My favorite moment in last week's 30 Rock, in which Oprah Winfrey made a guest turn -- and a good one -- was when Liz accepted a piece of Rhode Island salt water taffy from O. This lead to Oprah rattling off some of her "wonderful favorite things" for this year -- paisley tops, sweater capes, Calypso music, Chinese checkers, high-heeled flip-flops. Well, you don't have to be Liz Lemon -- or wait for the annual Christmas show -- to check out Oprah's real faves. The Oprah Store is launching online this Friday. There's been a real store since last January located in Chicago across the street from the Harpo Studios, but this site, which will be an expansion of the mini-shop that's been online for a while, will capture the breadth and scope of the year-old brick and mortar store.
That means that in addition to "O" tee-shirts, coffee mugs and keychains, there will be trendy boutique items and things that Oprah's discovered and wants to share with viewers.
While there's no question that this is another example of the omnipresent Oprah brand, this one makes me smile. It's the perfect way to enjoy Oprah without being lucky enough to be in that audience when she starts revealing her favorite things. Think of it as the Disney Store but with a more specific point of view.
There's also one really interesting twist in this new venture. If you ever wanted to really walk in Oprah's shoes, you might get the chance. The Oprah Store includes a special section called Oprah's Closet, vintage apparel that Ms. Winfrey actually wore! You can buy her slightly used sweaters, dresses and such, with the proceeds going to Winfrey's Angel Network, which contributes to a number of projects.
So, just in time for Christmas, The Oprah Store will be online and the diva on sale. If it takes off, don't be surprised to see imitator. The Osmonds Store could be an inevitability.
