(S05E09) "We're going to protect our son." - Lynette to Tom
Two weeks ago, we were treated with what was supposed to be an important episode for ABC's Desperate Housewives, special effects and story-wise. No matter if we enjoyed the episode or not, it did set some wheels in motion. So after such an episode, I expected this week's installment to continue on the path set forth by "City on Fire." I wanted the detectives to bring in some people for questioning and make an arrest sooner rather than later, I hoped to see Dave try to wrap up loose ends so to not be accused and expected him to make a bigger move on Mike, I thought that there would be more drama for Porter and Anne. In short: I expected action. Sadly, the episode was a letdown.
What troubles me more about "Me and My Town" is that the storyline that entertained me the most this week was Carlos and Gaby's. If you've been reading my reviews, you know that I'm not a fan of the couple so saying that they were the best part of the episode for me is saying a lot about the rest of the episode!
What I enjoyed about the Solis' storyline this week was their struggle with Carlos possibly getting his sight back. For Gaby this was a sweet and sour news. Sweet because Carlos would be seeing again and sour because he would see what she has become: a soccer mom. Her struggle to get back in shape, culminating into her being in pain and finally opening up to Carlos about being afraid he would be disappointed in her, was interesting to watch. Even if Gaby still wants her model body and sometimes still thinks like she used to when the series started, you can see that she grew a lot. I prefer this new Gaby and hope that, if Carlos gets his sight back and gets a more paying job, that she doesn't goes back to her old self.
Watching Carlos list all of the things he could finally see (or see again) was like watching a kid enter a candy store. It was really touching to hear him say that he could finally see his daughters for the first time in his life. I truly hope they show us Carlos finally seeing his daughters when he regain his sight (come on, you know the surgery will work!). Carlos also showed he grew up a lot in the past five years when he told Gaby when he knew he wanted to marry her. This story offered one of the most touching Desperate Housewives scenes so far this season and let's hope there are more in store like this one.
The most important storyline of the night was surely that of Lynette being on a mission to protect her son. The way she told Tom that they were going to protect their son makes me think that she may even be willing to do some illegal things to save Porter. Thanks to the magic of TV, we know that Porter is not at fault but the detectives don't know that, so Lynette and Tom will need to work together to see their son through this.
Throughout the episode, Dave looked like he was truly affected by the fire and its repercussions (7 deaths, injured, Porter falsely accused). For a second or two, I even saw myself believe he wouldn't point the finger at Porter to save himself. Of course, since Dave is, well, Dave and because he hasn't reached his goal yet, he couldn't let the detectives connect the dots to him so he lied and said he saw Porter in the back storage.
Speaking of Dave's goal, James Denton recently said in interview that Dave needs Mike either because he is Dave's target or because Dave needs information from him. So that confirms our two main theories as to why Dave said he's not done with Mike. It looks like we may not get answers quickly since Dave asked Mike to be his friend. This sounds like Dave will try to bond with Mike before making his move. That could bring us either to February or even May Sweeps!
As for the other storylines of the episode, I was only mildly amused by Orson's snoring and Susan trying to discover who Mike was dating. Nothing original came out of those storylines. However, I must say I'm happy with the fact Susan is trying to let go of Mike and gave her blessing to Mike and Katherine. I also am interested in seeing where the Doctor/Andrew relationship will go next, you can bet it will offer us some fun scenes between Bree and Andrew next week. Oh and the non surprise of the week: Anne faked her pregnancy. Lynette may have sent Anne packing but I'm sure we haven't seen the last of her.

How much do you want to bet that Gail O'Grady's character lied to Lynette about never being pregnant? Frankly I find Lynette's attitude towards her difficult to accept.

Indeed, maybe Anne lied about not being pregnant. But why do it when saying she was pregnant would end up in the Scavos helping her money-wise when the baby grows up?
As for the reasons for her lying about being pregnant, maybe she saw it as a way to keep Porter close to her and to get sympathy from Lynette and Tom and help to get away from her husband?

Isabelle, I think there could have been a couple of reasons for Anne lying. There may no longer be a baby - either an abortion or more likely a miscarriage after her beating - and Anne is trying to change Lynette's perception of her from "victim" to "manipulative bitch."
More likely though is that she is pregnant and that taking financial support - or any kind of support - from Lynette puts her back into a subordinate relationship. She's getting away from that sort of relationship by leaving her abusive husband so she's not going to go back into the same sort of relationship - albeit not a violent relationship - with someone else who will have control over her. I don't know if she'll try to contact Porter again; I doubt it, if only because of the repercussions if Lynette finds out. I think she'll try to make it on her own with a little extra steel in her backbone. What I think is more likely is that once Porter discovers that she's gone he'll go looking for her. Who knows what will happen then.

