(S03E10) We've reached the climax of this volume of Heroes. With the coming of the eclipse the first time, abilities manifested in our plethora of characters, or at least some of them. Or at least it was a catalyst of some importance. Now Claire is apparently a catalyst of some importance. Because the writers aren't sure how to make her anything other than kind of annoying, but she's the "hot chick" so they have to keep her. But that's another issue. It's time for another eclipse, and this time what havoc will it wreak?
Maybe it can make Peter whine less. Or Claire be less useless of a character. Or Matt more important of a character. Or Mohinder go back to normal or just die already. Things were definitely turned sideways this episode, and I think it was in a good way. I know all they naysayers will keep saying nay, many of them doing so without even watching the episodes (which makes their opinions irrelevant), but things are getting on track. Now if they can just avoid a disappointing conclusion to this volume, I'll be thrilled powerless.
It did get some people to put out there some of the feelings we've all been feeling for awhile. Peter was able to yell at Nathan for being a pawn of his father, and everyone really. Nathan was able to yell at Peter for being a bitch. And Noah yelled at Claire for being a big baby. She's been acting like a spoiled brat all season and he totally called her on it. But then she went and got all sentimental and took a bullet for daddy, so it's back to love love.
When the eclipse hit and everybody lost their abilities, it came down to their personalities and inner strength to drive the plotlines. We got a chance to see how much we would or wouldn't like everybody if they were just themselves and we had to consider them all as regular people. As it turns out, many of them relied on their abilities as a crutch, like Sylar and Elle, who were easily handled by Noah single-handedly, unless you want to count a blonde bodyshield as assistance.
The whole thing was so touchy-feely, from Noah and Claire's bonding moments to Matt's mushy cliche-ridden speech to Daphne to that ending with Sylar saying that he can damn well take what he wants when he wants and planting one right on Veronica Mars' kisser. We even had a feel good moment when Mohinder plopped out of his disgusting cocoon and looked more like the guy we used to like way back in Season One.
If ever there was a time to take down Arthur Petrelli, this is it. Unfortunately, a guy like Mohinder isn't going to be able to because he's kind of a wimp and Arthur's sons are trapped in Haiti for the time being. Elle and Sylar have a lot more on their hands than each other with HRG right outside the window and the rest of the gang is stuck in Lawrence, KS. Presumably powers will return, because they haven't changed the name of the show to Humans, but it may not be until after the eclipse passes, and then Arthur's would return, too.
It was fun seeing Breckin Meyer and Seth Green as the comic shop proprieters, and the play with the 9th Wonders comic cover mimicking real life. I genuinely have no idea where they're going to go from here with any of these plotlines, and for that I'm genuinely glad.
If Claire died from her wounds, I wouldn't be horribly upset but then maybe I'm a cold-hearted bastard. A nice ass and toned abs only gets you so far in my book. Her character has oeen the object of some other subject since day one. She's always someone else's goal, rather than significant in her own right. Makes her kind of hard to root for as an individual. I am hoping her mom shows up soon, though, and holds up her hand to show off her cool flame and then looks even stupider than usual when nothing happens.

Better episode than most this season, but still tons of Questions:
With Isaac dead, who's drawing the 9th Wonders comic?
Why is Mohinder acting like he's never used his cocoon power before? He seems genuinely surprised by it...
What the heck is EVERYONE's motivation? I think this is my big problem with this season - it has never been explained WHY any given character is doing anything.
For example: Why is Elle going from Company Girl to scaredy cat working with Clair to loving Sylar to wanting to save Sylar to causing Sylar to kill the rental car guy?
Why is Claire so adamant about helping the Company even though her father told her to stay home, and even though she HATES having her powers to begin with and just wants to be normal.
Why do they think the eclipse gave them powers when we saw Nathan fly (the accident with his ex-wife) well before the eclipse? (and for that matter, where are his kids?)
Why did Peter want Sylar's powers so badly in the first episode?
Why is Parkman such a P****y this season - no explanation of his love for Daphne and vice versa. And where's his wife!? And his father - didn't Parkman send his father into his own little world in his mind? If so, how did Arthur get him out?
i could go on and on... can anyone help answer these questions?

