Smallville: Bloodline

Smallville(S08E08) Kara is back, fulfilling Laura Vandervoort's one-episode obligation for this season. She looked like she stepped right out of one of the Mad Max movies. The only question I had is how they would quickly dispose of the character after reintroducing her and I admit that they threw me on that one. I figured she'd die in the Phantom Zone, but it would somewhat diminish the spin-off possibilities if they did that. The current tactic of sending her on an indefinite mission so they could bring her back if they wanted works much better.

Did anybody else notice that they mentioned Guitar Hero in the dialogue at the episode's beginning and it cut to a KFC commercial with a promotion involving...wait for it...Guitar Hero? This is product placement that is almost as good as the Stride Gum infomercial episode from last year.

Once again, Clark narrowly escapes having his secret blown to Lois, who only appears to be a crackerjack reporter but instead is quite possibly the most ignorant reporter on the planet. The whole "I was possessed by aliens" convenient hallucination only works for so much, and I think they used that one up with Luthor a few seasons ago.

The Lois/Clark relationship is still going, what with Fayora's (Faora? I can never get my Kryptonian spelling straight) comment to Clark about his feelings for her. Did anybody else notice that the minute Lois was possessed, she adopted a different hairstyle and wore more make-up? Strange. That didn't happen to Lex.

Once again, I must note that it seems like all Kryptonians flee to Earth, like there are no other planets in the cosmos. Earth is the Kryptonian equivalent of Florida, where all their race goes to retire.

It's amazing how the show can tell us virtually everything about Doomsday, including his secret origin as the spiritual offspring of General Zod and some woman named Fayora, yet still not reveal to us what he looks like when he goes all Hulk-like. They have to save that computer animation for a very special episode. Since Clark is supposed to be a messianic figure, does this make Davis Bloome the anti-Christ?

Also, and this is a minor quibble, if they're going to have obscure references to Back to the Future and The Empire Strikes Back (I'm truly revealing my uber-nerd persona now by recognizing the name "Lobot" used in Chloe's comment), would it have killed them to make a reference to Superman II by having Zod's wife named Ursa?

It does seem like they're leading even more to the concept that Chloe has Brainiac stuck in her head. I wonder if the writers will be tying that into the whole "Zod offspring" storyline. Probably.

I have two final observations from this episode. First, a lot of people were bleeding. We had Clark, Kara, Chloe and Mr. Bloome all leaking the red at some point as a recurring motif. Second, almost all the regulars (except Jimmy) appeared in this one. This makes sense, since a lot of important stuff happened, but it already feels like the Doomsday storyline is dragging on too long. I have been pleasantly surprised by the change it tone that followed the departure of Lana and Lex, but unless there is a significant reveal I'm not seeing, I predict a major disappointment by season's end.

Should the CW spin-off Kara into her own show?
