Fans might remember the original TV show Cupid, which starred Jeremy Piven long before Entourage made him a household name and he won a bunch of Emmy awards. It was about a seemingly ordinary guy who might just have been the magical guy who gets lovers together (or maybe he was just crazy). There's a new version coming to ABC from Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas, and the trailer for the show is after the jump. This one stars Bobby Cannavale, and it seems to be...quirkier than the original? Not that the original wasn't quirky, but there was something very down to earth about it. This one seems like it might be forcing that quirkiness. I'm not sure if it's going to be a comedy, a drama, or the dreaded dramedy, so I'll throw it in both categories. It has a good cast though.
Studio 60 fans will recognize Sarah Paulson. I'm sure her character will be just as beloved in this show as she was in that one.

I loved Rob Thomas' original Cupid. I'll watch this. I think Cannavale was a good choice, but I see what you mean about the forced quirkiness.

In the history of television, has there ever been a remake of a scripted program, whose intial series lasted only one year and less than 22 episodes?....

BSG - 1 season, 21 episodes.
(I'd say the remake is pretty successful...)
p.s. Paulson was the downfall to Studio 60, yes. But maybe that was the writing and not her. I'll give it a shot.

I agree with Stefan. I have a feeling this won't last long. Plus, I watched the initial Cupid, and although I like Cannavale, I still have Piven in my mind as the titular character -

I still think this is a dumb idea. Why redo a show you already cancelled, ABC?? I wrote about this on my blog here: http://raked.wordpress.com/2008/11/07/abc-i-want-a-do-over/
Now, I really loved Studio 60, and I'm glad an alum is getting another show, but she wasn't my favorite in Studio 60, and I just think the original had a much better cast... I don't know, I just think redoing this show is a weird, strange, dumb move. Especially with Valentine on the air right now! (Though who knows how long that will last...)
I liked the original, though. Why can't we just let that one live? I mean, we could butcher it and that's all anyone will remember...

Seeing this preview just made me miss the original, and wish that it was out on dvd!

Yeah, it does feel kind of "just like the other one, only with different names and actors." BC looks like JP, SP looks like a thinner blonde version of Claire...
Eh, I dunno. I might watch it.

And Joe Lo Truglio!
Next thing you know, they're going to remake "Miss Match."

...from the creator of Veronica Mars? You mean the man who created the sensation watched by 3 million people? Wooooow, that's enticing!
Seriously, this looks awful and the announcer sounds like he's mocking the show.

Bobby Cannavale = reason not to watch. How this guy finds work is beyond me. He reminds me of that nebbish twit in Good Morning Miami - Mark Feuerstein. Who is Bobby blowing to continue to get work?

I will watch this for the sole reason that it's being done by Rob Thomas (love the VM mention in the trailer!). Plus, I like Bobby Cannavale. He seems like a good choice for this role, which is more than I can say for Sarah Paulson.

No thanks.

Rob's a good author, too. I read one of his books in high school. It had his e-mail address in it so I dropped him a line, and he replied back. Cupid had already been on at that time, and I told him that I really enjoyed the show.
I don't know what to think about this, though.
