Something amazing has happened recently in the TV media: the critics have discovered CBS's stealth ratings champ, NCIS, and it's now cool to come out of the closet and declare your fandom. Articles in USA Today, the Los Angeles Times and The New York Times have reported the fact that not only is NCIS consistently in the top five of the weekly Nielsen ratings, but it's also a smart, well-acted and compelling TV show. There are reasons to admire NCIS, and if you haven't been watching, here's five really good reasons to check out the show. I know that before I got coerced into giving NCIS a try, I didn't think I'd like it, but boy, was I wrong.
1) It's not really a procedural
Okay, yes, they do examine crime scenes and Donald "Ducky" Mallard (David McCallum) carves up cadavers while Abby analyzes fibers and prints, but NCIS is usually more about the people involved in the crime than how it was committed. You don't get a lot of tricky visual effects like the CSIs -- you know, the bullet shredding through a heart -- and you don't watch the investigators building a case like Law & Order (no "Where's your warrant?" or "Can I get a judge to sign off on this?"). NCIS doesn't feel clinical or technical; it's more meat-and-potatoes drama.
2) It's not really a military show
The 'N" in NCIS stands for Naval. I thought the show would be all about the Navy and cases involving ships and sailors. Well, that's true to a point. The jurisdiction for Jethro's teams is crimes committed against or involving military personnel, but they're not in uniform. They look like an urban investigation squad in a high-tech office. They deal with national security issues, but recently they investigated a murder involving a U.S. senator. The last two seasons included a big story about an international arms dealer nicknamed The Frog. NCIS covers a lot of territory that goes outside the lines of military bases and posts.
3) It's pop topical
For a show that supposed to be very straight in its stories and dialogue, the show is filled with topical and pop culture references. Tony is a major movie buff, forever bringing up lines from movies or situations that remind him of a Sean Connery movie or an episode of Magnum, P.I. (the Magnum bit was also a nod to Donald Bellisario, the creator of both NCIS and Magnum, P.I.); Ducky's vast knowledge of science and history; Abby's tattoos and rock 'n roll, motorcycle chick dogma; Tim's success as a mystery novelist named Thom E. Gemcity, even the current director's fascination with boxing and Mohammad Ali.
4) It's all about the team
The big name on NCIS is Mark Harmon, but the star of the show is the ensemble. It's the team that makes the show click, their chemistry and the way the characters interact. Everyone has something idiosyncratic that makes them unique, but together they work like a really tight band. It's a nod to Harmon as the star that he gives Michael Weatherly, David McCallum, Sean Murray, Cote de Pablo, Pauley Perrette all a lot more than just reflected glory. The current crew is so good together, only long time, die-hards still miss Kate.
5) It's filled with funny bits
There's all kinds of bits of business that makes NCIS fun to watch. Gibbs smacking Tony on the head when he makes a dumb comment (a schtick that Michael Weatherly and Mark Harmon improvised in the first season), Gibbs buying Big Gulps for Abby, Ziva's malaprops, Abby's Goth image contradict her scientific mind and sweet nature, Tony called Tim "Probie" ( and mocking his geekdom, Gibbs multiple marriages -- all redheads -- and his building a wooden boat in his basement (with no conceivable way to get it out of the basement!).
So, if you haven't tried NCIS yet, I hope this'll give you the impetus to give it a try. Let me know what you think if you do, and for you long-timers like me, share your thoughts about this underrated gem.

Yes, but Illya Kuryakin is a much better name than Ducky.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. connection has been mentioned on the show!
One of the greatest lines in the second season was when the now gone Kate asked Gibbs what Ducky looked like as a young man, and Mark Harmans pauses a second and just says "He looked like Illya Kuryakin"
Years later and that still makes me laugh.

My current favorite action/drama. Allison is absolutely right about the dynamic. The team atmosphere that permeates every episode is so much more of why I watch it that the subject of that particular episode. Any show where the characters snip at each other one minute and put it all on the line together the next is my favorite kind of TV. It's why I devoured shows like The West Wing and Star Trek: TOS. Call me old fashioned, but TV is at its best when its about 'The Team'.

You are being sarcastic, right? Please tell me you are being sarcastic. It is not even close. It's fine, and if you like it, that's great, but don't go saying crazy shit like "Best Show on TV".

Who are you to decide what he thinks is the best show on TV? I think half the shows you listed are garbage. That's my opinion. You lost any credibility you had when you named desperate housewives.
Coming back to the topic all i can say is thank god for some of the love being shown towards NCIS.Maybe this will ensure us a few more seasons.

It's not cool to like NCIS. You can like it, I'm not going to arrest you or mock you, but don't pretend like its cool. It's basically the drama version of Three and a Half Men or According to Jim. I'm sure its dramatic/funny at times, but you have to turn your brain off for most of the hour, compared with other shows like Shield, Sons of Anarchy, BSG, Life, even Desperate Housewives.

I refer to NCIS as "JAG". And when JAG was on, I referred to the main character as "Jag", as though that were his name. I do this to annoy my mother, who is the only one I know who is a fan of either program.
"Oh boy! How is Jag going to solve this one?" I'll say as Mark Harmon investigates a crime, watching her do a slow burn out of the corner of my eye. This is my revenge for her deliberately provoking me as a toddler by referring to Lee Majors as the "six-dollar man".

As an NCIS watcher....Here is crossing my fingers that the ratings success does NOT bring us an NCIS:Miama or NCIS:New York....

ehh, better not happen!
for one thing, there's not really big naval bases anywhere else right? (no clue, just guessing here..).
and since it's a naval show... yeah.
in any case, i love this show and tonight's episode, cloak, was absolutely fantastic.
oh. while i'm here (dusty, sorry to waste your time as the following isn't to you...)
to omegapart!cle, should you happen to read this (forgive me if i got your name wrong or offend you in any way, but you offended me.):
if you don't like this show, fine. but please don't waste your time bashing shows you don't like. it wasn't necessary as most who bother to read this article are ones who love the show. no one benefits.
as a complete die hard obssessed fan, i take personal offense. yes it's just a show, but something i love.
you watch the shows you like, and we'll watch the shows we like. everyone's happy.
again, not trying to offend anyone here, just stating what i think, as you were.

I think NCIS has gained in popularity due to the fact that it is aired several times on cable channel USA.
Not only does Gibbs buy Abbie Big Gulps, but he's usually drinking a big coffee. Could Abby be Jethro's AA sponsor?

this is one of my favorites for years. I just bought the first 5 seasons on DVD. At first I did miss Kate, but after 1 season of Ziva, I didn't miss Kate at all, in fact I think that their is better chemistry between Ziva and the team, then there was between Kate and the team.

I've enjoyed this show for years, its always had a sense of humor that crime shows like CSI didn't have, they were far to serious, NCIS has a lighter more entertaining side to it.
Actually the when Tony called Tim "Probie" that was when he first joined the team and was a Probational Officer, hence the nick name Probie

I have watched this show from the very first episode, and I still look forward to watching it. In six years, I haven't seen one episode that wasn't good. The chemistry is magic, and the cast have become like family to me. However, I can't help wondering why Jessica Alba didn't marry Michael Weatherly when he asked her to. I love him, and, like Mark Harmon, he never seems to age. Why is he never on any of those sexy lists that they have?

My favorite early joke:

Agent Gibbs: "Think Illya Kuryakin."

Discovered this show on USA and got hooked on it. I like it mainly because of the characters. By far, NCIS is the best CSI type show. Compare to the other shows, they handle the technical stuff more realistically. I am not saying it's realistic ...from from it, as with most tv shows.
