual Employee of the Month won a 65-inch flat screen TV. I'm sure that this win by Emmett is an aberration, a flux, in the universe and Morgan will return triumphant next episode.
The other event that took place this week was the introduction of the Family Awesome, played by Morgan Fairchild and Bruce Boxleitner. They were just, well, they were just okay. If anything, they were a bit too overwhelming in their wedding plans; plans that Ellie didn't really want. Wedding registry at the Buy More? Is this the only retail outlet in the area? I was glad to see that Ellie decided to speak up at the very end about the plans, particularly about the part where Woody Awesome wanted to walk her down the aisle.
Before I go I want to mention the Geek Moment of the Week. If you happen to scan Chuck's room when his sister was waking him up in a panic you would have noticed a poster from the film Tron. If you happen to recall, Bruce Boxleitner was one of the stars of that film. This was neat, but I wonder why there were no references to Bablyon 5 anywhere. At least I didn't see any.
Next time on Chuck: another blast from the past as we meet Sarah's father, played by Gary Cole.

I agree -- maybe we've become accustomed to better fighting moves from Yvonne, but Casey's fights just seemed clunky. Now that I think of it, we haven't seen much Baldwin Battle in any of the episodes, have we? Mostly gunplay and one-punch KO's.

Maybe its because I'm working late and ran out of liquor...but there seemed to be a whole lot of drinking this episode. Wine (red and white) everywhere!
Ok...maybe its me.

To be honest, the reference I was looking for the most was a "Scarecrow and Mrs. King" one. I think that would have fit right in with the Chuck motif. :P I wonder if they considered it but Kate Jackson aged too much for the part of Mrs. Awesome...
OK, yeah, I'm a massive geek. But dangit, I loved that show as a kid! :)

I was a little disappointed the Morgan & Bruce didn't have more screen time. I wanted to see them apologize to Ellie for taking over the wedding plans.
Wonder who will get the role of Chuck's dad?

Maybe it was just me, but did anyone feel the fight scene at the end was very Karate Kid-esque? The move Casey did was very "Daniel about the smash through blocks of ice" and the swinging punches remind me of that drum move from KK 2. Maybe I am just a sucker for 80's movies and was looking for the reference. For a moment I actually thought Chuck was going to yell out "Sweep the leg!" =)

Yes - it was directly taken from KK2.
The give away was the bloody nose on Casey
from the first fall and the beating of the hands in
unison.

Ah, yes the bloody nose, I forgot to mention that. It was a total giveaway. Well, John, I am glad I am not the only Karate Kid fan out there that picked that up. And the second one, no less =)

Chuck is being ripped off and I am not sure why he isn't complaining....
Casey and Sarah are fully paid and receiving benefits as CIA Agents PLUS they have paid day jobs.... Whereas Chuck gets the pay and benefits (gotta think this is small) from Buy More and no pay or benefits from the CIA. Time for him to begin big time contract negotiations....
The Father of the Bride thing surprised me. Why wouldn't the Big Sister want her devoted brother to walk her down the aisle after all they have been a family for so long w/o outside help...

I was thinking the same thing. Why now just have Chuck walk her down the isle.

Another 'meh' episode - that's two in a row for me. I actually thought the Buy More scenes were funnier than Chuck's. I mean, I know you can only write so many scenes like the one where Casey is about to kill Chuck becuase of all the noise he's making trying to crawl through the duct work, but come on, let's get back up to speed people!

Favorite Line: "Those seven years of MacGuyver finally paid off".
I still lust after Bruce Boxleitner even with grey hair!
I can't imagine why Ellie would want her dead beat dad to walk her down the aisle. I'm sure Chuck will find him but it will be far from a joyful reunion for Chuck and Ellie.

Plastic work or no work, who cares?!! Morgan Fairchild is still smoking hot. She's in Yvonne Strahovski class (or Yvonne is in Morgan's class).

Totally...I don't care that she's had more work done on her than a 1977 Ford Pinto, she's HOT.
Chuck rocks and I hope it sticks around a lot longer.
Good point about the CIA pay and benefits...Chuck's getting the shaft!

OK, I know she's likely made several plastic surgeons very rich, but damn, is there a hotter 58-year old woman on the planet than Morgan Fairchild?
I thought the solution to Casey's problem was just a little obvious at the start when he could not find his center calm. It took half a second to figure out that he has no center calm, just more center anger that he should be channeling. Good thing Chuck figured that out as well of course, but it was too blatantly telegraphed.

Chuck is going to find his dad and the dad will have disappeared because he is a spy. Chuck is fun, but it's pretty predictable.

Hands-down my favorite line of the night! I love this show so much & can always let the predictability factor that happens here & there. I do have to admit my 2nd favorite part of this show is reading the things that other people pick up on that I might have missed. I did get the Karate Kid thing but missed out on a couple others. Thanks everyone!
