(S05E05) "Interns - the other white meat." - Alex
I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a kidney today! The rare opportunity of being able to perform a domino procedure has finally come to Seattle Grace (thanks to Bailey's efforts), and with the bad shape that SGH has been in lately, it couldn't have come at a better time. They need some good headlines.
But as with all in-depth Grey's Anatomy plots, there is no way you're going to get 12 kidney donors/recipients together without there being some drama. Hey, people with severe renal failure still have daddy issues and engage in extramarital sex too you know.
One guy had an affair with the woman who was giving him a kidney and that meant his wife wasn't going to give a kidney to a complete stranger and that's a problem. One person drops out, and well... that's why they call it a domino procedure. However, I was far more interested in the plot thread involving Carl Lumbly, whom I shall only refer to as Dixon (I miss Alias), and his estranged relationship with his son.
I say that because the second we found out that they had issues and Dixon was paying off his kid to give up his kidney, I thought, "Perfect! This means we'll get some character development out of Alex since no one on this show can have any real emotional growth until they've treated a patient with the same (or similar) issues!" And that's exactly what happened. Alex and Izzie finally seem to be back on track after they kissed at the end. The guy has a heart after all and he can get just as emotionally involved with a case as Izzie does... if the right buttons are pushed.
On the flip side of relationships at SGH, I still CANNOT STAND what is going on with Callie and Hahn. It is a train wreck to watch. Call me shallow, and maybe I'm like Sloan and I just want all my pseudo-lesbian sub-plots to be hot, erotic, and enjoyable... but this is beyond awkward. Callie going to Sloan for oral sex tips was the icing on the cake. Please make this stop.
The one other thing going on that I actually found myself caring about was Derek being published in that medical journal. If I'm Meredith, I'm not just angry - I'm pissed! I wouldn't care if Derek was an attending and I'm only a second year resident or not. She came up with the idea, she presented it to him, and she had a hand in every part of those clinical trials. I would absolutely demand that it be changed to the Shepherd-Grey Method. All she got was a glow-in-the-dark kidney? What a pushover!
More thoughts on "There's No 'I' In Team" --
- Five second rule?!? What? OK, yeah, I realize that the floor of an OR isn't exactly a McDonald's parking lot, but still - the kidney got dropped! Do they disclose that to the recipient?
- Did Yang make intern trading cards?
- "Lexipedia." Funny.
- Back to Meredith being a pushover; Derek called her a baby! How is she not angry still?
- Remember Steve The Intern? Apparently, he doesn't bathe.
- It's going to be interesting to see how George deals with his former fellow interns who aren't taking him seriously as a resident.
- Remember - diseased kidneys are not tchotchkes for your coffee table.
One final thought - can anyone else possibly hook up on this show? Mer and Der. George and Lexie. Alex and Izzie. Yang and Hunt (the major is back!) and Callie and Hahn. Who's left at this point? Why aren't there more episodes like that one from season one or two where the whole hospital had chlamydia?

I just want the writers know how discusting last night's show was and how immoral. There is no place in a hospital for people private sex lives. It is making me sick what you are doing with the two female doctors. I used to like this show but myself and a few of my co-workers have decided we have had enough. I think it's about time you clean up your show.

I guess you just don't like the fact that they have gay and bi and lesbian characters on the show because let's face it, the show's ALWAYS been about the doctors and their sex lives. Always. So clearly you only have a problem with the gay storyline which I think is really sad. But hey, no one is forcing you to watch it.
I for one am I really enjoying the Hahn/Callie storyline and I think it's fantastic. They're treating their relationship just like they are treating the Derek/Meredith relationship and Izzie/George, Burke/Christine relationship. They have sex, they talk about it. Get over it.

Okay, Donna, stop being ignorant. There are other people out there who are enjoying and identifying with a lesbian couple on TV. TGet over yourself. Grey's has ALWAYS had people's private sex lives on display. That's what this show has always been about, duh. If you don't recall, Meridith slept with McDreamy in the first episode after getting drunk in a bar and taking a random stranger home with her. Did you find it immoral then? So now that they finally have two female doctors together during the fifth season, it's finally a big issue to you and is considered immoral? It's people like YOU who disgust me.
I thought this episode was fabulous. It's great to see Grey's finally coming around and kind of returning to how it used to be.

