(S05E06) "I am so gay." - Hahn
As much as I've been annoyed with how the Hahn/Callie courtship has gone thus far, I have to say - I think they won me over here. To see Hahn cry and blubber about how she's finally discovered herself, I couldn't help but feel bad for her. Granted she flipped the bitch-switch back on at the hospital, but you can't really blame her for that. She's gay. Callie's bi. And Major Owen Hunt likes to stab live pigs.
Well it wasn't quite that harsh... OK, maybe it was - the man jabbed a knife into four sedated oinkers. Hunt is back in Seattle (apparently he returned to Iraq for one more tour and saw most of his squad die) and he didn't really make too many friends on his first day at SGH. He forgot Yang's name (his reason for doing so was respectable - living in "the after"), violated Izzie's love of animals (did we know she was a card carrying PETA member?), and from what I can tell, made Sloan and Shepherd quite jealous with all his field-tested trauma moves.
Are his skills brash? Yes. Does he think quickly? Yes. Does he really seem to give a crap if his methods scar a guy, but keep him alive? Nope. While I think Hunt is exactly the type of character this show needs, my only worry is that his attitude backfires and Webber will regret hiring him since Hunt doesn't really seem to have any desire to make nice with his co-workers. And we know how much Webber wants his doctors to "talk" now. From what I can tell, Hunt has a pretty big ego. He's there to save lives. Period. Time will tell if he has other interests. Or social skills.
OK, moving on. Meredith and Derek went digging again through all of Ellis' boxes. What do we make of the giant crate o' diaries? I'm going to assume that we're about to find out that the late Ellis Grey was way more screwed up than anyone ever realized. Also, I'm praying that there's something in one of those diaries about Webber. He earned a few points in this episode by apologizing to Meredith for destroying her family, but I'm still hoping for another dark secret to come out.
A few more thoughts...
- Callie thinks she's bi right now... but is she? My gut says she's still man-hungry and Hahn is just going to turn into her "one time in college" story.
- Is Izzie an idiot? It took her all episode to figure out that Alex wanted an exclusive relationship? This woman is a doctor?
- Anatomy Jane - creepy. That being said, I prefer my foreshadowing to not be so obvious... I mean, c'mon. The second Meredith started pulling the organs out of that doll, you immediately knew what the major surgery du jour was going to be about.
- Yang named her new intern 4.2 and I love it. He's not good enough to get a whole number.
- I hope Bailey continues to take Webber up on his challenge to "be him."
I'm liking where this is headed. As I said, I feel like Hunt really adds a dynamic of urgency that had been lacking. It gives Yang something (someone?) else to do besides complain, and maybe, just maybe, he might make Grey's Anatomy a fraction of what it used to be when Burke and Addison were around.

don't like the gay line but never will just fast forward thru them! I am just now trying to like Izzie! She ruined Callies & Georges life. Maybe George is finally getting it together but not Callie she is really messed up! Bi????
What I don't like I can always FF thru it! I wish they would find someone for Yang she deserves to be happy again!

Ego was all I thought about when McDreamy and McSteamy were in the ER, asking what they could do. But not Hunt's ego, their egos.
Hunt's ego obviously isn't what we were supposed to believe from that first seen with the Sloane and Shepard, as he clearly showed interest in changing his methods away from 'meatball surgery'.

Hahn's glasses speech was the worst 5 minutes I've ever seen on television. It made me wish that I too saw blobs and, in addition, had no hearing

*laughs* It did seem a bit drawn out... ...but it was the exact same thing that happened to me (and I'm betting lots of kids) when I got glasses.
I mean, I knew leaves existed. I didn't know you were supposed to be able to SEE them.

I really liked Hahn's "glasses" speech. But if anyone on that should can appreciate over-the-top confessions of undying love it's Callie. She almost clawed Izzie and Meredith's eyes out in Season 2 because she was SOOOOOOO into George.
I'm on the fence about the new doctor, "Major Hunk" (I am going on record as saying this will be his nickname.)It'll take him some time to for him to warm up, but from what I saw last night, Alex seems to have found a new role model.

Perhaps you should know that doctors aren't necessarily the biggest and brightest when it comes to pursuits outside of medicine and science? Other interests are usually shucked aside to practice, so it's no surprise that Izzy can't read Alex. Both are idiots when it comes to each other.
Hunt is what this show needs, though I think you miss his character traits considering when confronted by Sheperd and Sloan, he asks what he can do to improve which leads Alex to do the same w/ Izzy. Hunt doesn't have an ego, he is just used to living his life and practicing his art on one setting that is near the opposite of Seattle Grace.
If you hate this show, why watch it? To come to a TV webzine and bitch about it? Wow, you're living the high life. No wonder you were once voted most likely to die alone.

Justin - you got it - in the end Sloan and Shepard were taken aback by his seemingly lack of ego - he's doing what he know how but isn't above learning a better medical technique - TV squad writers are missing the point all over today and I never complain about the reviews but that was a huge point in the show. The talk to each other thing.

Re Hunt: Did you not see the end of the episode? Where Derek and Soan were all ego, hey we're the experts how dare you come into my hospital confrontation, they were surprised when Hunt was the one to say "how can I do better" that he wants to be a better doctor, learn to treat people better in a different environment. He said that. He was the one embodying surgeons working together, and talking, that had confronted Webber. He has his tough teaching methods, but he is the first attending who actually wants to teach and learn. He's changed.
Re Izzie and Callie, wow you're judgemental. I thought Izzie was actually pretty tough in this episode and I was confused about Karev. You seriously take Karev's side when he's not being direct? And Callie, "man-hungry"? WTF? So a woman who is as freaked out as men are all the time, as Karev was and you understood HIM, just doesn't actually want what she's getting into? And as you said about Izzie, you're reviewing TV? Karev and Callie are both freaked out and trying to do something new, learning a new language. It's not about how much they want to be with the other person.

Hunt's back story is ridiculous. Everyone in Iraq died but him. 19 guys? GTFOH. And he got his discharge that fast?? Argh. Maybe being in the army, being over there and having to wait months and months for a discharge ruined that back story for me.
And who walks around the city in his ACUs while on leave? Maybe I should move to Hollywood and be a consultant for the "military" stories.
