Here's some news that I'm ready to sing about! One of my favorite TV actresses is heading to Broadway. Gilmore Girls' Lauren Graham will star in the revival of Guys and Dolls that opens in New York next March. She's not only going to be making her Broadway debut, she'll be doing it in one of the greatest musicals of all time. And she'll be playing not the ingenue role (Salvation Army missionary doll Miss Sarah Brown). No, she's smartly taking the very funny, very distinctive comic role as Miss Adelaide, lead singer/tootsie at the Hot Box nightclub! For fans like me who always lamented the fact that Lauren never got the Emmy recognition she most definitely deserved for Gilmore Girls, the prospect of her doing Guys and Dolls could also mean she's got a shot at a Tony award.
I don't think Lauren's thinking like that; most actors don't. However, the Miss Adelaide role is showy and flamboyant and the last two women who've played it on stage on Broadway and in London, won top prizes -- Faith Prince on Broadway in 1994 and Jane Krakowski (30 Rock) in England in 2006. So why not Lauren?
She'll be playing opposite Oliver Platt as Nathan Detroit. True, he's no Luke Danes, but you can't have everything, right? One thing about casting Lauren: it will more certainly translate into box office. Broadway has cashed in on TV stars returning to the boards, and Lauren Graham's name on the marquee will be a major draw. Guys and Dolls begins previews on February 3, 2009 at the Nederlander Theater.
Oh, if you're worried about whether or not Lauren can sing, check out this Gilmore Girls memory:
