You would think that a TV network that just canceled two big shows and had to pretty much take over another big show wouldn't be too happy with the company's entertainment head. But that's not what's happening over at NBC.The network just canceled the Christian Slater spy drama My Own Worst Enemy, and Lipstick Jungle looks like it might be done too. Both shows starred big names and the network were hoping they'd stick around for a while. Meanwhile, Heroes has seen a huge drop in ratings, producers are being fired, and the show is being overhauled for its (hopeful) fourth season. But Silverman isn't being blamed for these miscues. Exec Katharine Pope was in charge of those shows (and Bionic Woman) so she is the one being blamed, according to The New York Post.
As for Silverman, he might even get a raise. Profits at the Peacock Network are actually up 50% from last season. Silverman doesn't seem care much about ratings. Which is good, because that strategy seems to be working out fine for the network. Not sure why I'd want to pitch my show to NBC if I was a producer, though.

Hey Bob, a question: in your recent post about best new shows, you were really taken to task by most of the commentators for not including Life on Mars on the list. Life on Mars was last night, and it's clear that readers of TvSquad like it. Why hasn't there been a Life on Mars post?

Cancelling My Own Worst Enemy was a mistake. It is an excellent show, and really offers something different from the rest of broadcast TV (not as different as some, like Life on Mars or Pushing Daisies, but it pushes the envelope in some ways), and it was really growing, in quality if not ratings.
The fact is, that most massively popular, popular culture redefining shows were not popular or even that good in their first season. It took the faith of the network running them to allow them to flourish and improve. With the mindset of most networks nowadays, I really don't think there will ever be another Friends or Seinfeld (at least not on broadcast TV).