I was really annoyed by the "sitcom snoring storyline" they threw upon poor Bree and Orson. Really? This is the best they could come up with? It played like a recycled "Yes, Dear" only not as funny.
As for Gaby and Carlos, I totally agree with your assessment. In the first season, I hated these two. They were shallow, poorly written, and the worst actors on the series. Now, they're the only ones who show any depth of character. I am surprised how much better Eva Longoria has become over the years. I think she's done a great job playing a harried mom, and really don't want to see her go back to being a spoiled, selfish diva.

Hi fellow DH fans! I happened to really enjoy the show last night!! :) Just as I do every week, and I look forward to it all the time! I agree, that we probably haven't seen the last of Anne on the show... she will probably pop up somewhere, and I don't think she's done with Porter yet... she will probably contact him somehow, against Lynette's warning, and Porter will then find out that Lynette lied to him that night he asked his Mom if she happened to know where Anne might have been, after he was finally open & honest with her, pouring his heart out, saying that he's been trying to get in contact with her, but she hasn't been answering her phone calls, Emails, etc... and then Lynette said to him that from now on, they NEED to be HONEST and NEVER LIE to each other ever again!! Then, he asked her about Anne, and SHE LIED to HIM! I was like, "Uh-Oh!!!!"
Then, onto Gabby with her weight issue and making the girls eat that fish stuff.... too funny! That was a funny scene, I was ROFL'ing!! I wouldn't have eaten it, either!! Forget THAT!! :) YUCK! Gross! But I can see Gabby's point of view, that she's bound and determined to look her best, just in case Carlos does regain his sight 100%. That would be MY main concern as well, if I were in her shoes, I would be freaking out, if I were her and I let myself go that much after 5 years, and my hubby went blind... but then again, he's a masseuse, and she should know that he can FEEL, ya know... he should be able to FEEL her, if she's grown THAT large, if you know what I mean... but then again, this is all in TV-LAND!! :) Literally! I really FEEL for Gabby, in her current situation, and not having a lot of time to lose MEGA-WEIGHT before Carlos recovers from his eye surgery and maybe regains his sight.
I simply DON'T like DAVE AT ALL. I don't know what it is about him, but I just DON'T LIKE HIM. I wish they would get him OFF of the show. He's EVIL and he doesn't belong on there. He's a terrible actor, as well! I can't wait until his wife (for the life of me, I can't remember what her name is on the show, but it's Nicolette Sheridan, the actress), anyway... SHE needs to GET A CLUE about her "new hubby"... I thought it was pretty comical, the line she said last night, "I'm a REALLY good judge of character!!" I started LOL'ing bigtime on THAT one!! Yeah, DUNCE, you married an ex-CON or whatever, and you're a REAL winner, lady!! HAHA!! Great judge of character!! LoL!! I CANNOT BELIEVE that Dave went to the detectives at the hospital and told them that he remembered seeing Porter Scavo coming out of the back room that night... what a dirty you know what!!! If I could only get my hands on him!!! Lying you know what!! Grrrrrrrr!
I really did miss seeing Mrs. McClusky on the show this week! I think the addition of Lily Tomlin (from "9 To 5" with Dolly Parton!) is a great choice, and I would have LOVED to have seen the two of them still working on checking DAVE out, and seeing if they came up with any additional information on him, hoping they would have. I'm DYING to know more about the Dave situation, and just WHY he's even on Wisteria Lane in the first place, and what brought him there, what his intentions are, and what his whole point is, in the first place. I just can't figure him out, and that bothers me. There's got to be some big storyline surrounding him or something, but we probably won't find out until the very end of the season, that's my guess.
I DON'T like Orson AT ALL. He's TOO STUFFY for me, and he's just an OLD FART. I just don't like him as an actor, never liked him at all, and wish he would get the heck off the show, period. I DO like Bree (Marcia Cross), who is a wonderful actress, who was also on Melrose Place, and did a wonderful job there as well... I didn't really enjoy the storyline about Orson's stupid snoring, that was pretty boring, in my honest opinion; a waste of air time. That could have been better used on MIKE AND SUSAN, in my opinion.
I would LOVE to see Mike and Susan get back together! Mike and Katherine just DON'T MAKE THE PART, in my book. They make a very ODD-looking couple, I believe. I don't know. I just REALLY think that Mike is a HOT looking actor, a VERY, VERY GOOD actor, and Teri Hatcher (Susan), is a wonderful actress, and I truly enjoy the two of them together... I have heard this from many other people as well, so it's not just me.... I've read it elsewhere.... everyone rooting for Mike and Susan.... I was devastated when the 5-year "forward" came up, only to find that Susan and Mike were "no more". They sure were GOOD together, and they kept the screen steamy, and they were always happy together; I would have LOVED to have seen the two of them together, raising their little son, as parents! THAT would have been GREAT! WHY did the writers and such have to RUIN it for us/them?? They totally had the chemistry, bigtime!! NOT Katherine and Mike, NO WAY!! It HAS to be Mike and Susan FOREVER!!!! Susan NEEDS to go to Mike, in my opinion, and tell him she never really fell out of love with him, like Bree was suggesting she do, and let out ALL her true feelings to Mike -- He certainly will understand her, afterall, they have a mutual love for each other, and a son together.... I'm almost certain that Mike will give her a second chance; he's just that kind of a guy... and OH, he's just SOOOOOO romantic!! What a great KEEPER he is!! WoW, if I could just have a guy like Mike... I don't understand WHY Susan made the stupid phone call to Katherine like she did, and told her it's OK and she doesn't mind that she dates Mike, and to just be good to him cause he's a good guy. WHY would she do such a thing, when she STILL has such feelings for her ex? I just don't understand it!!??!!! That was mistake #1!!!! She should NOT have made that phone call at all!!
Anyway... I hope we get some more comments here... it's nice to read what others have to say about the show! I just found this website a little while ago! Take care and GOD BLESS! :) REEBEERENEE

