When the news came that ex-ER star Anthony Edwards was going to return to the show for an episode this last season, fans wondered how that could happen, since he died (and we mean really died, not soap opera died) of a brain tumor around 6 years ago. Would he be a ghost? A hallucination only a patient can see? Would he be Mark's long-lost twin brother (Matt, or maybe Monty) who comes to work at County because his brother worked there? The news that Dr. Mark Greene is going to interact somehow with new doctor Cate Banfield (Angela Bassett) just makes the scenario more confusing. But now we have our answer. Edwards tells the AP that Mark will be shown via flashback in an ER story we haven't seen before.
How will Cate be in those flashbacks? Seems she came to County with her sick daughter while Mark was there. The flashback will be triggered when another young girl comes to the er after falling in a lake and Cate takes care of her.
This sounds like an OK way to do it, actually. And even better news? Laura Innes and Paul McCrane will appear in the flashbacks as Weaver and Romano, pre-resignation for Weaver and pre-helicopter-crushing for Romano.

When is this episode airing? The combination of Weaver, Romano, and Greene might actually get me to watch an episode of ER again. (I religiously watched the show's reruns a couple years ago and generally really like the first 8 seasons). If they could just get Carter to come back, it would be nearly perfect.

I gave up on ER due to repetitive storylines about 2 years ago but I'll watch this episode.
The episode, titled "Heal Thyself" will air on November 13. Here is the official description:
"HEAL THYSELF"
11/13/2008 (10:00PM - 10:59PM) (Thursday) : PHYSICIAN HEAL THYSELF-ANTHONY EDWARDS ("Top Gun," "Thunderbirds") COURTNEY B. VANCE ("Law and Order, Criminal Intent") GUEST STARS - Dr. Banfield (Angela Bassett) takes a run to clear her head but finds herself trying to rescue a three-year-old girl from drowning in a nearby lake. Gates (John Stamos) tries to pull some strings in the ER to help his homeless war hero. Banfield is reminded of her own experience at County with Dr. Greene (guest star Anthony Edwards) caring for her son as she tries to save the young three-year-old girl from certain death. Meanwhile, the interns continue to struggle to keep up in the ER. Parminder Nagra, Linda Cardellini and Scott Grimes also star.

As Steve Young said in comments, Carter will be back this season.

You know if I want to watch an episode with these characters I simply pop in the Season 1 DVDs which actually feature some good stories.
I don't think there's anything left to tell. Mark Greene died and I cried like a baby watching that episode. Bringing him back is like raping his corpse.

I wish Carter could come back for this episode, what I wouldn't give for some more Greene/Carter moments!
