(S05E09) "Who's making a porno movie in Izzie's room?" - Derek
I think I speak for the rest of America when I ask, why the F is Denny still hanging around? It's like one big unending cross-over episode with The X-Files. He and Izzie were making out, touching, kissing... having sex? What?!? And he just keeps blabbing "I'm here for you." Care to elaborate, Mr. Duquette?
Denny is dead(!), and you know what the worst part is? Shonda Rhimes confirmed that Izzie doesn't have some wacko brain tumor! Got any other theories? I give up, but I tell ya - this had better clear up fast, because it has become by far, the most distracting, unrealistic, and annoying thing about this show, and it's been going on for three weeks now! I honestly can't think of how this could have a satisfying ending. Pull a Hahn and just have him be gone next week. Please. Sloan having a relationship with a barcalounger would be more enjoyable than this.
OK, moving on to that crop of idiot interns. Maybe I'm just forgetting, but was Meredith and everyone else this bad when they were interns? I don't think so.
It's not the interns operating on Sadie and goofing up that has me annoyed. It's what happened afterward when Yang blew up on Meredith after Webber found out. I'm sick of her. Granted, Cristina may have moments of sensitivity and seem like a nice person, but she isn't. 95% of the time she is a B-I-T-C-H, looking out for only one person - herself.
She had one line that really got me. That quip about how all the residents would have been to blame had Sadie died. I disagree. Granted, all the interns had a role, but the interns who initially started the "I cut you, you cut me club" were Yang's interns because she wasn't teaching them jack. As far we saw, Mer, Alex, George, and Izzie were teaching their interns. Yang didn't, and while Meredith didn't exactly stick up for Cristina in front of the chief, she also didn't mention that little tidbit either. These moments where Cristina comes flying off the handle with the holier than thou rants are bogus. I hope Hunt knows what he's getting into with her.
More thoughts on "The Midnight Hour":
-
I would never volunteer to get an epidural.
-
I'm glad Izzie got to see Alex defend her to that jerk intern, and that was probably the driving force when she picked Alex over Denny at the end, but - dare I ask - what happens if Denny gets his feelings hurt? Leaves, hopefully.
-
Just when I think the b-stories can't get any funnier, we get a husband who essentially needs to crap down his wife's throat to save her. Not quite, I mean there were tubes involved, but still. Fecal transplant - hilarious.
-
Now that George knows Lexie is in love with him, I assume that'll go somewhere. I wish it wouldn't, but it probably will.
-
What's with Sadie cutting herself again? What's wrong with her?
-
I wonder if we're going to see Bailey try something new since surgeries are boring for her now. I don't know what she'd do, though.
For the time being, I don't see Grey's getting much better. There's a lot broken and nothing is getting fixed. To top it off, so much of this season has focused on "the solo surgery" and I'm just not buying it as this exciting and pivotal moment that ABC is trying to portray it as. I mean, so what? Say Meredith does a solo whatever-dectomy. Patient could live or die. Not all that much different than when any other doctor on the show is in the OR. So what's the twist going to be? If we're lucky, Denny has a heart attack and no one can save him... you know, because he's dead already!

I'm beginning to think that Denny is more a manifestation of Izzie's guilt. The line where she yelled (I'm paraphrasing a bit from memory here) "You don't get to apologize for dying because I'm the one who convinced you to let me cut the LVAD wire that killed you!" I think her grief and her guilt over killing Denny mixed wit her emotional questions about getting involved with Alex again are causing her to have some kind of dream hallucination where Denny is with her again. I think the whole "I'm here for you" cryptic bull is just a way of her subconscious stretching out her inabililty to cope with all of it.
I think the last three episodes appear to have taken place over a span of about 24-48 hours in subjective "Seattle Grace" time. Even still, its distracting to have this Denny storyline derailing the rest of the episode. Time to wrap up the distracting Denny storyline and move onto new territory.
Besides, weren't they going to kill off Hahn? Maybe its time for some other emotional crisis to rock the hospital.

the reason that Denny is still around is because Shonda Rhimes is deeply in love with the male characters she created in the show. In interviews and podcast, she giggled like a teenage school girl and talked in those long "grey's anatomy style monologue" about Denny (and McWhatever) and about the undying love between the characters.
Honestly, i don't think she can see objectively when it comes to the storyline that just don't work, even though she always defend these story as logical development for the characters.
like the whole Izzie and George fiasco before, this whole "love triangle" with Izzie/Alex/dead Denny is not working. it is distracting, and it makes Izzie seem even sillier than before.
I was actually happy to see Callie broke her nose, the way she's been acting lately with Hahn and Sloan really made me hate her even though i used to like her. This is a pretty funny episode though, largely thanks to the B-story: "No poop for you!"