Oh, Donna, but it's okay for straight people to be bagning each other all over that hospital, like in the first couple of seasons? You and you friends need to get over yourselves. If you wanted a cleaner show, you shouldn't be watching GA.

Well, I could do with a little less sex on the show in general, but I was so happy with the episode in general who cares!!!!!!
Last night truly felt like old GA! before all the train wrecks. I think it had something to do with Bailey being her old self and starting that domino effect. When Bailey is Bailey all is right with the world.
I miss the old Callie though, you know the quirky one that was bohemain, lived in the hospital basement.

My theory on this is that, following an ABC internal memo that touted girl/girl kissing as one of the best ways to keep your show "hot" and your ratings high, Shonda Rhimes made a bet with the rest of her staff that she could create a lesbian relationship that would lower ratings, lower the show's already minimal credibility and make the actors involved even less likable than Katherine Heigl. I wonder what she won.

Aaack...how did these comments happen? First, I love Katherine Heigel. She is a real person, and just because she says what she is thinking, it's a bad thing. Not. She's strong; get over it. And her husband is amazingly real and funny.
I love the idea of the Callie/Hahn storyline, because I find allie to be an incredibly sexy woman. However, I'm having Hahn issues. Something about the way the part is played - with her eyes always (literally) wide open is not working for me. She's just a little too doe eyed for what I expect from this storyline.
Shepherd's arrogance last night annoyed me, but I'm guessing its probably exactly how it is in medicine, so I'll shut up about it.
If anyone should be doing voiceovers on Grey's, it should be Bailey. She went from being a beyotch on two wheels at the beginning of the show to the one with all the heart and soul. She rocks.
The domino thing was just a bit much for me...if that's how people really choose whether or not to give an organ, shame on them all.
Finally - why didn't George open his mouth to say that there WAS not say in what interns he got. Instead he let Lexie tear into him like a child. She's still the most annoying character to me.

I am shocked at how Derek gave absolutely no credit to Meredith. This is especially shocking considering this is a teaching school...Meredith should be given a LOT of credit for coming up with the idea and helping Derek out at every moment.
In the academic world, even if an undergraduate helps out with a paper/project/whatever with a senior member of the faculty, it is important that s/he is given appropriate credit. Is Derek really that vain?

I actually really like how they are dealing with Hahn and Torres in this series. This is something that is both new to them. I was shocked they just jumped into bed this week after their discussion last week, but this is something both women are working their way through. It isn't easy for both of them. The entrance of another bisexual female in the weeks ahead will make things interesting as well.

I love seeing this program and look really forward to it every week. The last two weeks I can say I don't like the Hahn/Callie relationship. I think you went to far on it this week. Talking about how they turn each other on sexually[dropping their pants}. I hope the next show with them is more private or not at all.

I agree that they should not have had George let Lexie tear into him without an explanation.

Derek treated Mere like shit. I never would have put up with that and she just takes her glow in the dark kidney at the end like that is supposed to make it better?

this show is absolute garbage now, characters are shallow, writing is incredibly weak, plots are idiotic.
and the love quadrangles are just getting very very lame.
you know that george, the hospital sap, has slept with every resident except christina and lexie, and i'm sure he'll be in bed with lexie soon enough.

Just pay them all what they want because it IS the best show on television. I have watched from day one and if had the extra funds I'd buy all the past seasons and watch them over and over. YOU ALL ARE AWESOME and I hope this gets in the hands of the right people who deserve to hear the compliment.

I sure am glad it was a Dr who dropped the kidney cause if it was a nurse the public would've been all over it!! Dr's are still Gods and cannot do wrong. I was appalled that they would have this as part of the story line. I am a floor nurse not a surgical nurse so I don't know if this kind of stuff really happens while we're asleep on that table but I don't think they should be putting these kinds of thoughts in people's heads. It's hard enough to submit yourself to surgery.