this was a fun episode, many storylines I didn't like but the overall feeling was good, and I too loved Gaby and Carlos this week (finally!!). Nothing much happened, I am really looking forward to see Andrew with his new boyfriend, and how Bree will react to that.

I got the feeling that Anne lied about not being pregnant. I think she's afraid of Lynnette to a degree, and saying she's not pregnant would be safer than saying she was. But then again, why wasn't anyone asking whether the baby was ok after she was beaten?

OK, My biggest question was where was Susan's boyfriend during the questioning? He could easily clear everything up when he talks to the police. He saw Dave come out of the room where the fire was started, and then he was locked in the bathroom. It just seems sloppy that it wasnt mentioned. It was kind of frustrating. As for the new Gabby and Carlos-BRING BACK THE VAPID SELF ABSORBED COUPLE they were! It was much more fun. We can see a regular caring couple through any of the other people on the show-this show is supposed to be fun and campy. Bummer if they are all soft and sweet now.
PS-Reebe... No one is going to read a novel of a post. Cut it in 1/8 the size next time

Except if you want vapid and self-absorbed, you don't have to look further than any of the other housewives or couples in the show.
Gabrielle and Carlos have been great with one another through their bad times and good times. It's very refreshing. And as sweet as their moment was in this episode, I remember other moments like that throughout seasons past with them. When they're good and sweet, they're magical.
Looking forward to seeing Andrew with his new doctor boyfriend. Bree's reactions are probably not to be missed.

As for where was Jackson. I think this episode was shot when the actor was in an accident. They had to rewrite and reshoot some scenes. So it's possible they had to tweak the storyline because the actor was still in the hospital.

Agree with Maria - REEBE your post is too long for me to get all the way through (very ADD online here!)
I do believe that Jackson wasn't in the episode because the actor was just in that motorcycle accident. Does the timing fit?
I enjoyed the episode, but really only for Dave and the Solis'. I really hope they make Nicollette a regular again by the way.

I've said this before, but Lynette is probably the most manipulative wife on this series. She lies with no apparent remorse, she is controlling of her both her husband and children, and more often than not she's just a cruel person. Regardless of her motives, I truly dislike the character. However, I love Felicity Huffman; she is by far the best actress on the series. She plays Lynette to the hilt, which is what makes her unlikable character so much fun to watch.
As for the rest of the episode -- boring! It's a shame to see Dana Delany, another exceptional actress, wasted on this series. We all know Mike and Susan are going to end up together again; Susan is so not ready to let go. A totally wasted plot line designed to give Delany and Denton something to do for the time being.

Hey, wasn't somebody supposed to die in the fire??? Big promo that
one of the Wisteria regulars would perish in the fire.. then,
NOTHING. Hello????
Oh, and REEBBEEEEE, Lily Tomlin is widely known for so much more than
'9 to 5' -- like her award winning one woman show on Broadway.. And
don't write so much, nobody's gonna read a post that long.

Yeah, spoilers made it sound like a major character would die in the fire. It ended up being the doctor who can merely count as a recurring character.
