It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: The Nightman Cometh (season finale) - VIDEOS

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: The Nightman Cometh
(S04E13) "Can I do it naked?" - Frank

It's been just a little over a year since "Dayman" took the world by storm (that may be an exaggeration) in the season three It's Always Sunny ep "Sweet Dee's Dating a Retarded Person." Everyone knows the lyrics, there are tee-shirts, cell-phone ringtones, and now Charlie has taken his opus to a new level - musical.

This entire season of It's Always Sunny has really expanded the show's creative limits. From episodes like "Who Pooped the Bed?" to "The Gang Cracks the Liberty Bell," there have been a lot of different concepts for episodes that never would have been tried early on in the show when an audience was still being built. "The Nightman Cometh" can be added to that list as well.

Charlie has written a musical. How he found the time, willpower, and ability to overcome his severe illiteracy to even complete one page is beyond me, but the end result was pretty damn funny. Watching him transform from his wacky self to an even wackier over-the-top director was hilarious as he kept spouting slightly incorrect clichés at everyone. ("Can you go take a five please?")

Thoughts -
  • Artemis assisting Charlie made perfect sense, but I was surprised she didn't fight Dee for some of her lines (or her part) given their history. If you don't know what I mean, watch this video.
  • Everyone in the cast has really good voices, huh?
  • "Boy's soul." Say it five times fast. Sounds like "boy's hole" every time.
  • Mac's cat eyes were my favorite part. And of course - Frank had a guy.
  • Maybe I missed something, but how exactly does The Nightman (Mac) molesting The Little Boy (Dennis) turn the boy into The Dayman? Major plot hole... not that it matters in Charlie's head.
  • Frank's troll was named Antonio! I'm not sure why that's funny, but it is...
  • I loved how The Waitress was the only once in the packed audience who looked appalled. Everyone else was clapping and thought it was great. Plus, she didn't seem aroused by Dennis in his Dayman costume which was a little odd.
  • I think this should become an It's Always Sunny tradition. Charlie should write a musical every season from here on out.

The there was the end. Personally, I thought it was kind of sad. Charlie has been pining over (and stalking) The Waitress since the very beginning of the series and this was the only way he could drum up the courage to ask for her hand in marriage and she said no. Of course, I don't blame her, but it was still sad. A little. OK, not really. But good for Charlie.

Oh, and in case you haven't seen where this all came from, here you go - last night's musical version and the original "Dayman" that Charlie and Dennis came up with last season...