I have about had it with Denny being "back" I knew that Izzie was a bit crizzy but this is going to far, and I am sorry if your girlfriend is MOANING and comes to the door SWEATY any man would go into that room to make sure she is alone. I dont know about any other woman, but my "solo sessions" dont make me look like i just worked out.
I have No idea what Denny is, a ghost, a manifestation of her guilt, a demon, a vampire, a robot, a hologram, because any of it is ridiculous and doesnt need to be on GA.
If Meredith and all the others were to go missing to do epidurals and appendectomies , Bailey would have noticed. Mer and Christina and Karev dont seem to realize thier intern shadows are gone.
The hypochondriac girl, her speech about "everytime i get a headache i think its a tumor, every time my heart beats fast i think its a heart attack" was that supposed to be a calming speech? because i would be calling psych in asap and that husband would be going "and you think this is normal?"

I'm almost done with this show. The Denny thing is about to drive me as insane as Eva. He's dead, Izzie should have been over it already. Yang also annoyed me by jumping all over Meredith for not defending her. Meredith only told the truth, so what was the big deal? The only reason I'm sticking around is to see where they go with Dr. Hunt because Kevin McKidd is one of my favorite actors.

I really can't stand the plot lines of this show. I've said that in the past.
Why are the residents not being reprimanded for not teaching their interns? Do they not care? Oh..sorry...it's Grey and Yang...so we don't mind.
Izzie spent all day with Denny (Ghost Denny...GD)...does she have to work? I still think he's there to take her to dead-world, regardless of lack of tumor. Else, this plotline goes nowhere.
And really....yet another episode of character personality switches. Little Grey taking blame for something Sadie did....doing something that her character would never do (cut open someone) and even looking at a book to verify where to cut (hello photographic memory???). Alex has become the best boyfriend ever (hello commitment issues??) Christina needs Grey to defend her (umm..hello I'm a self confident surgeon)...Callie and Bailey talking about surgery ambitions and weren't both of them Chiefs at one time? Are they still or has the real chief just taken that job back?
And really...who is Sadie? In her first episode, she just showed up...hanging out with residents....being included on resident conversations with the chief. Now she's an intern? Wouldn't people know about her beforehand?
And I don't care how "out of reality" this show is....if you're taking out appendixes in a spare room, you're fired...and possibly brought up on charges.
As much as I try to stretch my beliefs on this show...they make it impossible. Characters just can't decide on who they are....plot lines jump all over the place and dead people can be touched. (perhaps they'll commit Izzie to the insane ward) I'm assuming that the other people will find out about Izzie's dead guy sex and somehow be ok with this.

I think Grey is actually teaching her interns - it's just Yang who's not, and the reason she's not being punished is because no one knows; it's not like Webber has the time to go around to each intern and give them a test on what they've learned.

I'm also very annoyed with Denny being back.
I was already annoyed when saw him on the end of episode 01-02, but I thought, ok, this is a 'goodbye Denny', so that's ok...
But now this!
Forgetting the Denny thing, well, more ignoring then forgetting really, 'cause trying to ignore Denny is hard, but helps to enjoy the rest of the episode... Anyway, Denny aside, I thought it was a great episode!
The beginning made me think it was going to be more 'WOW', like 'From a Whisper to a Scream' or 'It's the End of the World / As We Know It'. But turned out to be not so 'WOW'.
Anyway, even thought I expected more, still, great episode.
The interns thing: Mer and the others were pretty stupid, not THAT stupid, but let's not forget they had Bailey as their resident. And she watched them WAY better than they are watching their interns. And, Sadie kinda brought the stupidity to the next level...
Christina yelling at Mer... I think it was more a 'I'm mad at you with the Sadie thing' than just 'cause Mer didn't defend her. Mer is the only friend Christina has, so I see how that could have a bigger impact on her that normally would. I hope that this makes them start teaching the interns better now...
Lexie and George: I'm a Lexie fan. Lexie is the new Izzie, lol. And I do want her to be with George. I just hope Shonda make them a drama-free (or at least less then the usual) couple. I mean, someone has to be happy on that show, right?
Speaking of happy, Mer and Derek seem to be going good... and I'll hate when Sadie mess that up. Cause it's obvious that she'll say something that will make Derek and Mer fight...
And Mer seemed to have grown a lot, which I think it's great.
Last comments:
- Sloan and that kid was very cute. That kid was very very cute, and made me cry. And Sloan with Callie was nice too...
- Hunt and Christina... that will be interesting, but they have to make him interact with the others too... get a friend or something...
...
Wow, that was a HUGE comment.

Maybe Denny is a foreshadowing that they will be killing Izzie off? Can one hope? Then the "I'm here for you" makes more sense.

i'm sorry but this episode really sealed my fate as an ex-GA fan. this show has began pissing me off when they made Callie (an Orthopaedic Resident) the Chief Resident over General Surgery, when Izzy was able to mope around until she was ready to come back after she killed Denny, when Burke was able to keep Christina by his side to do his surgeries. No program on this earth would keep its accreditation after all this. I fought through this long enough - but the fact that Christina is treating her interns the way Hawn treated her after Burke gave her so much opportunity as an intern is pissing me off. What a hypocrite. What did me in was the intern appendectomy fiasco. In the real world, not only would the interns be on probation, but so would their residents. Strangely, the only thing that didnt piss me off was Izzy's guilt about Denny and his ghostly presence. That is about the most realistic thing about this whole damn episode. I'm so done. Shonda Rimes is a joke.