(I posted this below when I meant to reply). Cdawg, Parkman's father is the guy who was giving Nathan and Daphne those visions of Linderman, and Arthur snapped his neck and killed him a few weeks ago.
There WAS an eclipse the morning after Heidi's accident; the reflection of an eclipse can be seen in a hospital window when the doctor is telling Nathan about Heidi's condition. Nathan's kids are with Heidi.
I'm pretty sure it was stated that Parkman and his wife are separated now.
The writers stated in a Q&A at comicbookresources.com that Seth Green and Breckin Meyer's characters will explain how 9th Wonders is still in print in Part 2. They are also going to have a theory that explains how an eclipse can affect the physiology of specials.
I think Mohinder was more surprised that he was suddenly back to normal than he was by the cocoon.

I've been wondering that for a couple episodes now.
I found it very hard to feel suspense in this episode when they showed us everything that was going to happen in the sketches in the very beginning.

The best part of the show was watching everyone’s reactions when they lost their powers.

Elle was only a company girl to try to merit her father's love and approval, which she never got. She was into Sylar from the beginning - after turning him into a monster, she backed off, but when he started playing nice - and then took away her pain - she fell head over heels for him. The whole wanting him to kill again thing is odd - but its a rebellion against the Company, which she sees as an extension of her father. She can't rebel against him, since he's dead. But she can screw with the Company since she has their best weapon under her spell, (not a Heroes power - a woman power).
I'd have to go back to the first episode to explain Peter's need for Sylar's power, but there was a perfectly good explanation for it. Something about saving the world. Stopping the everybody-has-super-powers-drug from hitting the streets, and thus leading to the end of the world - or at least the nuking of a small town.
Nathan's powers are artificial, and the Company's founders all had their powers decades before the eclipse. The eclipse doesn't cause the powers - it's a genetic thing tied to Adrenalin, that's been explained. But the eclipse obviously effects those powers, just as the moon affects the tide, and some say more babies are conceived under a full moon, etc. The eclipse has been the symbol of the show since the beginning, it kind of needed to make a comeback.
Claire doesn't want to help the company - she wants to stop the Villians. She wants to use her powers for good. It has nothing to do with the Company - she just wants to fight bad guys. As an immortal, Wolverine-esqe healing machine - fighting bad guys is a no-brianer. She just sucks at fighting, and so her dad, (and other people) are or have tried to help her develop that skill. Get her into a gym with some hand-to-hand, martial arts training, and weapons training, and you've got an unstoppable killing machine. Kinda like the version of Claire that killed Peter in the future. She's sick of being a victim. She's sick of other people putting their very-much-not bullet-proof lives on the line to save her, when she doesn't need saving, since she can't die. And the whole "I can't feel pain - I must not be human" thing is really screwing with her head, too.
Parkman's ex-wife was a slut - she was cheating on him with his best friend. She's long gone - what show have you been watching. He loves Daphne because he saw that he loved her in the future, and he desperately wants to love her. Heck, she's a lot hotter than his ex, and she's got super powers. And she saved his life from Arthur. That develops some feelings I'm sure.
All Arthur had to do to save Parkman's dad is send the Hatian to get him. That would have ended both Parkman's power, and his dad's. So whichever one trapped Parkman's dad, would have been ended, and thus setting him free.
Nathan's kids? That I don't have a good answer for. I think that's one of those questions the writers don't want you to ask. Like what happened to Aunt Rachel and little sister Judy Winslow on Family Matters. They just disappeared without explanation, and you, simple TV viewer, are supposed to forget about it. Or Richie's older brother on Happy Days. They are characters who don't work, people don't like, cause too many problems by existing, or whose actors want too much money, control, whatever, and are therefore swept under the rug. Nathan having kids would cause too many problems for his Right-Wing supporters who want someone who strongly believes in God. If he's religious, why did he divorce his wife? Why is he with this blonde woman now? Why isn't he raising his kids? How can a single father take care of his kids and be a Senator? And for us - how can he be a single father and be flying around the world fighting bad guys? It's just better to forget he has kids. He obviously has.

