Apparently ABC is weirded out by Izzie having sex with a ghost too. At the very least, they certainly are curious.
According to EW, the alphabet network has started testing audiences with a potential Grey's Anatomy love story between Izzie and the very, very, very not alive Denny Duquette.
Now I know focus groups aren't cheap and since it's Thanksgiving Day, I'm in a very giving mood. So if anyone from ABC is reading this - let me save you some money:
This story BLOWS.
I mean, honestly - what is Shonda Rhimes thinking? This isn't Ghost Whisperer. This isn't The X-Files. And last I checked, Grey's Anatomy doesn't feature any characters who are werewolves, goblins, fairies, or vampires. Denny Duquette is dead and the only way that Izzie is going to have any sort of sex with him is if she goes and digs up his rotten, stinky, decayed body.
Even worse, now that Shonda Rhimes has come out and said that Izzie doesn't have a brain tumor, I can't think of any outcome to this story that will justify it and be satisfying.
However, in a season where ratings have been tumbling and fans were already upset about Brooke Smith's firing, I'm sure network execs are probably willing to consider just about anything to boost viewership... including sex/love/relationships with ghosts or whatever the hell Denny is.
Hopefully this doesn't go on much longer. You just watch though - that randomly selected focus group probably has an 85% saturation of necrophiliacs. Granted, Denny isn't a corpse (well... he is I guess), but I imagine that if knocking boots with an actual dead guy does the trick for you, then fooling around with his spirit works too.
Currently, Jeffrey Dean Morgan is contracted to appear in episodes through February and assuming the focus groups give favorable reviews, that stint could presumably be extended.
You know what can't be extended? Denny's man bits - because he's dead.

Uh huh, you know there's still a chance that somehow Izzie will meet Denny's long lost twin, or just someone who looks soooo alike. Or maybe they're planning a little crossover with Supernatural:-)

He's dead on Weeds too.
SPOILER (but not really since you find out in the opening minutes)
He's also dead in Watchmen.

How can they possibly need a focus group to tell them what any person with a brain knows? Anything involving/extending the Denny/Izzie storyline ESPECIALLY SINCE HE'S DEAD is a mistake and is killing the show.
also ridiculous: the interns ripping an appendix out of one of their own, but we'll deal with that later.

I'm not gonna lie. I LOVE JDM. I even loved Denny.
But I can't believe that ABC is spending budget on TESTING the Denny/Izzie relationship. This isn't ABC Daytime, where you can get away with a ghost storyline. This isn't Supernatural. Why the hell couldn't they bring him back from the dead on SN, instead?
It's primetime, folks, and for whatever reason, GA continues to perform for them...even after George/Izzie. LET DENNY DIE already.

I couldn't agree more. Personally, I'm not a JDM fan, but I really liked the Denny storyline back in the day -- you know, when he was alive. I've read many times that Shonda Rhimes is in love with JDM as an actor and is always looking for ways to bring him back, but like the rest of us she needs to move on. It's a waste a two talented actors.

Uggghhh...keep the paranormal stuff off GA...please! Just focus on the medicine and stick to the formula they had in season 1 and they'll be okay. Keep doing what they're doing in this season and ABC will face the same problems NBC is having with Heroes.

I love him...I want him to be him. I want it all to have been a dream...something, anything to keep him on the show. Yes. I agree the ghost angle is a bit off for a prime time show focusing on drama, but stranger things have happened. Its all fantasy, and I'm open to where the writers want to take me.
I don't care if its realistic as long as it's a good story and my characters remain true to themselves. Dear God...I hope doctors aren't really like those on Grey's, and I hope the five second rule really doesn't work on heart like it does on an M&M, but it makes for fun viewing! Unlike everyone else who wants to live their lives and then come home and watch someone else live theirs, I'll keep my television fantastic, please.

Why is it paranormal? Does it have to be his "ghost" or could it be Izzie externalizing her grief as a hallucination? And then falling in love with her own creation and having to let it go in the end.
I haven't watched Grey's Anatomy in a loong time, so I don't know if I'm completely off base or not, but this seems like it could be a great way to examine Izzie's personality -- while keeping a much loved character (and buzz-worthy actor) on the show for a while -- given the write deft with the teleplay pen.

You're right, this storyline BLOWS. And now I hear Private Practice people will be coming over to Grey's. What the heck? I don't want to see Addison on Grey's. Stay on your own show. I'd really love to know what Rhimes and these writers are thinking, because clearly they have lost it. All the storylines on Grey's suck.

This story line does blow, but the majority of my female friends don't realize it since they think it's so sweet and heartwarming, then proceed to crying.
I think we are going to find out Izzie is a schizophrenic and that Denny has been manifested as one of the multiple personalities. Eventually, someone will notice she is talking to herself and not making a porno in her bedroom.

That theory would make sense if Schizophrenia manifested multiple personalities, but it doesn't, it manifests as hallucinations. Dissociative Identity Disorder is the multiple personality disorder (formerly called multiple personality disorder.)

Wow, there have been alot of storylines on Grey's that people should have complained about, THIS isn't one of them. Izzie and Denny (imagined or not) are the most touching relationship these writers have ever had the good fortune of writing. The fact is, the chemistry between JDM and Katie Heigl is magical. If she is creating this relationship in her head because its more appealing that any of the other men she has been presented with, then so be it. It makes her HAPPY....which is more that I can say for anyone else on Greys! Besides, who knows......maybe Izzie is the one who is near death or in a coma and Denny is the one who really is alive! Izzie is living in an alternate reality. Who knows what the writers have in store.
Enjoy the on screen magic that is Izzie and Denny and lets see where it goes. Lord knows Grey's Anatomy has done ALOT of other less than real storylines. Oh, did you all forget that its just a TV show......just entertainment? Would we really want Grey's to refect REAL LIFE......because, honestly......why would anyone watch?
Oh and have you notice the ratings.......yes, UP significantly.....things that make you go Humm

I didn't see anyone else say my thoughts, so I'll chime in.
People who say the story line blows are slightly wrong. It's not that this story blows... it's that it's creepy and impossible. And impossibly creepy.
Denny is DEAD. I love JDM as well (big fan of Supernatural), but GA is (more or less) a reality-based show, as people pointed out. This isn't a Supernatural crossover. This is just CREEPY.
The first few times he showed up, I could pass it off as Izzie's sub-conscious. Even when she talked to him, it's still plausible. But touching and sex? WTF?
This is just bad and getting worse... And the real shame is, up until Denny re-surfaced, I thought GA was finally getting back on track.

They killed off Denny and then realized just how loved he was by the fans so they're desperately trying to get back ratings by having return. Completely sad, see through, and ridiculous. I'm glad I stopped watching this ages ago.

This show has strayed so far from what it started out as, and the story lines have become so absurd(I still watch for some reason though); why not just have Izzie ask Grey for help resurrecting Denny.
Then Grey could find a secret journal from her mother with directions on how to do it somewhere in the house. But Grey is afraid to try, but Christina finds out and while the two argue George stumbles in.
Izzie cries, and the 3 agree to help.
They find a secret area of the hospital and proceed with the resurrection. Denny is back, and the show is now sci-fi/soap and everyone is happy. Now that the most absurd is out of the way, the writers can continue doing what they've been doing and no one will even bat an eye.

There's a simple way to solve this "bad plot" problem. Just write a few letters to ABC saying you're a Christian and you're pissed off that they're offending your religion by showing a dead character resurrected, as only Jesus can do that.
The "pissed off Christian" letters worked so well at ending the lame lesbian storyline between Callie and Hahn that it caused them to fire Brooke Smith and kick her off the show completely (which really bothers me).
Nothing freaks the networks out more than pissed off religious people who say they're offended at something the network is showing on its airwaves.
I hate religious people and I wish they'd keep their opinions to themselves. But in the meantime, we may as well use them, and the networks' fear of them, in a positive way and end this lame dead denny storyline real quick.
So, start writing the letters, fellow pissed off Christians. ABC is, in effect, saying Denny Duquette = Jesus Christ. How else can he be resurrected? Blasphemy! Blaslphemy I say!

Amusing but it wouldn't work. Pissed off Christians didn't end the worst lesbian coupling in tv history. The utter lack of chemistry and the terrible character of Hahn did. Face it if they wanted to avoid offending Christians then they never would have gone with the gay storyline to begin with. Hell half their storylines would never occur. Not that that would be a bad thing cause clearly no one with any common sense is in charge here.

Lool, i think that they got the gay story out... well that gay couple anyway... because the chemistry wasnt good... i really didnt see it...
i dont think ABC would change their show because of some religious letters...
Now about Izzie and Denny, i must say that Katie and JDM do have chemistry, but i think that this story is too crazy... i mean... This is not "Ghost anatomy" ¬¬'... I used to love that couple, and i was sooo sad when he died... but when we finally see Izzie and Alex back together... HAPPY!... bam... Denny is back ¬¬'... so they are making me hate him... i mean, Alex is finally a fine man, and they do that?!!!... Izzie said she wasnt going to go crazy, and i think she did!!!
i think Denny's storyline should be written off... because if Izzie doesnt have a tumor... i dont see how this can be happening... and if she is going to go mad... i hope it will be agood story... cuz GA is getting ridiculous, not only with Denny's story line, but with the interns too!... oh, and they better not get Katie out of the show... or anybody else... cuz thats not ok!

I find the storyline of the interns hacking each other up down in the basement more bizarre than anything else going on on Grey's. Ghost sex...bring it on! Ha!