This is not real life. This is Grey's Anatomy. Take it or leave it. I don't think we're all watching this show because it is just so real. If that's what you're looking for, you can head over to the Discovery Channel and watch some reality shows. I think you're the joke.

I'm not looking for something extremely realistic to the fact that its the Discovery Channel - but hell, do not insult my intelligence by making a mockery of the medical world and hospital operations. I began watching this show b/c I worked in a medical residency program directly with residents and I instantly connected to the characters The focus of the show has always been the characters - not the medicine which was what I loved. The writing of the first two seasons cannot even compare to the crap that they are feeding us. Maybe it was the writers' strike and the loose ends they are trying to tie up. Maybe it was the real-life drama of the cast - but please - allow the characters to blossom without compromising things.

Everyone keeps on complaining about how they've had enough of Grey's - that it's the last straw - so how about you all just shut up and go away then. Do what you want Denny to do and just disappear. You know how annoying an unwanted presence can be, so take a note from your own book and go away.
Personally, I liked this episode. I loved how the new residents are growing - dealing with a crisis differently to how they would have, all of that stuff, it was great. The Denny thing is strange, bizarre and utterly perplexing, I'm not sure how Shonda will solve this plot line, so I'm keen to see how she does it. That's why I will keep on watching Grey's. I watch it because I'm not there for the reality, I'm there for character progression, drama and relationships.

Thing is, we *are* fans of the show. We just don't like the direction it is taking in some respects. What's the point of a blog about a show if fans can't comment on what they do and don't like about a show?
I like the addition of Hunt. I like the character development of Sloane. I like how the Chief is taking names and kicking tail. I like how Bailey is questioning things now. I like how Yang is showing some character development. I like the dynamic Sadie is going to bring to the Mer/Der and Meridith and Christina relationships.
I don't like "Dead Denny" showing up for 5-6 episodes a season. He's dead. Move on. I want to see repercussions for the residents not teaching the interns and for "surgery club" in the spare room (and I'm sure that's coming).
Yes, this is a good show. Its got its problems, though, and I hope it gets them fixed.
Most of us wouldn't be here if, at some point, we didn't enjoy the show. Some us love everything about the show. Some us like the show, but some of the flaws (like the recurrence of Denny for me) annoy us. There may be even some of us that are just hanging on for one storyline. But I doubt there is anyone still watching that totally hates the show. Out of curiosity, how have the ratings been?

I think we all know that everyone is entitled to their opinion and if a particular group of fans voice their displeasure against a show's storyline, they have every right to comment on that here.
But Jessica is clearly out of line for directly criticizing another commenter for her opinion. I can say that because I too, criticized someone a group of fans (on TvSquad) for enjoying a poor plot on a different show and was reminded that it was inappropriate to do so. I agreed and apologized.
Jessica shouldn't hammer someone for their thoughts (especially when it appears that the original commenter is more familiar with a hospital environment than most of us). Let's be a little more civil and not call individuals "a joke," shall we?
And to all of the people who respond to critiques of an episode by saying "Well, don't watch it then...": it is our right to watch and say what we want **about the show**. If we have to endure ridiculous writing or production decisions for our favorite shows, then we have every right to grumble about them.
And you will listen to us. Enjoy!

This season of GA is very disappointing. Everytime I see Denny on the screen I scream "GO AWAY". he is like a fly that just wont leave. And I think that Izzie should have been written out a long time ago. The interns are reckless to have taken a perfectly healthy person into surgery for their selfish gain, and they should be fired (at least whoever started the dumb idea). Isnt "do no harm" one of the first parts of the hippocratic oath???

I don't necessarily think this was a terrible episode but I have to admit I'm tired of Denny. Loved the storyline back when it first aired, back when I really liked the character of Izzie before Shonda Rhimes ruined her with the Gizzie relationship and Katherine Heigl opened her mouth one too many times.
I guess my one gripe about this episode is the way the Chief reacted. In his place, I would put both Yang and Grey in their place for being such terrible teachers that the interns felt the need to practice on themselves. After the way he laid into Hahn for not teaching Yang it just seemed out of place for his character.
Maybe I have two gripes and the second one would be how Meredeth treats Lexie. I don't understand why Rhimes & Co. refuse to allow this character to mature. Who in their right mind, when around their sibling (even a half-sibling) day after day, would move heaven and earth to ignore that sibling and treat her as if she doesn't even exist. Maybe Derek's role will be to bring them together, but the way the character is currently written is beyond stupid.

Why is Izzie still on the show?
Someone seriously answer me. I have no idea, her character has had no direction for years.
And now Sadie is as annoying as she was on Alias. It's that smirk.
It's the drama around the learning that acually excites me, dorkily. The appendectomy, Christina struggling with it, the residents making the interns present, I want to see more of that. More surgeries with the surgeons struggling and being instructed and learning about themselves, their capabilities, what they want to do with their lives, that's the best.