Maybe they should have an eclipse every few weeks.
Everybody spoke to one another. Characters expressed themselves.
Cool powers bring 'em in: good characterization & storytelling will bring 'em back.
Fingers crossed...

Heroes has taught me to never try to fix a problem, or another one will appear worse than the previous.
Before now I was always ridiculed for taking that approach, but now thanks to Heroes' popularity I can hold my head up high.

I agree with cdawg: what is the purpose this season? No one seems to have any kind of plan or reason for living.
Also? You forgot one other asset Claire has: a nice rack.

Methinks you haven't seen enough 'nice racks' as of late to say that she's got a nice rack, but then again, I am a big boob fan in both senses of the word.

As I already replied to cdawg, next week, Seth Green and Breckin Meyer's characters will explain how 9th Wonders is still in print. It probably amounts to the real-life fact that comics are often finished far, far ahead of schedule. It works because, despite being on the air for 2 years, less than a year has passed in the series' timeline since the pilot. Season 1 took place in Oct/Nov 2006, Season 2 took place four months later (Nathan was shot on March 20, 2007), and Season 3 picked up right where Season 2 left off, meaning it's still spring 2007 for the characters and Isaac would only need to have had four or five months' worth of comics lined up before he died for there to still be new episodes. Plus, in the Season 1 finale he gave a fan his sketchbook, and the writers have said they may use that sketchbook to keep Isaac's drawings in play if need be.

The characters without their powers makes for a much more interesting show. Hopefully they can keep that human part about them once they get their powers back.

josh i get how Parkman's dad was just killed. My question was - didn't PArkman already relegate his father to a life in his own head last season? How did he escape that?

Ah, that's a better question, one I was asking myself. The writers have stated in online Q&A's that Maury was locked up in Level 5 and escaped during the breakout we saw. In fact, it was easy to miss, but last season, following Maury's nightmare imprisonment, Matt Parkman was looking over that group photo of the company founders and while most were labeled "dead," Maury was labeled "incarcerated" so the company got him locked up by that point. I guess we're left to assume that Parkman let his father out of his nightmare once he was securely locked up in Level 5.
Only problem then is that Nathan's visions of Linderman this season PRECEDED the Level 5 breakout by one episode, so... how was Maury already working for Arthur at that point? THAT is a legitimate continuity error, but not a show-ruining one, IMO.

Parkman was able to escape his fathers mind trap last season, so it only stands to reason that Maury, who is far more experienced with his powers than Matt is, was able to escape Matt's mind trap.

Either the writers are lazy, or they genuinely don't give a shit anymore. The continuity problems on this show are making it hard to watch at this point.
When did Ando learn to speak English? How may issues of 9th Wonder did that guy have in the bank before he died? Since when did super powers (other than the healing power) cure chronic disease? And seriously ... when the bloody hell did Ando learn to speak English!?

Ando has been speaking English since season 1. Hiro used Ando frequently to communicate with people. Remember when Ando showed up at Niki's place thinking she'd help because they had chatted online? Ando was able to communicate with the cops just fine. When Peter called to tell Hiro that Future Hiro said they're supposed to meet, Ando was their inbetween on the phone.
And as for 9th Wonders, as I explained in comments above, in series timeline, Isaac died in November 2006 and it is now only a few months later (Nathan was shot on March 20, 2007 and Season 3 picked up right where they left off, resulting in the awkward situation of having it still be spring 2007 on a show airing in fall 2008). Isaac only needed four or five months' worth of comics done at the time he died for there to be new issues finished, and comics are often finished long ahead of their release date.
